The grandaddy of web-comics, Penny Arcade, is running with a pretty cool idea over the next few days.

Beginning today, projecting through Friday and culminating on Monday, we will offer you one page "treatments" of three comics which differ radically from our usual output. Next week, we'll get a poll up to determine which one you'd like to see us investigate further. Then, later this summer - during the San Diego Comic Con would be my guess - we'll upload a storyline based on what the metamind has chosen.

What's really interesting is the huge response they've gotten already. A one page "treatment" for a sort of fantasy world boy scouts already has their fans clamoring for swag with the logo. In less than a day, they built a fanbase for a new project.

It always astounds me how fucking completely these guys knock it out of the park when they go beyond the three-panel strip with game commentary and dick jokes. I'm very much a fan of their regular stuff, but projects like this and Cardboard Tube Samurai (It's a samurai. With a cardboard tube. And yet it's fucking poetry!) really hammer it home that these guys are genuinely monstrously talented storytellers, and I'd follow pretty much anything they did.

I sometimes feel a little sorry for Mike, he's clearly quite a talented artist but he vary rarely gets to stetch himself on the comic. He did try mixing up the art style once, but they got too many complaints, so he just has to content himself with side projects like these.

Worth checking his Deviant Art page by the way, I can't remember what it is right now though.

i'll be honest and say i've not looked at penny arcade much. maybe i don't play enough video games, or maybe i'm just not keen on the newspaper-strip format, but i've seen it once or twice a couple years back and not been back since. not saying what they do isn't good, it's clearly a well-polished example of it's genre, just it's not my thing. but if i saw that lookouts comic in a shop and it looked like it did in the promo stuff i'd more'n likely pick it up.

thanks for the heads-up on this, i'll be interested to see what the other concepts they come up with are.

You simply can watch Mike's skill build steadily to its current high level.

Jerry's writing has always been super, but he really shines in newsposts.

They are really one of those once-in-a-lifetime partnerships.

I am so confused by myself right now.

Automata is everything I love in stories - anachronism, noir visuals, social commentary, detective work, and robots. And yet...

And yet...

I REALLY want to see how Lookouts turns out. Even more so than Automata. There's something incredibly endearing about the concept that makes me want to what happens to those kids. I guess in a way I feel like I've already read Automata, whereas Lookouts is something fascinating and new.

Ideally, of course, I hope they do something with all of these concepts some time or another, but as Tycho says, they're busier than a paraplegic in an ass-kicking contest, so I don't know when that would be.

The key being that while their material comes from video-games they don't let it overwhelm good comedic timing. When they play outside the 3 panel structure it's breathtaking.

I say this with all due respect to the man, but these guys are the rightful heirs to Bill Waterson. Those Paint the Line comics that they did were so perfect. They brutally resist continuity most of the time (in contrast with most other webcomics which start off gag-a-day and then experience the Cerebus Syndrome) yet whenever they dip their toes in it they seem to get overwhelmingly positive responses. I'm rooting for Lookouts, myself.
Don't get me wrong, Jim Darkmagic is hilarious, but Lookouts seems like something Jerry will be exceedingly good at while challenging both their skill. Also, it's them trying something a little bit new but still familiar to some degree. I'd LOVE to see Automata AND Jim Darkmagic done at some point, but Lookouts is currently the most compelling of the three.

If I were to rate them, I'd go Lookouts, Automata and Jim Darkmagic.

Jim Darkmagic feels like an extension of the style in which they operate already. Not to say that that's not super funny or doesn't look great, but it's not pushing their boundaries. That said, Scott Kurtz from PvP has a new strip up in which his character from the D&D podcasts, Binwin Bronzebottom, is featured. His newspost said he'd be excited to do crossovers and such, fleshing out the world of Acquisitions Incorporated.

I really want to see more from "Lookouts," personally. I was a Boy Scout myself, so that might influence my vote, but that world seems so rich and satisfying. And that's coming from a guy who doesn't much like fantasy most of the time.

I agree with the comment about PA being evidence of "draw every day" in practice - so, so true. Looking back at their first strips compared to what they're doing today - it's really inspiring. I am certain many, many artists and comics teams go through this kind of evolution, but I've never seen it so clearly documented.

Listening to their podcasts has also been really illustrative of their comedy writing process - how the funny evolves, when it's a daily job.

Lookouts has my heart - the art and writing are just stellar. The expressions and personalities of the boys are really sophisticated. But I want the story of Automata - and so it looks to be, based on the votes. I also badly want a Twisp and Catsby book...

Jim Darkmagic (of the New Hampshire Darkmagics) is Gabe's D&D character. He, Scott Kurtz of PvP, and Wil Wheaton podcasted a couple of gaming sessions for Wizards of the Coast and have started to work their characters into comics sometimes. I expect we'll be seeing more of them regardless of this contest.

The podcasts are actually pretty good, in a tabletop gaming geek sort of way. My inner 14 year old was highly entertained.

An update on Lookouts and Automata.

Relevant quote:

Many people wanted to know who won in the contest between Lookouts and Automata, and in the end, it was much too close - and evidence of scripting on both sides made us even more wary. So, both comics won, after a fashion. But making that actually happen took some doing.

Gabriel and I will create and run Automata, which will be "broadcast" during the San Diego Comic Con. Beginning Wednesday, and I do mean this very Wednesday, Lookouts will begin its run - completing the story set forth in the pitch, and created by friends of Penny Arcade Becky Dreistadt and Oliver Grigsby. This way everybody wins, and nobody loses, and then shortly thereafter everybody wins again.

Best of both worlds, it seems. I'm not really familiar with either of the people now "running" Lookouts, anyone else have input on them? A quick scan of their homepages reveals that Grigsby is a writer on Heroes (A show I never could get into), and Dreistadt's art certainly seems a fine fit for the comic...

I am very happy that Gabe and Tycho will be focusing on Automata, though. Cannot. Wait.
