I'm feeling a bit mentally exhausted, actually. I'm still pimping the new novel, Butcher Bird, wherever I can, as well as the reprint of my sad, lost Vertigo comic, Accelerate.

Right now, I have two new books making the rounds. One is my first YA novel and the other is my first (and probably only) attempt to launch a fantasy book series. I'm describing the series attempt as "Richard Stark does urban fantasy." I'm an American. I like magic, but I like guns, too. Why shouldn't angels wear steel-toe boots? Why shouldn't fairies carry knuckledusters? I want all that in my fantasy and I don't see very much. Not very much that I think is worth a damn. Mostly what I see in that vein is celluloid puke like "Underworld" or books and comics with a kind of mushy "Magic good, machines bad" attitude that stinks of week-old patchouli and mildewed Flower Power posters. But I love to be wrong about these things. Maybe I've missed an author or a series somewhere. If anyone can point me to good material in this vein, please comment here or send me a note. And don't tell me about Harry Dresden. I know about Harry Dresden. I don't have anything to say about Harry Dresden.

As I said at the beginning of this ramble, my head feels empty at the moment. I should be working on the sequel to Butcher Bird, which I have pretty well mapped out, but I can't jump into another novel right now. I need a little space to recharge and get excited about writing about the same damned people in the same damned story for several months straight. Reading and writing short stories is usually a good cure for these brain death periods. I'll bash away at some regular stories, plus some of the shorts that I used to write for InfiniteMatrix. I have a lot of material storied up.

I also have a few comic series ideas, but I've been out of that world long enough that most of my old contacts have moved on. I'm looking for backdoors and transoms to sneak through, but trespassing isn't that easy since 9/11. Still, I'm skulking and will find a way in.

I'm also doing a lot of photography. I have access to a crumbling, ruined building and am trying to shoot there as much as possible before the owner starts fixing it up. I've started doing some shooting for the fetish site, BlueBlood. Amelia G who runs the place is a sweetheart, and she's running a successful venture. Always a nice combination. If anyone's interested in seeing my work, you don't have to be on BlueBlood. I have work on ModelMayhem and DeviantArt. I also have my own site at KaosBeautyKlinik.com.

That's it for now. I'm sick. I'm can't breath. I'm not even sure I'm typing this or just fever dreaming it. If this all a hallucination, it still feels like I've yammered too long. Time for more drugs.

 Richard,

I'd recommend taking a look at White-Wolf's Changeling/Mage role-playing lines. Faeries living in packs on the streets, mages using technology as conduits for magic. A nice mix-up of an urban modern setting and classical "fantasy" themes.

I feel much the same as you regarding the mush out there and I've always found White Wolf's ideaspace really appealing. Skip the rules sections and the background material can be quite well-done.

You can get alot of their older books on PDF . Mage: The Ascension and Changeling: The Lost

I first found your work through Warren's links to Infinite Matrix. Wish you all the best.

Thanks for the pointer to Shadowrun, pi8you. I'll take a look.

I'll also have a look at the White-Wolf stuff, though I'm not much for roleplaying games. I find just being me confusing enough.

>I really enjoyed your Dispatches from Probability Beach!
Thanks. I've had good feedback on those. I plan on restarting a retooled version of this summer, hopefully with some better tech and without my stupid face doing wraprounds. I'll just let the stories stand or fall on their own. I also want to get my Fisher-Price PXL 2000 toy videcam fixed so that I can incorporate some of that ultra-low res footage into the series.

Thanks for the good wishes, Z.

 Buy My Crap!
Hot Babes with Masks and Knives and Stuff!

I've finally opened a DeviantArt store selling prints of my dark and smutty art. Buy some for Valentine's Day. Send some to your mom for her birthday. Nail some up in your kids' room just to make them cry.

My prints have a thousand and one uses and, it is claimed by some, will cure impotence, gout and "Melancholy Nipple Syndrome." Plus my prints will kill the earwigs that ate into your brain while you were asleep.

My prints are pretty, durable and they smell like fresh cinnamon rolls. My prints will be your boon companion, your silent partner, your secret lover. My prints can end world hunger and save the whales. Just the whales. Not the dolphins. Fuck the dolphins. A dolphin slept with my mom, then stole some money from her purse and put naked pictures of her on its Flickr page. I eat canned tuna every day hoping that there's a little dolphin meat in there.

The point is that you will love my prints. My prints have been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. My prints knocked out Mike Tyson in two rounds. My prints reunited The Spice Girls. My prints died for your sins.

Buy my prints for yourself or for a friend. Buy them for an enemy. I don't care. I just want your money. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Richard Kadrey

PS: Seriously, I really, really want your money.

KaosBeautyKlinik store

Download My New Novel For Free!

Night Shade Books has made the entire text of the urban fantasy novel Butcher Bird available as a DRM-free download, in a wide variety of formats. Richard Kadrey is the author of one of the quintessential cyberpunk novels, Metrophage.

About Butcher Bird:
"Spyder Lee is a happy man who lives in San Francisco and owns a tattoo shop. One night an angry demon tries to bite his head off before he's saved by a stranger. The demon infected Spyder with something awful - the truth. He can suddenly see the world as it really is: full of angels and demons and monsters and monster-hunters. A world full of black magic and mysteries. These are the Dominions, parallel worlds full of wonder, beauty and horror. The Black Clerks, infinitely old and infinitely powerful beings whose job it is to keep the Dominions in balance, seem to have new interests and a whole new agenda. Dropped into the middle of a conflict between the Black Clerks and other forces he doesn't fully understand, Spyder finds himself looking for a magic book with the blind swordswoman who saved him. Their journey will take them from deserts to lush palaces, to underground caverns, to the heart of Hell itself."

Download Butcher Bird here

My agent's announcement is finally out in Publishers Weekly, so I can post this here.:

I just sold the first three books in a supernatural series by my client, Richard Kadrey, to Diana Gill at HarperCollins/Eos, at auction. This was based on the first 100 pages of book 1 and a synopsis of the rest. It's called SANDMAN SLIM, and the main character, Stark, is a wizard who returns after eleven years in Hell (where he worked as an assassin and hit man for the various bad guys down below) to find out who betrayed him and murdered his girlfriend, Alice. SANDMAN SLIM has a sharp, edgy voice and a male lead—and I think it will stand out in what is becoming a very big subgenre in fantasy. Diana calls it “the unholy love-child of Christopher Moore and Warren Ellis.”

Richard started out, 20 years ago, as one of the first major writers of cyberpunk (his debut novel, METROPHAGE, is considered one of the classics of this subgenre). He had a bit of a quiet period, and then last year Night Shade published his first urban fantasy novel, BUTCHER BIRD, to much acclaim. I think Diana is going to do a great job with the series, and Richard is very happy to be working with her.

Having been a freelance writer and a full-time in-house developer for White Wolf, I can confirm that you'd better love it if you intend to write for them (or, indeed, anything hobby-gaming related) because the money alone will be... unconvincing. Writing for RPGs mixes the high-pressure deadlines of journalism with the staggering word counts of novels for the sake of a niche market that few people pay attention to and even fewer respect. But the good news is that you can make literally hundreds of dollars doing it. I say this as someone who still writes for the hobby, genuinely loves gaming, and is more than a little bit fond of White Wolf and its people.

Should White Wolf relaunch its fiction line(s), though, as they threaten to, that money could be better. Let me cross my fingers while the rest of you go about your lives.

Along with the game material, you get in-depth tutorials on real-world histories and applications, especially in Voodoo.

Also, Changeling: the Dreaming is, indeed, some pretty twee stuff. Actually, on reflection, most of the Old World of Darkness stuff was some pretty twee stuff (Why, yes, I do play a mage/ghoul who can change into a kittycat, what of it?). Changeling: The Lost, on the other hand, is a pretty damn cool horror game that really fits into the World of Darkness setting. Ditto for the rest of the New World of Darkness.

I genuinely appreciate all the suggestions that people have made here, but the ugly truth is that I probably won't every be able to look at much of the gaming stuff. My eyes tend to bounce off that material, which isn't me judging the work because I can't get far enough to judge it. It's as if we're similarly charged magnets that can't get too close. Perhaps the poles will flip for one of us one day--it's happened to me before with other kind so books and with other artforms--but, for me, gaming books remain a victim of Zeno's paradox. They're clear across the room and I can't quite make the distance.

Not a problem. Really, unless you're planning to play or GM the game in question, you're better off looking at another, cheaper source of material. White Wolf products range between 28 - 40 dollars or so per book, which is a little steep for research costs. I stand by my recommendation for John Dies at the End, though. I also like Glen Cook. Cook doesn't puts guns and technology in his books, but they have a definate "fantasy noir" feel to them.

Warren mentioned on Twitter that he’d received a draft of my new book, Sandman Slim. He’s part of our assault on the more famous and our attempt to TAC weld me to their large coattails. I’m too far away from England to blow Warren personally and my beard is probably too scratchy, so if someone wants to put on their kneepads and get to work in my place, I’d appreciate it.

Here’s Sandman Slim 101.

The book is the first of a new series. It’s my crass attempt to cross urban fantasy with spaghetti westerns and 50s-60s era American crime fiction (think of Richard Stark’s Parker novels or Kubrick’s The Killing), all told in the voice of a snarky LA punk. Your basic revenge story with ritual magic, guns, decapitations, angels, devils, Homeland Security and skinheads. But funny. Funny decapitations.

It’s about a guy named Stark, the LA punk I mentioned earlier. He’s part of a secret subculture of magic humans who call themselves the Sub Rosa. Before the book opens, Stark has been betrayed by some other Sub Rosas and sent to Hell in exchange for power. The book is about Stark crawling out of Hell and back to Earth to kill everybody who betrayed him and anyone who gets in his way. Like I said, it’s a comedy.

It’s also NOT a noir mystery. I wanted to keep away from the Chandler and Hammet-isms of other books. I love both of those writers, but their bones have been picked clean by writers who are better at noir stuff than I am. Besides, the magical detective idea already exists. We don’t need another Harry Dresden because the last time I looked, the old one was still very much alive and doing quite well. Stark is the opposite of Dresden. He’s utterly untrained and not very good at detective work. He’s a punk, a fuck up and a killer. And he learned to kill while in Hell, so he’s not subtle about it.

One more fun fact. I was able to use the lyrics to a Tom Waits song in the book because Waits personally approved it after he saw what I was doing. Whatever else happens with the book, getting a pass from Waits made it worth writing.

If you have any more questions, toss them out there. I might not answer them because I don’t want to put out any spoilers. Also I want you to buy the damned thing, not skim it here, you cheap bastards.

That’s it for now. Thanks for asking.

No. No more Butcher Birds unfortunately. In it’s own way I see Sandman Slim as the Butcher Bird sequel. It deals with a some of the same material (conflicts between Heaven and Hell, the nature of Lucifer and evil, how shitty navigating a magical world while still trying to keep out of the way of drunk film executives and posers on Harleys would be), but in way that’s more urban and, I think, a bit more advanced. Besides, the next sections of Butcher Bird were set much more of a fantasy world and I just don’t want to fall down that particular rabbit hole. LA is fantasyland enough with wenches and forsooths. And before anyone gets offended, I’m being sarcastic. Please don’t tell me about your favorite sophisticated fantasy worldbuilding. I just feel that it’s not where I ought to be. Think about Robert De Niro. He’s a great actor, but he sucked in The Mission. He’s a modern guy who’s not quite able to pull off that kind of period piece. I feel that I’m the same kind of writer. I can stick my toe into fantasy worlds, but living there for a whole book feels like a mistake. For now. I’ll probably try it down the road, but for the moment I’m better off torturing aging punks, bald chicks and crack whores. Better for me and better for readers.

Forsooth.

Thanks. Ree was a blast to work with. I want to stalk her and do it again.

We finished a little early today and I booked a shoot with Satine Phoenix, but my rental car died. We're going to try again tomorrow.

The movie biz monkey dancing has gone better than I thought it would. I had dinner at an old school producer's house last night. The house is a Tuscan villa on 12 acres of land on a hill overlooking Benedict Canyon. A famous politician built it for an equally famous movie star when he was banging her back in the 30s. When the fog and smog clear, you can see all the way from the hills, across downtown LA to Catalina. Basically, it's The Great Gatsby up there. The producer apologized for dinner because his regular chef had the night off. He's old school Italian, which means that when dinner is served you eat until you have aneurysm. He's very formidable and sweet at he same time. The kind of guy you know instantly will be a great friend or have you dropped into a woodchipper and used to fertilize his lemon trees.

This afternoon, I finally got together with Satine Phoenix to shoot her official Pornsaints portrait. Satine has not only starred in her own movies, but she's one of the leads of the premiere episode of kink.com's Upper Floor series. After we finished the portrait shoot, just for fun, she sat in her antique wheelchair and I strangled her while taking pictures with my little Leica. Some days are better than others.

 @Richard Kadrey

I remember way up-thread we talked a bit about RPG books as research material. I have a suggestion you could worse than to look at:

The Wonderland rulebook is stuffed with weird concepts and ideas. In truth you'll go through a good two-thirds of it before you get into the actual "gaming" portion. All the rest is setting, atmosphere and strangeness. The tagline of the game is "You're not losing your grip on reality. Reality is losing its grip on you. And the best part from a research perspective is that the books, even the JAGS (Just Another Gaming System) books are downloadable for free. You should seriously check these things out for inspiration.

Popped up a review of the Sandman Slim audiobook. Already subjected poor Mr. Kadrey to it, but figured others might be interested as well. Think the only thing I missed out on was the spelling of some things (obviously) so the print edition will likely be gracing my shelves soon as well. I was concerned about the narrator's voice at first, but ended up loving it/raving about it in the end.

Inventive. There wasn't a single character that I didn't like or hate for all the right reasons. It wasn't a stale overdone stories about a vampire or a Tolkien fantasy world. It was raw and gritty and I didn't put it down once. Excellent work. It is exactly this kind of stuff that gives me hope for fantasy literature, and I myself try to write.

Hi. I haven't been around here for a while since I'm finishing Sandman Slim 2. I'm stopping by today because some nice news came out of the blue. Barnes & Noble listed Sandman Slim among the "Best Paranormal Fantasy Novels of the Last Decade."

It's actually a pretty impressive list. If you're looking for modern and/or cool urban fantasy novels, the list contains a lot of very good suggestions.

With any luck, the new book will be done next week. Wish me luck!

Here's the Barnes & Noble link

 @ Richard Kadrey

Green does bizarre stuff really well. He's also good at cool names for strange stuff. That all said, whenever I read a Green book I get the feeling that I'm not really sharing a universe, but sharing a brain. After a while, you notice that various personalities all share similar characteristics (the cowardly fop who only reluctantly joins the hero suddenly "mans up" and become an uber-badass slayer of beasties, like that.) I feel like I'm reading a ventriloquist, because all the characters in his works essentially have at their root the same voice. And while in practical terms that's true of every writer, in Green's works it's more... pronounced. I don't know if I'm explaining it right. At base his stuff is enjoyable, but it'd probably be best not to read a whole lot of it at once because of the repetition factor is my point, I suppose.

 Hi Richard,
I read the 46 of your short stories that are available from feedbooks on an iphone the other day. T'were a slow, 14 hour shift at the adult bookstore. I also tracked down copies of 'Butcher Bird' and 'Sandman Slim' a while back, very enjoyable reads. Have you read 'The Raw Shark Texts' by Steven Hall? Several sections of that book have a really good urban fantasy feel.

Hi. I’ve been absent from the site long enough that I almost feel like I shold almost reintroduce myself, however in terms of priorities that’s right behind, “Find George Bush laser codpiece to go with the Blackhawk attack jetpack.” If you’re around here I figure that you know who I am. If you don’t, I have a fairly out of date Wikipedia entry. It’s gets the basic facts right. It just doesn’t have the new ones.

Here are a few updates since I pulled my Ambrose Bierce.

The Sandman Slim paperback is out and doing well. It’s a mass market so it’s easy to shoplift. Steal it or buy it. I get paid either way.

I’m working on the third Sandman Slim book. The second, KILL THE DEAD, will be in bookstores and on Amazon in late Septemebr. I encourage you to get the book from a local independent store, but if you’re at McMurdo Station or in Ulan Bator I won’t hold it against you if you opt for mail order. I’ll be posting excerts from the book in my Twitter feed and longer ones will appear on the Eos site closer to publication. I’ll post the url when it goes live.

I’ll be at the San Diego ComicCon from 7/22-24 doing some panels and signing whatever the hell people shove at me. If I sign someone else’s book, your cankles or your baby, it means you got too close too fast when I had a pen in my hand. I’ll also be at the NY ComicCon in October.

The Sandman Slim movie creeps forward slowly. A script is on the way and apparently the production company is director shopping. I don’t know much more than that and when I do I probably won’t be able to talk about it. Hollywood is run like a John le Carre novel. There’s a lot more cloak and dagger than coke and porn stars which seems fundamentally wrong. Welcome to the 21st century.

I also might be doing an online movie column. If it happens, I’ll talk about it here.

Yes. People have been speculating about Suspect Zero for a long time. There's no real evidence of his existence and he seems to be a ghost manifestation of the easy mobility of American society. Years ago, law enforcement from several states thought that Henry Lee Lucas was a kind of Suspect Zero. He was a drifter and known killer who confessed to hundreds of murders cross the US. His story fell apart when officials finally compared the dates of some killings and realized that Lucas couldn't have made it cross-country in time to commit both. Still, the fact it was so easy to believe in Lucas points to the power of the Suspect Zero myth and our desire to believe in it.

Serial Killers and the mythos that surround them is fertile ground to till, if you can find an original approach, and you certainly did that. Loved it.

Also, back to Sandman Slim, if you ever think of doing a comics adaptation you should totally get Ben Templesmith on board. Fell showed that he can do the gritty realism, and he style would be perfect for some of the nastier creatures... The image in my head when Candy was doing her thing towards the end was especially Templesmith-esque.
