Content-wise, I found the line art layer being set to multiply as the most interesting bit. I've always had a problem with my own coloring looking a little to cartoon-y, so maybe that's another step along the way. Really, between you and Sizer, I've learned more about coloring than in half a dozen "how-to" books. Now I just need to practice it. And maybe learn anatomy and perspective properly...

My weekend? My parents are coming down to visit. It'll be the first time we've seen them since we moved to Indiana in December. They're bringing my daughter with them. (She was spending most of June with my in-laws.) I'm still not sure how to explain being unemployed to them. "I've written some stuff that I might actually be able to publish" doesn't really seem to jive with people who thought I'd be mission control of a NASA mission one day.

It's nice to see and read about all the methods and techniques used to make it all happen, and that''s an impressive array to be sure. I've talked to some artists who are so insanely purist they wouldn't even dream of dropping their work into Photoshop to modify it in any way, and I always hope there's a few of those people keeping steadfast to their belief and work, as completely hands on is an art unto itself.

I will continue to argue that tools are tools though, and Paul's work definitely shows what kind of beauty can come from using them. Anyhow, said friend recently did an aesthetic punch out between FREAKANGELS and Katsuhiro Otomo's AKIRA. In his view, Ellis and Duffield beat Otomo easily. The psychic kids in AKIRA weren't used effectively and the ending had a "that's it" feel to it. By contrast, he loved Duffield's artwork and felt Ellis was definitely not afraid to show what would really happen if the psychic kids had the power to change the world.

I guess the FAs are a pretty big part of your life now; can you ever imagine not drawing the comic?

When I wrote a webcomic, I remember my delightful illustrator used to occasionally moan about the hours, especially when I'd write something like 'Interior, dark dusty basement, with shafts of light playing delicately across numerous wine racks', or 'huge monster destroying city' - I'd just get a murderous look and the inevitable cry of 'DO you have any IDEA, how long that will take?'

I really enjoyed this week's break, just thought I'd add that if you ever did a 'How to Draw A Freakangel' interlude, I'd be over the moon. Probably wouldn't be able to follow it; your style is way too technical for me! ]]>
