Friday means FREAKANGELS.

Good morning, Whitechapel. How's everyone? After a weird and UNPLEASANT heat spike this week in NorCal, it's back to chilly dark here. Yes, it really was hot. If I wanted Arizona weather, I'd live in Arizona. (Also, it managed to momentarily flash fry my tech which is really the measure of how much trouble _any_ weather is in. Don't fuck with my tech.) But I prevailed. Everyone else make it through their own weeks?

Nice! I wondered why Caz had connected up her solar cells to all that gear. That's why she's a genius and I'm not.
But... What's happening with stomach-sliced-open man? Enough with the suspense!

We've had a warm and sunny week in London, 7 degrees above average I believe.

Joe is 6 months old next week so I have booked the day off. If the weather is nice we will take him to the zoo. If he behaves we will bring him home again.

Now I have had my Friday FreakAngels fix I can go on my comic pick-up run.

I has TEH STABBY real bad today, have failed to buy a house yet again, the car's about to die in an expensive way, work's doing my head in and I'm tired beyond belief. If I don't kill anyone today, I might survive to the weekend.

That was quite a scary episode in one way - the lamp comment was chilling - would we collectively be so crap after a fall of civilisation? Really? We'd not get it together to put lights up, and just be reduced to a feral existence eating dead rabbits? I don't want to believe that, I don't believe that, but what if it's true?

			 Radio Free Freakangels.

If I hadn't had flashbacks to chemistry & physics classes where we had questions framed in the format "Civilization has collapsed. You have x,y & z; make n and estimate yield over time/amount"...this did it. Caz couldn't have had an easy job acquiring appropriate equipment for the fuel cells (via Jack) to make it really efficient.

Our local power company had some blurb on public radio yesterday morning that they now have an operation solar array, and it's actually working better then estimated. Wonderful synchronicity.

Starting to move back to the normal hot & humid southern weather. Work has been to busy to go outside & enjoy the nice weather. Still haven't had to turn the AC on at home; I was one of the remaining holdouts still clutching his CRT/boat anchor & switching to an LCD has made it where I don't have to have a small fan blowing on me full time.

Been reading Frank Herbert's The White Plague. Wonderful starting point & reminds me way too much of the good Doktor as well as what might have happened years ago to the 'angels.

			 Well Fuck me backwards!

This week was HOLY MOTHER OF BISCUITS STRESS STRESS ARGH, but surprisingly productive anyhow. The designer went overseas to be present for his girlfriend ushering in another screaming lifeform made in his image. She gave birth to it on Wednesday morning. Coincidentally that afternoon the designer's computer decided that, of its 160Gb hard disk space, only about 2Mb was left and I had a 4.5Gb print file that had to be printed urgently.

This is why I for one would quite welcome the freakangels wiping all computer technology from the face of the planet. The rest of civilization collapsing with it would be acceptable collateral damage.

My first guess was solar-assisted steam power when I saw the great big containers. Which makes me wonder, when they start making more of these fuel cells, would KK's bike get an upgrade? Would KK let it get upgraded?

I do wonder if alternating storylines every six pages is easier or harder for Warren and Paul. Its interesting to see how the webcomic formula influences the storytelling process - in fact, I'm curious if the format affects the story itself. How would Freakangels be different if it began and ended as a print comic?

Still ticking along, and glad to hear the rest of you are, as well.

Lesse: I've been pulling at least one all-nighter a week to keep up with my Visual Storytelling class, and while my body regrets it every morning after, it's still heaven, just drawing and telling stories the best way I know how, surrounded by people I love doing the same thing. This last one more so than usual. Of course, it might be affecting my immune system, as I've just come down with a back-of-the-throat cold. Drinking tea and cayenne pepper to kill it.

Also worked out what I'm doing after school - namely moving to Philadelphia with two lovely girls whom I know I can spend 48-hour periods in a small, cramped room with, because we've been doing it for the past year. The future, for once, looks like bright cyan hope.

Yummy science is teh yay. }:> I get the concept but even in high school didn't work much with electricity. And they don't make theatre majors take any real science. So it may as well be a magic hamster for all I know making my lights turn on. All the same, I *heart* geeks. I *heart* 'em good, so this was fun to read. Kept a dopey grin on my face the whole way through.

Interesting to me: I understand the 'Angels have different strengths and, for wont of a better phrase, job descriptions. So I wonder what the traitor's job was (and I wish I could remember his name but I'm to lazy to go check). I was just thinking about what if something unthinkable happened to one of the 'Angels. There would be a huge gap in their resources, in addition to the tragedy. What did the traitor do, and therefore what gap was left by his expulsion? How are they getting around it? I haven't noticed too much of a gap, myself, but I'm neither a genius nor trying to get by in a post-Apocalyptic London.

They may have gravitated to their roles and saw where all their knowledge/resources led each, but they seem to be suspiciously well suited to each task. I mean, Kaz is a brilliant engineer and no one else comes even close. KK has some overlapping skills but her talents in mechanics are independent and no one touches them. They didn't assign them by a show of hands, it was what each 'Angel already had an outstanding aptitude for. And it seems like that whatever gave them the package selected the individual 'Angel for a specific task/discipline. How or why remains to be seen. But Mark would have had his well before the deluge (if I'm correct).

The best thing to be said about the week was "I lived through it."

And Freakangels. Lotsa tech stuff. It's great and all but I'm more interested in chickens and murder. (Two great tastes that taste great together!) And I don't like Caz. I don't HATE her but she's not my favorite. More chickens and murder!

What DOES Luke do? What's he good for? As Warren helpfully pointed out and as my learned roommate would say, he's the "escape-goat." (Seriously- I've had to correct him on this several times. But I always chuckle at the image "escape-goat" creates. Oh well. He's a good guy but too much book-learnin' ain't his sin.)

What did Mark do? I'm voting soldier. (And I realize this is not a democracy and I don't get a vote. BLAM!) And Luke was his buddy. And now that the Freakangels are creating, not destroying, soldiers are surplus to requirements. Why do they need GREAT FUCKING GATLING GUNS and pistols if they have "the Package", whatever THAT is? Couldn't Arkady teleport out and fuck up any intruders? Do their powers have a range limit? If so, how did they destroy the world? (Combination of minds being more powerful has been mentioned.)

Paul, amazing work again. And it's Warren Ellis, man. How can it be not good? Also, Ariana, Queen of All Correct-Thinking Humans. And let's hear it for Big Bill Christensen, Raygun Proprietor and Publishing-Type Guy! Kudos, I say. Kudos! Not Brickbats!

I'm guessing Mark had some sort of leadership or tactics role. In Arkady's flashback when they were hiding and she brought up them doing the equivalent of knocking the world down so it couldn't get up, Arkady says "I wish KK and Mark would get here" though they're not the only FAs not in the room at the time. Miki noted when they were bringing the refugees in that other FAs look to KK for leadership in some ways. Their roles definitely have been more defined since they got to Whitechapel. Kait said something about them all deciding what jobs they would do when they got there, in the bit where we first see her. But most if not all of them went with defined roles that had something to do with their personalities and what they'd been doing before. Little Kait in her own flashback always was a detective/cop type. There have been comments about Caz tinkering with things well before the world ended. When Connor was describing the rest of the FAs to Alice, he described Luke as being intellectual and spending too much time up in his own head. It doesn't sound like he was exploring the package the way Arkady does, but it does sound like some overlap between their talents/jobs/roles. With Mark, we know less because he's been gone a while, but given what we have heard, and the way he set up Alice as a trap, he does have some planning/tactics type of skills.

Of course, this speculation is subject to change with future information.

If KK and Caz can design and build things like the steam cannons, a decent reverse-osmosis distilling plant is well within their capabilities. If Freakangels is based on The Midwich Cuckoos then one must consider that the central premise of the novel is under what circumstance would it not only be possible, but necessary, even heroic, it murder a group of 58 children? I agree with the literary historian Adam Roberts when he argues that the Midwich Cuckoos calls out to be read as an early example of holocaust fiction. The camps were that place in the war where a people had systemised the murder of children (along with women and men) on the grounds of defending civilisation and the human race against a menace from within. In one sense the novel is an attempt to enter imaginatively (via SF fable) into the mindset of a people who could commit such an act.

Within the world of the novel, the Russians have destroyed one population of such children in one of their own towns by invoking the extreme step of obliterating the entire town by 'atomic cannon'. The Russian government, Wescott reports, 'calls upon all governments everywhere to ''neutralize'' any such known groups with the least possible delay'. Another character, Leebody, insists that killing them is not murder, since 'they have the look of genus homo, but not the nature'. Zellaby sums up, just before his suicide bombing: 'it is our duty to our race and culture to liquidate the Children' or 'their culture... will extinguish ours.' These queasily evasive euphemisms ('liquidate' 'neutralize') are painfully familiar. Moreover, Wyndham's description of the children seem almost egregiously Semetic: they all share 'browned complexions', 'dark golden hair' and 'straight narrow noses', and they carry the sense of 'foreignness' about them.

The momentum of the novel exists, we might say, in order to barrel us along the line of reasoning and emotional force, until we reach the same place that the Nazis occupied: these children must be killed to protect our race. This is not in the least to suggest the the humane, considerate Wyndham was a Nazi; indeed, something the reverse. His novel is a brilliantly contrary ethical cipher: it interprellates us as a camp guard: 'here, you must not only kill these children' (or not kill, but liquidate, neutralise) 'but believe that you are still doing good'. Wyndham's satire on the western ideology of 'civilisation' and 'race' still has a contempory bite and resonance in these modern times. It's a catastrophe, but certainly not a cosy one.

Almost time for it to begin again:) My week has been great. I love KK, Carolyn is cool, I like her combination of genius and insecurity--did you notice in the first two panels how the hole in the wall shifted an unbelievable amount in relationship to the ladder? A different perspective couldn't explain that shift!;)? A plain evaporative still will make distilled water, (and booze). I like the way that Alice is the one that makes Kirk more human, teases him, ongoing thing about the ascenders. He tries to be a dick to keep people off, and with all the previous helpers on lookout it worked--he drove them away. I'm guessing Alice had big brothers so she doesn't take him a seriously:) We know the least about Mark, but don't we know his last name? Mark Fox. Do we know anyone else's last name? I like the hint from Carolyn about them not being the most popular before the flood, lets us know that they were together/or considered a group, and well known? Someday the back-story to the flood will come out, dammit! Technically, a volt meter won't tell you a fuel cell is putting out electricity, just that there's a potential for it. Put a load on it and see if there's still EMF! And tomorrow it continues:) YEA!!!!!!!

			 @ phorgan

We know KK's whole name: Kolfinnia Kokokoho Titching. We also know that KK will try to stab anyone attempting to use it to mock her. Or possibly even just saying it aloud.

			 Hi all,

FA Newbie here. Just finished reading all FA webcomics in two sittings within the last 12 hours.

When I finished ep 53 and notice 6 and saw the empty block that eventually will read "Episode 54" - I thought "Shit, NOOO! Not already?!"

I've read Ellis' costumed superheroes stuff and his Fell detective series from Image. Still, I was surprised how this webcomic hooked me, but deep.

Help me make it through to the next episode?

- another laid-off Noo Yawker
