There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character. Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

From Jess Nevins, another very short one that should be fun. It's not immediately clear, so let me state up front: Gerry Carlyle is a woman.

Carlyle, Gerry. Gerry Carlyle was created by Arthur K. Barnes and appeared in a series of stories in Thrilling Wonder Stories from 1937-1946, several of which were collected in Interplanetary Hunter (1956). Gerry Carlyle is the beautiful and fabulous galactic big game hunter, a sort of Frank Buck Rogers, who works for the London Interplanetary Zoo, capturing dangerous alien beasts on far distant and often dangerous alien worlds, and bringing the BEMs back to the Zoo. In this Gerry is assisted by her bold and rather clever sidekick Tommy Strike, with whom Gerry has a love/hate relationship.

But! Googling around a bit, I also found this:

That;s Gerry Carlyle, popular space heorine of The Interplanetary Huntress in her famous mini-skirted spacesuit

God help us. You might want to ignore that bit. Looking for a 21C solution to these characters, after all.

Your task, as ever, is to re-invent that into something a 21st Century audience could enjoy.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread. No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

    You have one week. Go.

This had me imagining the physics of wearing a spacesuit that's only sealed above the waist. That would be an interesting explosive decompression.

    Anyway...

    gerry carlyle

Wearing a skirt nabbing animals, and shooting beams. Went with light hair just because I draw too much dark hair.

My preliminary version. I'll try to work up something with aliens and monsters and that dude who slaves over her every move. But I needed to practice first.

    catafracture: nice suit!

Nygaard: Neil Gaiman should be writing that! Looks cool...

Also, didn't know where else to post this, so I'll just do it here: My weirdo roommate has been listening to the Harry Heck ("I'm gonna play this at your funeral...") song from the Tom Jane "Punisher" movie OVER AND OVER again for the last hour. He tends to do that with music, but he's really making that already silly song unbearable for me... Lament. That was actually one of my favorite parts of the movie; so abstract...

Gerry is brushing her hand against Tommy's crotch...

For some reason, I don't think that I'm going to be able to get Jim Silke's "Rascals in Paradise" imagery out of my head, for this one... A jetpack chick with an elephant gun flying around an alien jungle? Please...

FUCKfuckfuck. Yet again I hate my treacherous hands for just never getting such skills as for drawing things that don't look like utter shite.

I always imagined Gerry would be an Americanization and shortening of Geronima. Which was my paternal grandmother's name, which was a name I realized sometime after I turned 30 that I wish I had (my oldest brother was named after her husband, my paternal grandfather, Jose). What joy to try and turn the little old Mexican lady I knew in my youth into a space adventurer for the 21st Century and beyond! Particularly with the surname of Carlyle. Hm. (That is I've got a good chunk of the story in my head already but I'll keep it to myself as requested.) My abuelita died in 1988 at the age of 94.

I'm going to at least see if I can find a photo of her somewhere. Maybe I can do some clever scanning and rendering with mixed media.

For some reason, when I saw that we had a person's name for the REMAKE, I thought about Gerry having a normal job with a normal business card.
I will have a more interesting submission later in the week, I promise...
