Anyway here are some band from the local Metal scene here....

Solstafir - Post metal band.

Plastic gods - Doom/Sludge metal. Know the bass player very well. Very popular with the metal scene here

severed crotch - Probably the best death metal band in Iceland at the moment. And i also know the bass player here very well also!

Swords of chaos - screamo Hardcore punk. Seen as the local next big thing...

and last but not least Myra who are my mates band. Only do 3 shows a year, but they do a very nice line in alternative metal (i.e. - very quiet to start, builds to shattering noise)

Kylesa's last album (Static Tensions) is one of the only "metal" albums I've bought in years. It is just great.

If we're coutning The Blood Brothers in this area (I disagree, but whatever) then I recomend An Albatross, especially Blessphmy, though Family Album has The Electric Proletariat Rides a Velvet Chariot, which is made of awesome *ahem* rawk!

Moletopopolis by Deathmøle (QC creater Jeph Jaques ficitional band) is pretty cool. Metal instrumentals about unicorns.

I have to second WITTR's Diadem. I actually like it better than their later stuff (though I've been told by the boy that's because it's more accessible...)

Once they are done recording, I'm absolutely going to have to plug a friend's new EP on here. They cite Gorguts, Death, Cynic, Morbid Angel, Edge of Sanity, Suffocation, and Misery Index as influences (among others, of course) and are going to be playing a show with Criminal Element in September.

Also, local Philly band Lethean is pretty damn talented.

Yeah, I missed Mayhem here, too. I didn't feel so bad, though, because it wasn't a general admission venue. It was one of those old dinosaur venues where the pavilion near the stage is basically rich-ass VIPs and they don't allow pits at all. So anyone who actually wanted to see Slayer would have to pay for lawn seats and just stand there. That would have been a pretty depressing way to see Slayer. I want to get in there and get crazy.

As for Goatwhore, I agree about Falgoust. When I saw them just after Funeral Dirge came out, this sketchy looking long haired dude was working their merch table. I bought a shirt and he turned out to be a really nice guy who chatted with me for a bit. Then, of course, he got up on stage and took the mic. At the time I didn't really know what Falgoust looked like so I was standing there for fifteen minutes chatting with him and had no idea he was the lead singer. Sammy Duet was pretty cool as well, but I recognized him from Acid Bath, so there was no surprises there.

Made Out of Babies and Battle of Mice are actually both the same vocalist, Julie Christmas. She's really fucking good. I know Circle Takes the Square also has a female vocalist. I dunno how much she sings often, but they do group vocals that are pretty neat too.

CIRCLE TAKES THE SQUARE is fucking amazing. especially because they pull it off live 100%, no matter how out of hand the show is. ive seen them do it with people getting thrown into their drums. in the same vein, i highly recommend THE ASSISTANT. epic hardcore/metal/violence. beuatiful into crushing in a split second.

also, my beloved HATRED SURGE is split male/female vocals. DESPISE YOU has some, and so does ANCIENT CHINESE SECRET.

Brand spanking new EP from a friend's band

So the above EP was recorded by a friend's band and mixed by a different friend who is in the music industry program at Drexel, and it's pretty fucking awesome. My recommendation for a first listen is "God's Parabola" but really, the whole thing is really awesome. They're incredibly tight and disgustingly talented musicians. The band, named Pyrrhon, finished recording this on Wednesday. Uh, it's really intense. I highly recommend it, and would be really interested in hearing what people think of it. I'm kind of a dilettante when it comes to metal so I don't really have a frame of reference other than "WOAH I CAN TELL THAT THIS IS REALLY GOOD BUT CANNOT EXPLAIN WHY I KNOW THAT." That and I've been told it's death metal.

Arson Anthem is a Southern Hardcore punk project whose lineup is as follows: Mike Williams (vocals; Eyehategod), Phil Anselmo (guitar; Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual), Hank Williams III (drums; solo, Assjack, Superjoint Ritual), and Collin Yeo (bass guitar).

Sort of a more balls out version of Superjoint. I'm kind of weirded out about Phil with short hair now.

Uhhh, the dude from Baroness who does the art for a ton of bands (including the new Kylesa album) is fucking AWESOME.

Saw Cable and Rosetta open for Giant Squid and Grayceon last night. IT WAS AMAZING. Also turns out that the guitarist in Rosetta was my TA from my freshman spring visual studies class. Random and also amazing.

Seriously, support the fuck out of the new Giant Squid album, it is INCREDIBLE, they are so talented, and every label that has ever picked them up has been in the process of going under (which I was told may happen with their new label, which is really sad).

I feel that I should like the new Giant Squid more but something about the vocals seems off. Rosetta on the other hand are spectacualr. Saw them in Sydney in a tiny little university venue last year. Exceptional show, very friendly guys too. I still have Wake/Lift on heavy rotation. Can't wait for their next release.

On the topic of Rosetta I wholeheartedly recommend Zodiak. A Philly supergroup of sorts with Mike Armine from Rosetta and one of the guys from Balboa.

So excited to hear Baroness are coming here for Soundwave. New album in in October too. The cover's gorgeous as always. Love me some John Paizley art.

Alright, so I'm gonna toss something out there and hopefully it sticks - Mission : Metal.

So, on my way into work today I was listening to "Bloody Roots" (Ian Christie's weekly radio show covering a different facet of the metal landscape) and he mentioned a term I hadn't heard before - "rethrash". He was speaking not of the New Wave of American Thrash Metal (Shadows Fall, Lamb of God,) but what could be termed the "Third Wave", brand new music in the vein of Nuclear Assault, Destruction, etc. All bands I've heard of, but a new term to me.

So, your mission is thus - RETHRASH

I've always loved that raw energy that I've always associated with bands like these.

I think that's my favorite thing about thrash. There's a wild abandon there that no other form of metal has been able to replicate (with the possible exception of grindcore.) It's a great genre, unfortunately for a long time there were really only 6 or 7 solid thrash bands.

Got a bit quiet here for a few days.

I was wondering what any of the folks haunting this thread thought of bands like Sunn O))), Boris, etc as well as the whole drone metal genre.

My friends and I have made jokes about making Sunn O))) ringtones (and having to carry around a special sub-woofer and such for it) but I do genuinely enjoy some of this music when I'm in the mood for it. (I find it easier to listen to music w/o understandable lyrics when I'm working or doing something that requires focus.)

My friends and I constantly make jokes about Sunn O))) playing live: they'd just hit a note that would go "BUNGGGGGGGG" and drop their guitars and come back in five minutes to hit the next chord.

Drone metal, ehhhh, I can get into some of it, but the Boris I like the best is the faster stuff. When I saw them they played mostly droney stuff and it got old pretty fast.

I dig Sunn 0))) if I'm in the mood, especially Black 1, and I like some of the Earth stuff, but mostly I ignore drone metal. I like metal for the viciousness even more than the volume, and drone seems to suck all the danger out of metal, leaving only a vague menace and eardrum injury.

I'll definately give the details. I have to admit, that I'm feeling a Rodamus Prime start to manifest itself in my pants for this show. Especially since it's on halloween.

@ joe.distort: we've all made our mistakes in the past. I once went to an ICP show. I was young, stupid, and drunk so it seemed okay at the time. As far as paying the extra price, I have no problem giving these guys my money. Brendan Small has always delivered in his shows, especially with the School of Rock Allstars, and Mastadon is just something that has to be experienced. This just means that I have to sacrafice one or two of the weekend benders I'm so fond of. It's a small price to pay for what I'm sure will be a night not soon forgotten.

@varuker i'm on oahu and we get a decent show maybe 3 or 4 times a year and it's usually not metal, hawai'i's always had this weird scene cycle because all the kids in bands either move away to college or they're in the military and their term is up. so every 5 years it dies and resurrects itself so the mainland bands that come here kind of stop and restart. in the late 90's it was all old school hardcore types of bands like gorilla biscuits, agnostic front, madball type stuff, which was the entire scene. and then around 2000 the scene died and got real poppy and punky, which caused a reaction that strangely spawned a bunch of death metal and grindcore bands (a few of which i was a part of). around 03-04 all that kind of crashed as everyone left, including me and now that i'm back there's a really serious and thriving hardcore scene again. granted it's more the metalcore dun-dun-dun-weeeeee breakdown-core stuff but i can dig it, and it's nice to see people giving a fuck about music here.

the nice thing about the hardcore kids and their mentality is that they're so concerned with repping the scene and giving a fuck that they try really hard to use their money to bring down bands, so the past few years we've seen bands here we never thought would come down, hatebreed, hope conspiracy, bad brains, terror, madball etc etc. and it's all because of them. it's a weird place as far as a music scene goes and mainland band shows here but i hope the hardcore scene sustains itself a bit longer than the previous ones did.

Some other stuff I was listening to today:

Negura Bunget Romanian folk/Black Metal. "Om" was one the best albums in 06/07, definitely head and shoulders above a lot the cliched BM doing the rounds these days.

VHK/Galloping Coroners Tribal/Psychedelic Hungarian shaman hun rock! I picked up their album Dancing With The Sun a few years ago at a Neurosis show. Their back story is pretty interesting. Easiest album to get is said album available on Neurot recordings.

Oxbow Not exactly metal, but still I love this band and am finally seeing them just before my birthday. The Love That's Last compilation comes with the documentary DVD music for adults which is brilliant.

We played with/hung out with some pretty rad bands on the road.

the Atlas Moth (Chicago)

Also, we played with a band in Pittsburgh called "Bearskull" which was comprised of three dudes with microphones, one of whom played the drums and it basically amounted to three guys screaming their brains out while the one guy also played drums. They introduced one of their songs like this: "*Huff* One time *Puff* there was this *huff* this guy *puff* Whothoughthewasawolfthissongisaboutthat" (13 seconds of screaming/cymbals) End. I wasn't really into it at the beginning, but the more I think about it, the more I really like Bearskull.

Oh yeah, love Oceansize. Effloresce is pretty much amazing from start to finish, Music for a Nurse is beautiful and their cover of Walking In The Air brings me to climax every time I hear it. I didn't even realise that Kong were an Oceansize side-project until fairly recently. Now I love them even more.

Oh, while I'm posting again, Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye is probably my favourite ever 'metal' (is it metal? I honestly don't know) album. It is a work of insanity.

I love "tuning in" to this thread.
I keep finding great new (to me) bands and while I don't like everything I'm hearing, I'm enjoying the ride.

Kong and Oceanside are both new to me. I concur with newspaperdrone, they do inspire baby-smashing. I can still feel the thump of that track behind my eyes. I'm gonna need more of that in the near future.

@ginja - Korpiklaani sound like gypsy polka metal or something. Fun stuff!

Here's the thing about Christian metal. Some of it is actually pretty fucking awesome. Norma Jean's first record (which owed a lot to The Chariot's Josh Scogin on vox) is one of the heaviest records I've ever heard. That said, everything after that record has been basically a shitty copy of said album. Bum outs. But I still spin that first NJ record from time to time. Brutal shit.

Also I have a soft spot in my heart for Beloved, another Solid-State Records band which is infinitely poppier than probably anything else mentioned on this post, but still manages to insert some pretty heavy riffs into their songs. And you can't really tell that they're singing about Jesus and shit.

@sacredchao It depends on if you want more extended, less harsh, almost post rock stuff, or something more recognizably metal. Basically the later in their career you get, the more post-rock-ish everything is. (I'll admit to not having heard anything from later than The Absence of Truth, and not much of that, so I could be wrong, but that's what I've read.)

Personally I have The Red Sea (very early in their discography and pretty harsh), Oceanic, and Panopticon (almost post rock, not that that's necessarily bad). My favorite of the three is Oceanic, which strikes a balance between the two. It's where I'd start, and depending on what you like about it, you know whether to go forward or backward in their discography.

@joe.distort - The sad part is that so many of them are actually talented, but more interested in looking cool and making the scene than being good. Which, I suppose, goes for pretty much any genre. I usually ignore bands that spend more time flinging their guitars around than actually playing them.

I suppose this makes me old and curmudgeonly in my metal aesthetics. "When I was a kid, our metal bands just banged their heads and played really fast! Uphill! Both ways!"

I appreciate Iwrestledabearonce, but it's hard for me to feel like there's anything apart from tongue-in-cheek pop culture references going on behind all that crazy music. A band like Unexpect offers all the weirdness, but sells it in such a way as to leave the possibility that it's about something.

Which is not to say I've actually read any lyrics by Iwrestledabearonce, but I'd say their band name, song names, and slogan ("Putting the gay back into metal," or something along those lines) have justifiably led me to that conclusion.

@sleestak: You're welcome. Have to confess, they're actually some old friends of mine, so I'm always a bit supportive ... but I really think their music is "old fashioned in a good kind of way". If there's any musical style I can appreciate when it's "nothing you haven't heard many times, but very well done" it's actually Thrash Metal and nearby relative stuff.

My two cents on Iwrestledabearonce: I think it's kind of funny, but I can't really listen to it. First of all: It isn't THAT special or even "avant-garde". (Just feels like mixing up Horse the Band with Walls of Jericho, combined with the colourful trash-cultural but actual content-lacking attitude of current indie youngsters) Plus: I can't stand those ultra-heavy Metalcore Mosh Breakdowns and poses anymore. Yeah, a friend of mine has attended the show in NYC, Melvins were labeled as "very special guest" or something like that.
Kind of off topic, but I know a guy who back then has been on the road with them for a few days, because he booked them an extra-gig in a small club at a small town inbetween shows at two big cities (I think Cologne was among them), to avoid a day off. At that small gig in a boring villiage something like three people showed up, so the Melvins went on stage just wearing underpants playing Classic Rock Coversongs for two hours ... awesome story. Interesting sidenote he told me is, that even the two big shows must have been totally different from each other, with one being very brutal and heavy and the other one more laid back and athmospheric ...

I think it's nice to have bands that don't take themselves too seriously- Look at Strapping Young Lad, Zimmer's Hole, Dethklok, (Admittedly, 2/3 of those bands are Devin Townshend fronted, but still). Two of those bands make money by simultaneously paying homage to and poking fun at metal culture. (And Yes, If Dethklok has Mike Keneally and Gene Hoglan, i consider them a band, not just a cartoon.) But i think it's necessary to have what are essentially the 'Jon Stewarts' of the metal scene- Bands that become so good at parodying their source material that they get recognized as their source material. Someone would be hard pressed to convince me that Strapping Young Lad has no merit in metal.

As to Iwrestledabearonce- i mainly like it because it's chaotic. I get tired of thundering double bass and palm muted riffs for 5 minutes straight every once in a while, and would like something punctuated by a Dixie horn and dream sequence audio effects- They just happen to be my flavor of choice lately when I look for that. Chaotic enough to sate my craving for something different but light enough to where i don't feel like I'm listening to Beneath The Massacre.

One thought on that: I realy dig Devin, being a Drummer rmyself I'm a huge Fan of Gene Hoglan and I think of "City" (plus some additonal material from that era) is an mportant and totally awesome classic, but if it comes to the younger albums of SYL, they seem to lack some actual creativity. City was ahead of it's time, but nower days it's just straight forward "Modern Metal" between traditonal Thrash und a gigantic Industrial-Sound. After City, they never did an album which convinced me as a whole. A few good songs here, some small interesting ideas there - but than again, just your typical "thrsh riff / double bass" stuff in conventional songstructures, while It COULD be more than that ...

But anyway, Bands like Iwrestledabearonce and Horse the Band kind of remind me of some "crossover" stuff which was fun back in the 90ies, like finnish WALTARI, who sometimes used to mix up really heavy Metal Guitars with Techno and Dance elements plus adding an extra-cheesy pop chorus ....

... while sometimes even going into ironic takes on brutal metal with growls and screams:

I loved 'em back then, nowerdays it' seems even more almost that bit too silly than 10 years ago ...

I've seen Strapping twice and I'm hoping Dev comes this way on the DTB-thing for Ki/Addicted. I don't have any of his solo stuff except for Accelerated Evolution (which is, according to most fans, some of his poorest work), so I could come into it with fresh ears. And earplugs, because I permanently knocked out some of my upper-mids at the first show. As far as SYL work, I think Alien is close to City, but not as fresh.

What I find amusing is when "joke" bands are suddenly regarded as "real" metal, like SYL or Dethklok or what-have-you. It just makes me wonder why people get so fucking uptight about genre and shit.

I hadn't heard SYL since I worked at a record shop about four years ago or so, so I went over to YouTube for a refresher. I've never seen better evidence for higher bitrates than the Almost Again video. The wall of sound recording technique he uses completely obliterates the 128k (or whatever) compression youtube uses. It clips and distorts all over the place and the cymbals sound warbly and thin. Just kind of interesting, in my opinion.

Have you heard about/seen their Porn clip for the song "Pussy"? And I actually mean porn clip, they did a video (or at least an uncensored version besides a clean one) with actual Hardcore porn scenes, which was hosted on some porn websites. I heard it was only available in Germany, so I wonder if anybody else here may have seen it ...
... the song musically and lyrically is total crap though, really poor collection of stupid clichés and bad rhymes and not even funny. The only good (even though silly) sentence in it, which really made me laugh is "Blitzkrieg mit dem Fleischgewehr".

Yes, I've seen the clip for Rammstein. My comments are elsewhere on these forums, but I don't think it did the band any good. And unless the tagline for their next album is "Less Enlish, More Fire," I'm probably calling them done. Rosenrot had a few good songs, but was ultimately a disappointment after Reise, Reise. The new album is just... bad. I mean, there are a few good songs on it, but overall it's pretty terrible.

Well, just my own personal perspective of things, but don't mistake "taking the piss out of metal" with actualy being a metal band, but a musically modern/progressive/idiosyncratic one with an attitude that involves humor and irony. That's at least the way I see it. May possibly be the same thing to you ...
Same with Zimmers Hole, they're one of those parodies, that's even a loveletter to the genre.

Yes, I've seen the clip for Rammstein. My comments are elsewhere on these forums, but I don't think it did the band any good. And unless the tagline for their next album is "Less Enlish, More Fire," I'm probably calling them done. Rosenrot had a few good songs, but was ultimately a disappointment after Reise, Reise. The new album is just... bad. I mean, there are a few good songs on it, but overall it's pretty terrible.

Well, I'll try to keep this as short as possible, but I think it may partly be an interesting inside: The first album came out the year I turned 18 and was the thing of the hour among my circles back then. Hanging around alot at alternative/metal clubs and stuff like that, there was already no way to get around them. 1-2 years later the second album with charting hitsingles and even success in the US* took place and the whole thing exploded to stadium level. Since then, like other hard bands singing in german, it became kind of a "people may label you white trash if you're into Rammstein" thing over here. Funnily enough, I think lots of people - fan or critic - don't even get their humor, while sometimes they don't even succeed in what they're trying to do. If it comes to me - I became in general very ambivalent about them. Sometimes songs are quite cool musically and lyrically (Mein Teil, Mann gegen Mann, Keine Lust...), sometimes I wish they would really bring it over a line, where it' would be a bit more gritty and obviously polemic, but they don't seem to succeed to consequently bring it to a good punchline (best exsample: "Amerika" - that song could have even more cynical - of course nothing against the US in general, I just like some good sarcasm) - but then again, that "subtiliy" is part of the concept, I guess. And then there's songs - especially during the younger past - that are lyrically so pointless to me, that I cannot stand them at all (Feuer Frei, Benzin, Sonne).
Pussy is actually their absolute lowpoint now. A big try to provoke and more than ever before get "scandalously" into the press, with a song that's total crap and a just bad coverversion of themself. German Metal Hammer by the way also quoted them to be angry at each other because the album didn't turn out good ...
Whew, lots of text, I hope someone's really interested in my opinion, haha. Damn you, time wasting internet.
*(one thing, I have to get off my chest: What a stupid idea to do an english language version of "Du hast" for that market, which they did in '97. The song is built upon a wordplay you cannot translate well ...)

One thing, that's totally off topic: I just heard, that Helge Schneider has arrived in the US and people know/like him over there - is that really true?

@ filthy ring - The irony about it: Sure, there will always be retarded Metalheads living in the past, that only want to see the Belladonna Line Up playing Among the Living tracks. But with Bush, they'd already built up a whole new identity. It's not like the Maiden/Dickinson, Priest/Halford, Sabbath/Ozzy, Kiss with Make Up kind of thing. "Bushthrax" is a great original Band doin' great music that has always been quite ahead of many other metal bands. They've never been that successfull than the other trhee of the "big four of speed/thrash, Metallica, Slayer & Megadeth" - but they were always musically more creative than those bands during the last 15 years. But the fact that their pals from Metallica and Slayer play the real big arena, while they ended up doin' the smaller venues themself seems to be something Ian never got over. He once was one of the most iconic and beloved guys in the scene. Now people start to roll they're eyes oer him, because he's ridicolous. And that's the sad thing.

Next topic. Have been listening alot to the SHRINEBUILDER album lately. A project of Saint Vitus' Wino, Neurosis' Scott Kelly, Melvins' Dale and the guy from OM and Sleep. It's no masterpiece, but a pretty good Doom Metal record.

Thing about Slayer is that they don't really have any surprises anymore. They're like the AC/DC of thrash: you know exactly what you're getting when you get the album.

That said, when they first offered the album for streaming from their website (or wherever it was) I knew it sounded familiar, past being a Slayer album. And it's because it was engineered and mixed by Greg Feldman, the guy responsible for the sonic abortion that is Metallica's Death Magnetic. The snare is entirely too hot, the vocals are too far up in the mix, and the guitars (sort of what Slayer's famous for) are buried under the hihats, especially on the faster songs. I'm pretty much at the point now that I won't go near a record that Feldman is credited on. I've heard stuff that were literally done in bedrooms that sound better than the garbage this guy puts out. I hope Rick Rubin's current love affair with him dies a horrible death.

I realize that I'm complaining about sound quality on a Slayer record, but this shit is getting annoying. If you can afford production that sounds good, why wouldn't you go for it, you know? This just sounds like an average demo tape, with slightly better sounding vocals.

ETA: The weird thing is that he's done a bunch of other things that I think sound really good, like both American Head Charge albums and Weezer's Pinkerton. I don't know when the guy decided to suddenly go to shit.

Yeah, that's a common complaint that I'm seeing about the new Slayer. Drums too high, guitars too low. It's also true that you know exactly what you're going to get with a new Slayer album, just like new AC/DC or Motorhead. Still, they're one of those bands where a mediocre album from them is still better than most other band's better stuff, and I feel like this one is stronger than mediocre. It'll keep me going for quite a while.

...and the new Rammsein album just went "on the index" on Germany. Which means, it's not allowed to display it public in shops anymore and will only be sold to adults who ask for it.
Reasons? The song about the austrian "Fritzel", a BDSM image in the booklet and ridiciously the song "Pussy", which in the eyes of the "Bundesprüfstelle für jugengefährdende Schriften" (eh... official institution for the decision of what's endangering the youth) is promoting unsafe sex.

In the 80ies, humourus German Punkrockers "Die Ärzte" were notorious for getting on the index with silly songs about incest and sodomy. At one point, they started to take the piss out of it and even incorporated this aspect about getting censored by the Bundesprüfstille into lyrics and videoclips. Of course, it just made 'em more successfull. They're stll playing the huge venues and headllining the big summrer open airs today ....
(Good guys, by the way. Their drummer once started a comics publishing company and was the fist to pull out Hellboy on the german market ... it failed, he was ahead of his time I guess...)

Shrinebuilder was....a tad disappointing, good but nothing more than the sum its parts.
Just got the new Pelican album, What We All Come To Need, and 16's Bridges To Burn. Along with the recent Gates of Slumber,The Accused and Tombs albums, Bridges to Burn is one of the better metal records I've heard this year. Since Youtube is down, can't post any tracks/videos but its definitely worth checking out if you dig that whole Unsane/Eyehategod sludge misanthropy.

just wanted to mention it briefly here, last halloween IRON LUNG, PIG HEART TRANSPLANT and WALLS did a collaborative live set involving like 7 people (PHT is one guy who is already in IL). the recording from the soundboard came out as a 12" called PUBLIC HUMILIATION and holy christ is this thing great. the art, the sound, the music and noisiness are all top notch and i highly recommend it to you fine folks. the vinyl i think already sold out, but there are digital files around of it.

I was a big FF back in the day as well, but as time went by, I began wishing they had a second guitar player to get something really interesting going. There's only so long that percussive guitar sounds interesting on its own. With SYL and FF, everything is tied to the drums, and while Gene Hoglan is a goddamn machine, I wish he'd do more work with more dynamic bands. The most interesting thing I've heard him play on recently is Dethklok. Then again, back in '05, I saw Gene play drums for Opeth live, and it was great to hear, but he almost seemed bored.

I'm also pretty much over clean vocals, but that's just me.

I sign that. But, not really sick of clean vocals, but sick of all sorts of "Disco-Metal/-Hardcore", which's main sceme seems to be to have fast verses with growls/sreams and choruses with clean lalala. There's some bands, where I like it (Opeth being a good example).

If it comes to Fear Factory - their first two albums were total killer (and eventhe fear is the mindkiller ep was something fresh back then), but then - the same routine over and over again, with some albums that were quite okay (Obsolote, Archetype), and some being just total crapy (Transgression -the lame Killing Joke Cover on it is a crime!) I'm done with it, not even iterested in hearing the new album, which came to life resulting from some shitty band business, just ignoring the other two guys ..

I own the Almighty Punchdrunk album "Music For Them Asses" with Gene drumming. It's a weird Hardcore/Extreme Metal mixture, a bit silly as well, but it has it's cool moments.

I've heard three of the new songs, this being one of them. So far it seems like an album I'd pick up. I like Mudvayne peripherally; they're a band I'm happy to listen to (especially the older, proggier stuff), but don't actively seek out. I love Chad Grey's voice, and I like the overall aesthetic of the band now that they've gotten past their super-gimmicky makeup/outfits and progressed to more subtle visual ideas. Anyway, I'm hoping this album is a return to their earlier prog/jazz/metal hybrid, rather than the slick radio stuff. So far it sounds like that may be the case.

I saw them live in Fargo during the End of All Things to Come tour, and talked with the bassist a bit--where I discovered we both went to the same Echobrain show at the Quest in Minneapolis (we were talking about Jason Newsted at the time, and the fact that I also met Mr. Newsted.)

Speaking of thrash, dates for Slayer/Megadeth/Testament are out. The closest they're getting to me is either Chicago or Detroit, so I might give this one a go. I saw Testament in Minneapolis and it was brutal. Bostaph and Lombardo on the same tour should be awesome. The only thing that worries me is Megadeth... all their live footage looks like the most boring show of all time. (OF ALL TIME!) Plus, I'm one of those Mustaine/Friedman/Ellofsen/Menza people. Any band without two of those four isn't Megadeth to me, even though Dave wrote/writes pretty much everything. We'll see how much tickets are, though. Might go despite my misgivings.

It portraits the local Metal Kids in the Altenessen dsitrict of the former coal mining city Essen in the poor Ruhr-Area back then. Accompanied with alot of old live footage by KREATOR (in the legendary Zeche Carl, were I used to be the DJ at a regular metal party for some time...), which, as we all know, is the band from that area and era that made it .... quite interesting stuff ...

Alastair: Not so sure about Addicted, not so sure about Project Ki (other than the song Quiet Riot) either...still think I prefer Ziltoid to these two but I know they'll grow on me eventually. Ocean Machine still remains my favorite of all his works.

@celan after talking to people in other towns and after the last show here, dethklok draws a ton of hot topic kids/ adult swim fans/people that do that horrible "run into each other and try to knock each other down" type mosh. some things are more important to me than money too, but paying $45 to see a show with the only band i like playing for 25 minutes is never going to happen. ive seen converge four times before, and all four combined still cost me less then that.

its really the dethklok thing that is pissing me off. evidently they are making HIGH ON FIRE start their sets before doors even open for general admission at some dates? sounds like a FUN tour to be on.

Actually, the crowd wasn't that bad, mostly because the kids that hit maybe one or no shows a year didn't know wtf to do. A lot of them just kinda stood there. You could tell "true" metal fans because they were actually getting into the show. Mastodon played Crack the Sky in it's entirety, with a full story based movie behind them-great show. There were of course the usual drunks and such yelling shit, but other than that not too bad.

Guess I can't comment on other dates but according to my ticket: Doors open at 5 and show starts at 5:30. It's a weekday show with 4 bands so that doesn't irk me necessarily. I'll be there at 5.

This will only be the second time I've seen Converge...I saw them 8 years ago at the (now defunct) Pound in S.F. on the Jane Doe tour...I think the other bands were American Nightmare and Murder City Devils.
Edit: That ticket was $10.

Reporting back about the Dethklok/Mastodon/Converge/High on Fire show.
All the bands were incredible to be sure. But I'm afraid I can only confirm joe.distort's misgivings expressed upthread.
There was definitely a core Converge-loving constituent. And Converge's more hardcore based aesthetic seemed out of place, which was odd since a crucial part of that aesthetic means connecting with the audience in a way that is not typical of your average metal band. I was extremely irritated to hear a zitty faced teen behind me screaming at them to get off the stage. But that's typical. The kids did not like Jacob Bannon's vocals: I saw some kids texting each other words to that effect. At least 10 people were tossed out during their set for "moshing"...though I don't mean to imply that some of those folks might have deserved it.
I would guess that maybe 15% of the crowd appeared to be there ONLY for Dethklok. Mastodon were the "co-headliners"...but certainly people seemed to get off especially on the Dethklok part of the show.
Let me go on the record to say that I think Brendon Small is an amazing talent (musician, comedy writer, voice actor) and Dethklok was not disappointing at all. [Guitar geek aside: His right hand work was completely insane.] That being said, the whole commercial tie-in aspect left a kind of bad taste in my mouth...there was a bit at the beginning with Dethklok and Brutal Legend and there were stations where you could play the game in the lobby. With the huge screen playing scenes from Metalocalypse behind the band, it felt weirdly more like watching TV with 500 strangers rather than a concert at that point.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but why would you go to the show at all? I mean, wouldn't you know ahead of time what you were getting into? Mastodon/Dethklok are headlining, so you have to know that the other bands would get shorter sets. Dethklok are "not a real band" in the same sense that Gorillaz are "not a real band," so you have to know there would be some amount of audiovisual stuff going on, if not a full-on cartoon. Furthermore, Mastodon and Dethklok require a larger (but still not enormous by any standard) venue to fit their fanbase, so it's obviously not going to be like a basement hardcore show. If that's what you're expecting, why go? There's nothing wrong with skipping a show because you don't like the venue or format...

As far as Dethklock being a "joke" band... last I checked they were still making metal. Whether or not they're serious is irrelevant to me. I listen to metal because I like the music, not because somebody is pretending to be an undead Viking warrior or yelling at God for making their middle-class life so shitty.

Malefice : Good-time mosh-pit anthemic nutterness. Great.

well, i'll start out with a couple of things that may be at the outside edge of metal here.

the jarboe album makahali is pretty fucking heavy, despite phil anselmo's shitty performance and her experimental leanings.
the diablo swing orchestra out of stockholm has a lot of progmetal sensibility, reminds me of sleepytime gorilla museum some, but with opera, jazz and cabaret leanings.
scott h biram's album dirty ol' one man band is some pretty fucking solid country/metal/blues with some raw, old school murder ballads. he's out of texas, got hit by an 18-wheeler awhile back, and now has more metal in him than his guitar does, which describes his music alright.

on a straightup metal tip:

cattle decapitation is pretty hard for a bunch of vegans.
storm of light has been mentioned, but i'm really digging what i've heard from them. they manage to sound like neurosis without coming off as a ripoff, which is pretty impressive.
satana kozel is a russian band doing what i guess they call finntroll viking metal, which is just entertaining.

Went and saw Dark Castle and Wolvhammer on Sunday night. Seriously angry people.

Dark Castle was pretty excellent, although a little gimmick-y (had their own stage lights, hot, tattooed chick guitar player, dude used 2 kick drums for his rack and floor toms).

Wolvhammer is probably one of my favorite bands from Minneapolis. They remind me of the sort of raw anger of Black Flag mixed with the riffs of Metallica. So bad ass.

Any thoughts on this "new wave of american black metal"? Involving Bands like Wolves in the Throne Room, Krallice, Nachtmystium, Liturgy, Cobald and so on, there really seems to be some movement of bands referring to the pure old Darkthrone sound, but with some kind of alternative (idogically) und experimental (musically) attitude. Seems a little bit like these bands are more recognized by fans of that whole Doom/Stoner/Sludge and Drone/Noise/Avantgarde thing and related scenes around rather than at the base of the actual extreme Metal scene. (Which may be a bigger phanomenon in Europe than in the US)

As a metal guy, I love his book's artwork but the comedy music leaves me very stale and disinterested, but I want to like it. right now i´m doing a review of these guys Ghost Aircraft. they´re a local band that has oný been on the go a couple of months.

Trying to put my finger on their sound. There is some heavy Machine gun riffing, slight emo-style hardcore, and a complete lack of screamed vocals. i thinking of comparisons but it must be sunday night cos i can´t seem to think of any. Any suggestions?

I do have the album (its more of an EP actually) and it´s not quite as bad as that. It´s not horrifically heavy but it does take bits of math and bog standard hardcore and tarts it up a bit (perhaps it´s one of those prison transvestites!). I actually rather like it. It´s a bit of light relief after listening to Goatwhore, Nile and Hatred Surge all fucking day...

Plus it´s probably the best of this genre of metal thats coming out of Iceland at the moment. There are a few other bands like this around but they aren´t as good as this...

i didn't think it sounded horrible, from the little i heard on their myspace page, that was just the first comparison that jumped to mind. in those two tracks i was hearing "white pony" era deftones with some folkish bits and some poppy bits that brought bands like arcade fire to mind. they are lighter than what i usually like for metal, but experimental and innovative enough that they're worth hearing.
maybe like a prison tranny having bad things done to it while having to prevent itself from screaming while kind of liking it all in a way. but i think i'm getting a bit too twisted in my metaphors here.
more often than not i like the stuff you post, by the by, and i want to be clear that i'm writing my take on the music, for what that's worth.

Well, no wonder. Total underground. Hobby band of some mid30ies guys, who just have to keep doing it, because they love doing it. It's the first official longplay album under that band name, but I've been on the road with the band some of the guys played in before in the good ol' days. It's astounding how much they kick ass. I remember an American Hardcore band coming through their town, playing a venue organized by one of them, listening to their stuff and their reaction was like "guys ... you're really totally fuckin' awesome ... that honestly totally blew us away, you could get pretty big in the states, where bands like Municipal Waste are the thing of the hour right now".

Not very Metal cause I've been listening to a lot of Johnny Cash and Tom Petty the last few days. It's kindofa weird change of pace for me.

But been listening to the new Immolation, Borknagar, Eluveitie, Finntroll, Dark Tranquillity, High on Fire and Orphaned Land discs the last month or so. I think though I'm only sold on the first two so far though. They're all still growing on me.

apparently German metallers Heaven Shall Burn did a "Defend Sparta" Show where they all dressed like spartans from 300 and sampled the movie throughout the show.

Pete Steele of Type O Negative died yesterday. While I can't say I'm surprised (they're guessing right now it was probably heart failure), I'm quite sad. Type O was hugely influential not only to my own music, but to a lot of my friends' as well.
