   SUMMARY: The Service determines threatened status for the Australian koala under the Endangered Species Act (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.) as amended. The eucalyptus forest and woodland ecosystems on which this arboreal marsupial depends have been greatly reduced. Despite several conservation actions by the Government of Australia and State governments, the limited koala habitat continues to deteriorate. The species also is threatened byfragmentation of the habitat thatremains, disease, loss of genetic variation, and death by dogs and motorvehicles due to development.

   
   
   "Threatened" is actually one of thee lowest categories of assessed risk and might mean, for example, that there's insufficient information to say the population is stable or that while the population is still large it appeatrs to be declinign rapidly.

   Just because a species isn't in U.S. territory doesn't mean the U.S. has no impact on it. This in theory allows the U.S. to restrict koala imports from Australia, and restricts U.S. govt agencies from spending money that would impact koala habitats.

    @Johnplatt - controlling imports of koala and koala related products makes a lot of sense, thanks for clearing it up.
    
    Funny thing is, we Aussies wouldn't even bother with such a notion when we can pretty much do whatever we want on imports under the grounds of Quarantine.
