It just made the news.

Ian Talty, 30, of Woodbury and a 29-year-old friend were photographing a tunnel on the St. Paul side of the Mississippi River south of the Marshall Avenue bridge when a thunderstorm erupted, filling the tunnel with rainwater and sweeping the men into the river, St. Paul police say.

Talty’s friend was able to make it to shore on his own, but Talty was not.

I'm sure some of you remember his enthusiasm for urban exploration, and his excellent photography.

I understand that friends and family are en route to the Twin Cities. Reading the report, those tunnels are just a few blocks away from me, he'd been itching to get in and photograph them since seeing them frozen up this winter(I believe this would be the drain, in fact), and I'd hoped to meet up with him when he was doing so. As I was sitting there last night after hearing about this, I realized a police car I saw that morning on my way to work was headed to the scene. He's not only a Whitechapel'er, but like a few others here, Ian's home is my home, too. His chronicles of it were always breathtaking, showing a side of this land, in its natural AND unnatural states in ways only his eye could see, but whose love and passion were so very evident.

It's a good thing my niece was outside when I read this, so I could fill the house up with "FUCK FUCK FUCK" as tears ran down my face.

Elissa was one such person, and we're friends still to this day. She was there with her boyfriend, hair pulled into a ponytail, hanging past the middle of his back. His name was Ian, and Elissa and he were first loves. I always knew him as Ian, with no last name. Yeah--turns out Elissa's Ian was our Ian.

The service was good, a mix of great stories about Ian that many didn't know, bent towards the amusing(and turning sad when realizing that he is no longer around to spread more joy) as he displayed a wickedly warped sense of humor. He made comics with his little sister when they were young, he married not one pair of friends but two(or more?), and he had an email thread going with some cohorts that was apparently filled with things worse than the "I Did Not Need To See That" threads(and along with that, that was the first, and probably last, time I've heard goatse brought up when someone was speaking to very mixed company at a funeral). It was a plain, honest service, with many off-kilter stories, and it seems to be just the sort of thing he would have wanted. I wasn't brave enough to share anything myself in front of everyone (though I was thinking hard on it), but I did print out this thread and bring it along for the family to have.

There was quite the turnout, lots of friends, family, and coworkers, but also fellow internet people like myself and some of the local taggers as well(they're real, tangible people, holy crap! it doesn't just appear like magic!). Whether they'd know of it forever, or had only come across it recently, everyone was unified in their awe at his talent with using a camera to bring out the beauty in anything. You couldn't turn around without seeing one of his pictures on display either, whether up on the projector or in one of the numerous frames scattered about the place. At one point, I also found myself looking at my own words from my blog cut out and on a posterboard surrounded by pictures of Ian, which was a strange moment.

Afterwards, zarhooie and I headed back towards my place and goaded ourselves into actually making our way down to the drain, resulting in me getting the above shot(among many others), it is a spectacularly large piece and just kind of makes you stop when you're up next to it. I'll have more as I get a proper moment to go through them(this is about all I can muster for tonight), but will probably just drop them in my stream or the outside world thread. ]]>
