There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character. Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

    --

Now, this is the Nedor comics character from 1940, not the famous pulp sf character. There are one or two pictures of this guy online, but I choose not to show them to you. Instead, revel in the description:

Scientist Andrew Bryant was experimenting with gamma and infrared rays and discovered that, by crossing them, he gained superpowers. He uses these abilities to fight crime with the help of his girlfriend, Detective Grace Adams (of the Agatha Detective Agency). Captain Future can fly, hurl energy bolts from his hands, and has super strength. But strong blows to the head can render him unconscious, and he must frequently use his machine to recharge his powers.

    I like that last bit.

    --

Your task, as ever, is to re-invent that into something a 21st Century audience could enjoy.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread. No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

    You have one week. Go.

Strong blows to the head can render ANYONE unconscious... I'm trying to imagine that thought process for his one great weakness. "I know... He'll get hit on the head a lot. Falling rocks, falling logs, tiny alien spaceships, crumbling buildings; NOTHING will be to obscure to knock out Capt. Future!"

    Fair enough.

Also, couldn't resist looking up a pic; aside from all the weird 70's anime pictures that came up, apparently Future just looks like a gayer Doc Samson (from the Hulk...), if such a thing is possible.

Ah, a shame that the sf character is not meant here; I grew up with that show :)

Googling for inspiration, I found his rather unfortunate costume and the following description:

"Joining the good captain is his girlfriend Grace Adams of the Agatha Detective Agency, from whom CAPTAIN FUTURE gets most of his crime-fighting leads."

So between that, and his hero name:

    Captain Future 1 by Oxbrow

    Captain Future 2 by Oxbrow

Oxbrow; the energy drink hero... would make sense he'd call himself something akin to 'Captain Future.' Genius.
  5.  (6493.9)
I think you're thinking of Captain X-TREME Future... Captain America should re-brand himself as an energy drink called CAP!!!: So potent it'll wake the dead!

    Hmmmm...
This is going to be a bit of a squeaker time-wise for me this week; getting a bunch of freelance out of the way AND prepping for Chicago Comic-Con may preclude me from dropping any REMAKE science this time around. We'll see...
    Good ideas so far.

@Jackcrowder: Looks like it belongs in some classy cafe somewhere... like all your work. Very cool

Man I missed the thread last week... after my first hack at it, I got caught up with work. This week I'm hoping to put in a solid effort. As usual from me... here's a little something while my brain continues to chew on this weeks idea.

Aside from lasers and super strength... I'd like to think that Captain Future relies a lot on his technological advances. Which he creates and comprehends through his enhanced intellect.

@ pauljholden; I'm in love with the dialogue that accompanies. I'm also really digging the lines along the arms. Very fun work!

@ zombieinzen; If my work belongs in a classy cafe, then yours belongs in an Ibiza rave. The tech gear brings 'Future' to the front. I can even visualize the Day Glo hand-blasts coming from that blue smoking right hand. Some really fun stuff at play there, sir.

Yes, well... sorry in advance for the gamma-penis...
    Photobucket
Ballpoint pen drawing scanned and colored. If you can't tell, he saying "Don't bump my head." Also, kept the original costume, because I thought it was funny, and didn't put much actual thought into any of the gamma or infrared stuff...

Ough, my contribution is bad ... too many ideas and not a single visual clue ... but look for the cameo.

There are some great ideas so far. I particularly like jackcrowder, zombieinzen and pauljholden's entries.

I altered Captain Future's powers a bit, making him more all-powerful...
