    A new flu vaccine targets a highly conse3rved part of the viral genome - meaning that people won't need annual jabs and that it should give protection against any new pandemic.

    It's passed its initial safety and effectiveness tests and now goes to larger Type II tests.

    With luck this'll be on the market in a couple of years.

    A universal flu vaccine would be fantastic. for starters you could probably innoculate the whole population not just the elderly and babies.

    But it could be even better news more generally - the same technique could work on other types of viruses.

    I think what's happening is that it's taken until now to actually start making sense of the massive amount of data coming from the big gene sequencing projects of the last few years.
