So what are you listening to right now?

New week's releases should be up at http://www.piccadillyrecords.com at some point today, if they're not already - just choose a genre from left and click "magic mix" to stream excerpts from the new releases.

Currently listening to Christina Carter, which is a mistake, as it's a bit soporific for a Monday morning...

Just came back from a roadtrip, listening to lots of compilations, but as far as albums go:

William Shatner: Has Been: I can't stop listening. Sometimes awful, momentarily brilliant. "You'll Have Time" is the track I listen to most often. Help me!

Rammstein: Reise Reise. I am getting more and more into this band. I use Amerika in my anthropology class.

Chumbawamba: Assorted stuff. I found some of their stuff on their website, some odds & ends on music services. Some of it makes me scratch my head, but most of it is pretty cool, and much less bouncy than their Tubthumper period.

Various: Mortal Combat: Annihilation. Don't ask. It was good for that point in the drive when the road was flat and forever ahead of me. "Flawless victory!"

Flogging Molly: Bopping around between albums. "With a Wonder and a Wild Desire" keeps getting played.

I've already played most of the albums I was given for christmas half to death, but Grey Will Fade and The Deep Blue by Charlotte Hatherley still make me smile whenever they come around on the playlist.

But today? ( ) by Sigur Ros. Took the phone off the hook, hid from everyone else in the office and played the whole goddamn thing straight through. It's just a brilliantly constructed musical journey from start to finish, from the first gentle steps of "Untitled 1" to the feedback and static that follow the epic noise of "Untitled 8".

And I've spent the past half an hour staring at the iPod, trying to figure out how to follow it.

Weird mix for me this week...

The wife and I just saw a local theatre production of AVENUE Q, the full frontal puppet nudity Broadway smash being developed so that local community theatres and high schools (!) can stage this production (albeit in edited for content versions). Good stuff, like watching SESAME STREET on acid, and damn catchy as well, so many songs from that have been ping-ponging around my head.

Other than that, I've been on a 90's acid house/pre-rave bent musically, so a mix of S'EXPRESS, BABY FORD, 808 STATE have been making the rounds on the sound system. And for reasons I can't fathom, I've also gotten out my old first album of SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK, which, yes, as predicted, still is a trashy, futuristic junk sample masterpiece of musical masturbation! Ah, the 80's. What were we thinking? The future looked so cool and spiky and tarted up back then.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik was more amazing for the concepts behind it rather than the actual execution of the music, although getting Giorgio Moroder (Donna Summer, Sparks, "Midnight Express") to produce their album was utter genius. Remember, they actually sold the space between the tracks on the LP as advertising space, which is at least more honest than selling your soul to sing songs on McDonald's commercials.

It was interesting to me to see people trying to live up to the reputation of what the future was supposed to be back in the 80's. Much more romanticized, at the same time making way for the dirty dystopia of Max Headroom: 20 Minutes Into the Future and Thunderdome-type stuff. The guys in SSS were also much more interested in seeing how far they could fuck people over and make them think what they were doing WAS the future of music. You know they were all laughing their asses off with each chart position they hit. Tony James from Generation X said in multiple interviews that they just pushed the "on" buttons on the sequencers and let them spool out. They were also pre-dating things like Public Enemy's sample heavy rap and countering the more intellectual/punny Art of Noise. Old punks like James probably enjoyed watching interviewers squirm trying to ask them serious questions on Top of the Pops.

For those who don't know or remember this band, here's their "big" hit, Love Missile F1-11: Love Missile F1-11 (which you MAY remember better from the early scenes in "Ferris Beuller's Day Off"

Note: this is the "uncensored version", which laughingly, when it DID get censored, only put black bars over the guns they're sporting in the limo.
