I seem to have taken the "Outside World" bit too far...

Yes, I was messing around with the telescope tonight and decided to take a few pictures. On the one above, I had forgotten to turn off the flash, hence the moon being that colour. The one below was also accidental, but I liked the way it looked:

@Andre Navarro - those are great! I like that accidental one best, I think - something about the foreground blurring gives the moon some real feeling of volume, it looks like a sphere, not just a disk, as it usually does in pictures. Really very nice!

These are from a trip I took two weeks ago to the San Rafael Swell in Utah with some friends:

I tried photostitching this panorama in Photoshop using the automated tool - it did a pretty good job! Some flaws in the sky I could fix later, probably. Click through it to see the really, really big original:

I've... not been taking very many pictures these days. This is largely due to the fact that even with the auto focus on, it's very difficult for me to tell if my shot is in focus or not and my hands have difficulty keeping the camera steady.

I took this of my friend's backyard with it's icky inflatable (cess)pool, which, again, wasn't totally in focus to begin with... and then tried to tweak it to show... sort of how I see.

Sorry but I'm not following.

My "local" LCS is in Oporto so I have 2 options: mail or get in a 1 hour train ride to Oporto and see the city. Guess what I've picked last time.
I've never been in downtown like this. Some places have a bad reputation but since I don't know which ones are the bad ones, I was careful and picked streets where I had seen tourist walking by.

Also amusing is the Lincoln with suicide doors and a surfboard on top. I don't get to see wacky things like that. I get idiots that have their pickups jacked high enough to spew their exhaust directly into my open window as they blare horrible new country music out of their speakers with their Confederate flags hanging in the back window. Stereoptyping. But oddly true. In the same vein, there seems to be a much higher incidence of that sort of thing in Indiana that there was in North Dakota. I always thought the hick contingent was pretty large up there. They have nothing on the yokels down here.

I wish I had a better camera with me when I made this shot. The composition made it irresistible, but my phone camera really wasn't up to the task. I also should have been a bit more square-on to the subjects. Potentially brilliant photographic scene if it were properly framed and focussed. Just image the shot was square-on, with the subjects defined by that rectangular frame, in a nice grainy black and white...that's the shot I had in my mind.

Two Cats, No Waiting. Did a low-budget film shoot today, at a location that makes industrial fastners. Like, rated for hundreds of thousands of pounds. In their back lot, there were about twelve feral cats. Clans, really. These guys were one clan who stood still long enough for me to take a picture of them.

The two brothers (I'm assuming they were male, they fought like demons but they were only weeks old. And SOOOO CUTE!) I couldn't get close enough to snap pics of. (Sorry, Roo.)

Stuttgart also has three big car makers there - Porsche, Mercedes and AMG. Each of them have a very new museum housing their historical cars in a modern art building. In Mercedes, you go up to the top of the building and work your way down. At Porsche, you start at the bottom and walk up. Here are some pics from Porsche

This last photo - a Porsche 924 - is also the first matchbox car I ever had. A little surprising to suddenly see it in real life.

I've got a Minota Maxxum (5?) that I keep meaning to try out, and I've got this big bag of film that a friend lest in my fridge and got all damp and condensed and would probably look GREAT and flawed and wierd now... but I'm on the other side of the camera world. My mother had a darkroom all my life, and I've got memories of hanging out with her in there when I was kindergarden age, but I was never allowed to use her cameras, and she never taught me any of her skills, and I never took any art or photo schooling. I'm analog retarded.

Being that you have a Minolta, does that mean if you DO go the DSLR route, you'll go for the Sony? I nearly went for the Sony myself, being that I inherited this Minolta and a few lenses. But gosh, I DO dig my PENTAX, even though it seems to be the odd man out in the land of Nikon and Canon.

Dave McKean hasn't made the jump to a digital camera yet, so you're in good company....

I love my Minolta. I love it love it love it. But as film keeps getting marginalized I'm having a hard time justifying the expense of processing. I'm hoping to get a Nikon D40 for a first DSLR. A few of my friends have Nikons, and I've been impressed with the photos I find online by D40s. Since I primarily work on digital images, it would just cut out another step from going and getting the film processed. Hell, I don't even get prints when I do, I just have them go straight to CD and I just take my negatives home with me. Add to that that it's only about US$500, and it's good for unemployed rickie's wallet.*

That being said, I love the stupid intuition of my Minolta's light meter. So long as you know what depth of field you want (or will end up with, depending on the light conditions and therefore the f-stop) you can get a lot of really good shots with about three seconds worth of work.

As far as my lenses are concerned (I have three) I might just get an adapter ring--if they have one to go from my Rokkors to a Nikon--so I can keep the same optics from one camera to the next. And so I don't have to dump the cash on buying two new telephoto lenses.

As far as analog photography, you might still be able to take classes. I know the college I was attending before we moved still had one section of analog photography. Of course, it's expensive, and the chemicals still make me a little nauseous if I go into a darkroom. But where's the fun in life if you're not breathing toxic fumes? The only official art schooling I've had was two semesters of photography in high school. And I can't even remember exactly how to do any of it. I haven't touched raw, exposed film in years. Take some shots, get it processed at Target, take the CD home, stick the shots in Photoshop, and never look back. Of course, I worry every day that my drive will explode. Even though I have them backed up on CD and on another drive, I still get nervous.

*Also, it's the same fucking camera Walmart used when my mother demanded "professional" pictures of my daughter--which they screwed us on...$90 for ten minutes of sitting, plus the added bonus of them retaining copyright, plus not even getting PRINTS at the time... As soon as I found out how much they charged her, I almost said "Here. Buy this camera. I'll give you five sets of shots this year, save you the expense, and be up on equipment. But then I didn't. For some reason. Oh, yeah, it's because I was about to strangle the Walmart photo person and needed to be talked down.

@rickie - love the last one. Re: cameras - I bought a Nikon D40 as my first camera about a year ago* and god I love it. Don't really have enough experience with other DSLRs to say whether it's better or worse than the competition, but it's a joy to use. One thing, though - if your negative scans are more than 6 and a bit meg (3008x2000px) you might feel a bit ripped off to trade up and find you've lost resolution.

* A year exactly next Wednesday. Seriously considering a birthday party.

@pi8you - I enjoy all your bridge & river pictures, but that top one is just wonderful. I once saw a picture of a half-built skyscraper that recorded a similar combination of fog pieced by shadows and sunlight that was captioned "solar fogogram (soul of a building)". A beautiful soul here, then.

@256 I would say that any DSLR today will trump a 35mm camera in terms of quality. If you compare a 200 iso shot from a DSLR with a scanned negative from an analog, you'll definitely see a difference, I think. If you compare two 1600 iso shots, the difference is astronomical! Perhaps not so much with the cheapest ones, but my Canon 40D, which is a higher-low-end to lower-mid-end camera, looks fabulous with the right lens on. Very fine detail indeed.

There are many factors to take into consideration, obviously. Some people prefer the noise you get at high ISOs from analogues more than the digitals, for example. Some people also prefer not knowing exactly what their pictures look like when they're taking it. Personally, I think there is no greater photographic joy than snapping shots in RAW format and playing with them first in Aperture to adjust exposures and dynamic range and then in Photoshop to go more in detail. I can sometimes spend five to six hours on a single photograph, and I never have to worry about destroying the original! I resisted using RAW for the longest time, but once I went there, I never looked back.

EDIT: Not to mention that you CAN actually change ISO levels on the fly.

For optimum quality I would recommend spending at least as much (if not more) on your lens as you do on your camera, the basic lenses that come bundled with dslrs can ruin your shots.

@256 - Nah, they're only 1500x1000 @ 256ppi. But, since I still have the negatives, I can make traditional enlargement prints without worrying about ppi. The chance to get better resolution for digital use is something I lust heavily for, though.

@slick is right. There is a lot of quality to be gained by a good lens as long as your camera is up for it. I still can't justify getting the really expensive ones, but I have an upper-low-end (You see a pattern here?) 17-70 mm Sigma lens which works more than well enough for doing 40x50 prints. Heck, I even made some 30x40s from an 18-200 mm Sigma which were fine... though they required some degree of sharpening to look good... Has to be said, though, that sharpening is always a good idea when working digitally. Not massive amounts, but subtle bits of sharpen can really give the details some extra punch.

I once made a very quick trip across Italy a few years ago (one week to see Rome, Venice, Florence and I don't know what else) I spent one morning in Siena but couldn't climb that tower because we hadn't time. @pi8you : IIRC, The Porsche hulk is an original body for an early racing model. The point at that part was to get the body as light as possible. This one was 130kg (I think - could have been pounds) which was several magnitudes lighter than the competition. there's a photo on the wall of identical bodies being carried about a couple of staff, and in one picture one very strong guy with it above his head.

I got out a couple of times over the past week!

California Plaza - they're setting up for a live performance of soundtrack music from the new Battlestar Galactica, conducted by the composer Bear McCreary. It was a great concert!

After it got dark, the plaza, being up on a hillside, made a great vantage point for some more photos of Downtown LA:

That was back on June 13th. This past Thursday I was able to go to the premier of Cirque Berserk: Beneath - it's kind of a macabre Cirque de Soliel, and it was great! These are some cameraphone snapshots from just before they let us all into the tent:

This was taken by my Italian cousin yesterday.

He doesn't speak English and (clearly) he's never used a camera before
He wanted to take a pic of Churchill's statue outside the parliament in London.

Apparently it was a one man rally.

It was heavy, but I got it out of the dumpster. Turned to be full of . . . well, these:

There was also a neat factory-wound bundle nylon tow rope. All those tools up there are good quality, not-worn-out, no-cheap crap. Just tossed away.

If you gave this to a kid in a third World slum he could set up a motorcycle repair business on the side of the road.

I've been meaning to post these for a while, I took them last week on my trip in to work. I recently moved to south london (god forbid such things for a north of the river boy like myself) and one of the things I've been impressed by is my bus ride to work.

The first big thing I had never really got close to that I pass is Battersea Power Station which is actually quite cool in all it's industrial revolution dirt and grime.

Every morning I get a pretty good view of Parliament, the London Eye, Westminster and Vauxhall bridge:

The MI6 building which facinates me, what on earth goes on behind those closed doors? I'm pretty sure it's mostly boring paperwork, but is it, really?

I pass the Imperial war museum, but it's not really worth photographing and I'm normally on the road side of the bus so don't have a clear shot of it. Then up over waterloo bridge:

Went on a little cemetery jaunt down the street from my house, this morning after work.

Just a sign a bit down the road and off an embankment. I'd like to point out there are no roads near the sign, or really any place you could fit a motorized vehicle.

The Revolutionary War Memorial outside the cemetery.

Just the front gate looking over the grounds.

There were a few of these. Little stones with just initials on them.

Even Revolutionary War soldiers still get flags. Going by the dates, he was in his fifties when he fought.

I think this is a mausoleum just across the street, but the writing on the sign is worn too much and it's locked up tight.

Just a basic shot of the cemetery from the corner.

This is the house you can see the corner of if you look in the gate photo.

Subshop as taken from the back ledge of the cemetery, one step off and you're in their parking lot. Best subs I've ever had come from this place.

Some of the older stones are a bit worn down.

These puzzled me. The little stones in the cemetery, which I thought were children's, but don't seem to be on inspection, all face one direction, while the bigger ones face in the other.

Another example of the above. Little ones face one way, big ones face the other.

There are other old cemeteries around here. Quite a few, actually. I may visit more for more photos if people like these ones.

The smaller stones are (probably, I can't really see clearly enough to say for certain but the ones I can see do match) footstones -- companions to the matching headstones. We don't really do that too much anymore, but you see it in a lot of older cemeteries. A google search should get you from there.

From Palm Beach to a parking lot:

That's the fireworks stand across the street. For an extra fee, a bounce castle, inflatable slide, and Noah's Ark. I should have lent them my dog so they could have a petting zoo.

We didn't get much in the way of fireworks growing up. Firecrackers and bottle rockets mostly, smuggled in a car trunk from Ohio. Once in a while I got my hands on a few packs, and counted myself lucky. There were rumors of "bricks" and "belts"of firecrackers, and "grosses" of bottlerockets. Eight year olds talked about fireworks in the same way high school pot heads talk about weed. If a classmate told me there was stuff like this, I'd have thought he was making shit up.

Recently I have seen:

Cheerleaders and Darth Vader appearing at an open air road safety event in suburban Sapporo (Darth's sash says Cycle Safety Co-ordinator or something along those lines). It was attended mostly by people who had to be there I think.

A very small rave at Hokkaido University Festival

A dance festival, where people danced down a rainy street to sparse crowds and yet never stopped smiling (It's Yosakoi Soran Matsuri in Sapporo).

a brief and violent storm was had, and after-wards the world was bathed in an eerie warm glow, turning more and more pink as dusk descended. I've never seen cloud formations like this in my life.

… and so, I decided to try and lift my spirits and take photographs of the world after the storm. I dragged my puffy/splotchy-faced self outside, walked the few blocks into the center of town, and took pictures of the sky and a mostly empty and under construction parking lot, and then walked inside a drug store for some sweets.

Within 5 minutes I was approached by a police officer. In the store.

Someone had called the police and reported me for taking pictures.

Thank you for ruining my attempt at combatting my mood of morose doom.

(These American suburbanites DO realise that there are CCTV cameras on the interior and perimeter of essentially EVERY commercial building, right?!)

The weather changing has made NJ (and most of the north east coast, I think) have sudden and periodic violent thunder and lightening storms, which seem to pass quickly. It never used to be like this, as far as I can remember. I suppose we might be getting somewhere else's weather.

@Rachæl Nœl: Oddly enough, those have never shown up adjacent to a thunderstorm. In fact, thunderstorms are quite rare in Fresno. Ah the joys of living in the friggin desert.
