I just saw Southland Tales the other day. It was decent, a little overambitious but aspiring to the kind of surreal clusterfuck of an ensemble set of characters working separately to alter reality that reminds me of some Phillip K Dick and later-era Norman Spinrad. Also a pretty tight critique of American culture at this exact moment. Could have done without the politics for the most part (okay, Richard Kelly, I get it, you hate Republicans. But Democrats can be pretty stupid too), but all in all pretty enjoyable. Has anyone else seen this who liked it?

After the thrashing it got at Cannes a couple years ago, I'm expecting a train wreck. But, then again, who doesn't like watching a train wreck? -

never trust a cannes uproar, uptight self importance is of the utmost concern there....and this movie is not that. its almost like a 1986 era frank miller epic. -

WOW!! Best review/synopsis, for this movie, I've seen!!
I thought that the movie was ok. Richard Kelly seems like he's the fanboy that's getting to put his half-brained ideas into execution. Seann William Scott was really my favorite role(s)/subplot in the movie. Also the Timberlake story was pretty cool - is it bad that I like the actor Justing Timberlake?I did like how The Rock's whole storyline was pretty much the red herring of the film...at least from what I took of it.
And never would I have imagined a movie outside of the 80's with a cast like this movie!!! It was the Cannonball Run of sci-fi. (take that entirely as you will) -

Yeah, he and Kevin Smith were made up pretty well. Smith, moreso. I mean, Timberlake still sings...so, that was kind of a giveaway.

I actually love the casting for this movie. It's just so fucking ballsy, he chose to follow up his beloved underground cult flick with some ridiculous apocalyptic thing with a cast that includes The Rock, Buffy, one of the lynchpins of "Dude, Where's My Car", a pop star and his producer. I can't wait to see it. I don't think I'll get a chance for a while though.
Did anyone read the comic book preludes? I picked up the first two, but I didn't see the third one anywhere. -

I found it incredibly entertaining, largely because of its absolute absurdity. It definitely was a pretty severe victim of kitchen-sink syndrome - most of the movie came off as "Oh, man, wouldn't it be awesome/hilarious if...", but they just seemed to be enjoying it so much that it was hard to not have fun watching it. The whole thing felt like a ridiculous conspiracy theory - just sensible enough to follow, but still so over the top as to not make you worry that the absurdities are meant to be taken seriously. Definitely not an easy line to walk, and I imagine that if I'd seen it expecting anything other than a surreal and ridiculous experience I might have found it infuriating, but it definitely succeeded at amusing me.

It's definitely ballsy. I'd be more impressed if any of them could act their way out of a wet paper bag, though. -
I loves me some Darko, so I've been really looking forward to this flick. Anyone know when it comes out on DVD?

I will always trust a Cannes uproar. In my mind, Cannes is the most important thing in determining if I should give a damn about a particular movie. I'm just that kind of pretentious jackass, I guess. -

If you're talking about the totally awesome and equally superfluous musical section, that's actually the Killers with Timberlake lip synching. Which is actually my favorite part of the movie. If you're able to enjoy the previous lunacy, it seems like the musical number should be the most enjoyable section, even if it drops some Lebowski (though quite possibly by chance or only in my own head).

I work for a lot of film festivals - Cannes is something I may work this year - and can say that typically what comes out of popular opinion, which plays into critical opinion more than is generally assumed, is not to be trusted. There are a whole lot of people who seem to walk out of movies hating anything less than wonderful and an equal number of people seeing mediocre movies but calling them brilliant because they're at a film festival. -

Just saw this film the other day and loved it. Generally agree with the Voice review. Wondered what other WCers thought of it. My first impressions were that the film was extremely fun, gutsy, silly and ambitious, but certain sequences seemed to bite David Lynch awfully hard.
Screw the Cannes, I predict this will have a very long tail. -

I sometimes think that's what happens at Sundance. -
I'm fairly certain I read in Empire (UK film magazine) that the version that eventually got released had been substantially changed from the version that was slated at the film festival, and was far tighter and more coherent.

I'm freakin' obsessed with this movie right now. just watched it for the third time. i think Kelly's maybe invented a new grammar for film.
totally second the long tail comment, people will be studying this film in media-studies classes for years to come.
Kelly's a genius and/or is beta-testing some genuine cognitive enhancement drugs (and if so - want!) -

I liked it for the most part, although I found that you needed to have read the comics to follow the story, they were the 1st half of it.most of the casting was good, though every time the rock did his little kid hand thing to show he was crazy i wanted to smack him.
