Agree with ScottBieser both about the misdirection and about the misidentification. If there was wobble in the throat injury (and the throat injury wasn't savagely catastrophic, as in a near-decapitation), I would've guessed a smaller blade, but I could also be reading too much into it.

Ever try cutting someone's throat with a long blade? The angle is a bitch. To get a crescent-cut, you have to continually angle the blade in a weird, yawing see-saw.

Uh, not that I'd know anything about that kind of stuff.

Once again I must compliment Warren & Paul on the beautiful pacing of this story. Parceling out the exposition so we have to dig for information, not just in the hints that the dialogue gives but in the attitudes and reactions of the 'Angels... truly this is a rich and precise world. Makes the story all the more present and chillingly accessible. I dunno...somehow it got easy to put myself in the poor sod's place and to get through everything, the end of the world, starvation, probably loneliness (and no chips!) only to be killed? Had to shudder and shake it off.

i know a little about sharp things so i'll throw in my 2 cents. Nobody would cut a throat from behind with a sword its just against the nature of a sword (the idea is to keep some distance and take advantage of the swords lenght and power duh). A slash from a sword at the neck would easily decapitate a person. To leave such a precise and clean cut would take a very skilled swordsman with lighting speed (no defensive wounds on victim). The sword would have to strike before the victim had any chance of reaction...pretty impossible escpecially when the victim might have seen the killer standing before him with a sword. The slash on the abdomen would be very hard to do while the victim was on their back....standing his guts would have spilled all over the place and as I remember his guts were still in his body cavatiy and again no kind of defensive wounds to be found.

I think the weapon is less obvious.. the sharpest edge that exists on the planet is chipped obsidian...yes obsidian...sharper than a surgeons scalpel. It could easily create such clean and devastating cuts. Throat slash from behind...then as Kait implied...jack ripper style across the gut after the victim is down. Obsidian is also pretty common on the British Isle. It would be easy to conceal ..you could store it in the dirt or in water and just make some little chips when it looses its edge (unlike steel).

I definitely don't think Kait is the killer...she was way to turned on at the idea of having some real cop work to do. As far as our resident "jerk" Freak goes...he seems to just screw em and not kill em.

Flaking a blade takes work; and the longer the blade the more likely you're going to mess things up while making it or have it break during a struggle, especially if it came across bone. Also, not all obsidian is of a grade where it would make a good weapon. Why go for stone age tech when an bowie-type or other hunting knife would be more easily available, and reliable?

In a scavenging society, I don't see why someone would go to such a length to get such a blade (unless they raided a cutlery shop?)...I'd guess that people would be more likely to use what they had at hand, though perhaps modified for purpose.

We know there was a murder, but we don't know why it was done; and there could be a heck of a lot of whys.
