wow.... So, my husband and I have been a vendor at this particular tri-monthly event for the last year and have been having alot of fun, but the guy who's been running it kinda let the advertising go to hell, and attendence dropped off considerably. So the night before our last convention he told us that he didn't have time to deal with the convention anymore (he also runs a bunch of reptile and exotic pet conventions) and wanted to know if we wanted to try to run it ourselves.
We jumped at the chance and indeed, did a little dance. Furthermore we apparently have a rich benefactor that's wanting to help out in any way he can...A really nice old fella whos been in the business for a long long time, who brought some of his books down to the convention just for the hell of it...not going to do any name mentioning though...he's got alot of good ideas and has alot of good contacts.
Other than just being super excited that a freakjob like me gets to run a public event , the point of the post is, does anyone have any helpful advice on running a big public event like this?
Just throwing this in for the hell of it -- if you can find money for plane/train tickets and hotels, there's a shitload of comics creators in surrounding states, I think...
yeah, I was bugging Kirkman about attending but he's been too busy on books:P... there's alot of folks who live within a few hours drive, but I'm still waiting to get my contact info from the guy who was organizing it previously. I'm still not sure how much money we'll have to throw at this yet but we've got one in march and then we're hoping for a big FCBD convention.
would this be around the Lexington/Richmond area? Thats my old stomping grounds from my college days and I would love to make the drive down for something like this.
WOOT...yeah, it's about fourty or so miles eastish of Lexington. :) Anyone that wants to help out or wants more information can email me at white_crow_comics@hotmail.com or hit me up at my personal myspace account: http://www.myspace.com/pookamonster
I'm in Northern Kentucky and I would be more than happy to help by spreading the word, posting bills / hand billing, and whatever else you would need up here, or down there.
best of luck with this. i'm sorry i'm unable to attend, but i'd love to see you guys turn this into something great. i don't get back home often enough.
