In terms of my thoughts about regular boxed panel layouts, I actually think in the majority of cases it reduces comics to little more than cut-and-paste storyboards with integrated scripts (part of the reason I think films so regularly look to US comics at the moment). Readability is obviously the primary concern of the artist and writer, but imo the page should be thought of as a piece of artwork and a composition in its own right, or the storytelling potential of the medium just isn't being explored thoroughly. Put another way, there are far more ways to effectively guide a reader's eye round a page and from bubble to bubble than the formal method derived from how we scan text, so why should we be using textual scanning to parse images? Something's wrong with that picture (lol, shoot me).

I love how the influence of the gods takes place off-panel or behind-panel, Yaweh and Marduk and Ishtar reaching into panels when necessary to influence the action. the power of these gods pulling the strings throughout history is very effectively conveyed.

another way to break the linear box read is to cram the panels full of information (Transmetropolitan, Top Ten, Watchmen) where a great deal of the world building is done subtly, in the backgrounds. in Freakangels, you've built the world through stunning, silent panoramas, and I'm struck every time by the knowledge that each of those rooftops is real, and in place, esp. re-reading it in print.

I'm also reminded of a brilliant visual technique from Watchmen, where Rorschach is sitting in the diner and we've got a first-person from him looking at the garbage can across the street while some pony-tails are harassing someone, then cuts to a side view of the same corner, from over by the newsstand. I've always appreciated that particular camera trick, though again, we're still talking about rigid panels and comics-as-storyboard, but used to the fullest potential.
