    So, the newest build of Opera just hit this morning and brought with it the capability of turning it (and your computer) into a little web server, allowing you to share photos, chat, post notes, stream music, share files, and host an HTML site (sorry PHP, etc), all with a dead simple configuration process that is little more than a quick Opera account sign-up (totally free), turning it on and pointing it at the folder of your choice. No FTP, no figuring out hosting packages or capabilities, just turn it on and go. It just works. I had the dumping grounds for my photos (the good, the bad, and the ugly) online in under a minute, and others were able to get at it with zero delay. And this is just to start, the framework is something extensible, so we're going to see even more capabilities popping up in the future.

    This came too late in my day to be able to fully think through all the implications/possibilities, but it immediately feels like a game changer (even if MS/Mozilla end up dominating with their own implementation of it). Sure, I recognize there's limits to it, but this is still a very slick little piece of work that I'm eager to put to the test- to that end, feel free to hammer the photos, music, and other bits for at least the next 8 hours.

    Read about this on Engadget. Definitely interesting. I'd be using it right now if it wasn't for the fact that it didn't want to read my old preferences and bookmarks when I installed it on my mac. Stupid thing.

    I might care if every Mac I’ve bought in the last six years hadn’t come with Apache built-in and ready to enable by checking a box. Further, running a web server from your desktop computer if you can’t configure something more complex than Opera is probably not a good idea to begin with—we’re going to end up with more damned zombie boxes on the next because the technically inept drop their firewalls to run this. Running your own server isn’t so great now that many desktop users have switched to laptops. And it sucks from an environmental perspective—dozens of people sharing a server with a hosting provider uses a lot less energy. Seems like bloat from programmers trying to think up a new feature to sell their apps.

    I work as a "computer guy", and this sort of thing wakes me up at night with the cold shudders. *NOT* the notion that any guy on the Internet suddenly has a publishing platform - I would welcome that in a hot second if it were properly designed and implemented. But the thought of everyone at home - yes, including all of YOU guys* -opening up Port 80, the Universal Pwnage Port, to the Internet, and advertising it? That wakes me up at 3 a.m. in a cold sweat.

    Although it really shouldn't - this kind of thing actually winds up paying my salary. I mean, don't get me wrong - I appreciate all of the business. But I do get a little tired of having my whole day taken up with malware removal. If you check around with your geek friend, I believe 9 out of 10 of them would recommend hosting your shit off-site. If you really want to serve up your pics and music to peers, use Orb.

    Actually, I am perfectly able to export my bookmarks from Opera 9 and getting them into Opera 10, it just wouldn't do it automagically, which is what Opera normally does. As such, I couldn't be bothered doing it manually and preferred to rather roll back until I could be bothered. Thanks for the down-your-nose attitude, though. Much appreciated.

    FWIW, that wasn’t directed at you, it was directed at the irresponsible people at Opera who think it would be great if anyone with a Windows machine could fire up a webserver without much forethought.

    ON TOPIC: Reminds me of the idea of a ghostnet-- a gnutella style file sharing net among a limited peer group, with members being on or off as they wished.
