@Paul I know exactly what you mean. after posting last night, I went back and read the first trade of Walking Dead (after finally catching up to the present issue with the series, and I noticed how Kirkman and Moore really exploited the dramatic potential of the panel layouts, esp for the first few reveals... though still in a very left-to-right flow... another example that springs to mind is Testament. I love how the influence of the gods takes place off-panel or behind-panel, Yaweh and Marduk and Ishtar reaching into panels when necessary to influence the action. the power of these gods pulling the strings throughout history is very effectively conveyed.
another way to break the linear box read is to cram the panels full of information (Transmetropolitan, Top Ten, Watchmen) where a great deal of the world building is done subtly, in the backgrounds. in Freakangels, you've built the world through stunning, silent panoramas, and I'm struck every time by the knowledge that each of those rooftops is real, and in place, esp. re-reading it in print.
I'm also reminded of a brilliant visual technique from Watchmen, where Rorschach is sitting in the diner and we've got a first-person from him looking at the garbage can across the street while some pony-tails are harassing someone, then cuts to a side view of the same corner, from over by the newsstand. I've always appreciated that particular camera trick, though again, we're still talking about rigid panels and comics-as-storyboard, but used to the fullest potential.
do you have any examples? obviously, simone bianchi is really pushing the envelope with warren on amazing x-men. that's more along the lines of what you're talking about when you say:imo the page should be thought of as a piece of artwork and a composition in its own right, or the storytelling potential of the medium just isn't being explored thoroughly. Put another way, there are far more ways to effectively guide a reader's eye round a page and from bubble to bubble than the formal method derived from how we scan text, so why should we be using textual scanning to parse images?

Human eyes apparently track differently on text than on the web; just wondering if that affects layout decisions when designing a webcomic, if it's taken into consideration for FA, or if the difference is considered not enough to be really important.

One thing I've been meaning to compliment in this new storyline is the colouring. The opening up of a 'summer' pallette with the brighter oranges, greens and blues has really given an extra element of time flowing and depth to the story.
After the darker claustraphobic colouring of the first storylines this has really opened up the tone and optimism that they are building a new future in Whitechapel and, for me, has reinforced the ominous note that the brutal murder brings.

Third panel on page 4 clipped to arkady from the waist up, with the text replace with "Chikkenz!!!" That's the shirt I want. Both Arkady and chikkenz all in one fell swoop! (Although it wouldn't actually be a fell swoop, now would it--more of a joyous swoop, unless it was an overly limited run and I didn't get one, then that swoop would be pretty damn FELL now wouldn't it!??!!!
I got my KK silhouette t-shirt in the mail about five minutes ago.
Much dancing around the office occurred:) Yea!!!

This third volume is looking very promising. I enjoyed the last two volumes immensely. I love the humor and Kait has quickly made it as a FreakAngel favorite in my book.

Damn straight, I never heard of Quincy until FreakAngels, but I'm cool with Kait having sexual fantasies about Quincy. ; )

Also, the implication seems to be that Kaitlyn is, in fact, gay. However, since Quincy is A) a crimefighting genius and B) always had hot young chicks on his boat, Kait would happily have done Quincy. As I said above, Quincy's awesomeness easily surpasses mere sexual orientation.
