and wouldn't you know it, but the first week I'm required to read FA on my netbook, we're treated to 6 spectacular splash pages that I have to appreciate 1/3 at a time... but I do get to appreciate all the glorious detail, esp in Sirkka's room.

story-wise, I'm grateful for this pause. I'm glad we get to see everyone contemplating the huge decision that they're about to make, rather than just skipping to the inevitable argument. and the pairing up of the Freakangels is telling as well, esp the opening with Karl and Arkady.

This episode is magnifique. I normally tend to dislike splash pages, except probably one Sin city issue which was awesome. Here, yet, the choice of splash pages is justified. It emphasizes so beautifully on the growing intensity of the situation. A lull before the storm (sorry if it sounds a cliché to you native-speakers, but there are expression I never grow wary of, eg suspension of disbelief, how beautiful, anyway)

The new garden project we've heard talk of but not seen yet. The shot of Arkady here is just brilliant.

A open rift between at least two of the other Freak Angels over Luke. KK doesn't seem at all happy. And notice how you don't see Connor at all, or hear him for that matter?

The incredible page with Sirkka and Jack, together but so far apart in so many fundamental ways. You don't often see Sirkka looking as contemplative and uneasy as she does here. Are other other problems we haven't read about yet, or is she that upset about the Luke trial? I find that hard to believe since she's the one that outted him in the first place.

The storage locker, the shelves running dangerously low, but more importantly the way Miki's dealing with everything. She's ate up about Jack certainly, but she's also got to be feeling the strain of the recent murder, the influx of new people to Whitechapel, and the general state of things to do with her work. She's not bearing up too well. Harbinger of things to come? Caz has a look that says 'put him down and be done with him'. No doubt at all how she's gonna vote!

The page with Alice is freakin terrifying. Could you pack any more foreboding into a single page if you tried? The storm on the horizon...one really small girl standing there watching it come and powerless to do anything about it.

And then Kait. Her mind already made up about Luke, she's working the murder again. She really doesn't have time to waste on the guilty in custody, she wants the killer, and she's obviously on the trail.

The sheer intensity of this episode leads me to believe that the next several episodes are going to be about more than just Luke's trial. I rather doubt they're going to kill him off...he's too interesting. In fact, I'm almost sure of it.

I think that, maybe, Mark is going to be showing up soon. Not in the next two or three episodes soon, but within the next few months, I figure.

It's just that things seem to be coming to a head. Their supplies were stretched too thin before they adopted a hundred refugees. Their food and medical supplies are at their very limits, and are being depleted far too quickly. Luke has finally just broken the one law that they all seem to hold as sacred...usually. Also, a schism may be created when Luke is allowed to speak at his trial, when he calls out Sirkka. This episode clearly shows that things are about to get a lot worse. What's the one thing that could make this mess even worse? Been reading for awhile ( a friend of mine who was a huge Transmetropolitan fan sent me the link). Just wanted to chime in on a few things about this episode.
1: The artwork on these splash pages is, as everyone else has said, incredible. But I want to make particular mention of the light in each of the panels. I've been struck by Duffield's use of light ever since he started on the comic, but in these panels the lighting helps to convey the pensive air in Whitechapel and the powerful tensions that are unresolved between the Freakangels.

2: I really wonder at the silence portrayed in the panels. Of course since we aren't telepaths we can't see if there are other conversations moving amongst them. The FA seem to have a constant chatter line that they all tune in and out of during the day. While we don't seen any spoken dialog (except for KK's outburst) we might be unaware of conversations being held between these telepaths. If that's the case then what we are looking at is a town meeting being held in 'mental space' to decide Lukas' fate. If it isn't the case and they really aren't communicating telepathically then it means something else entirely different. Perhaps for the first time the FA are completely inside their own heads. I like this second interpretation better cause it fits what I think they must be going through. Its one thing to set a 'tough' law for a horrible crime. Its something completely different to enforce it. I think after Mark was exiled they made 'The Rule' and its consequence (execution) thinking that none of them would ever fall like that again. Now they are going to actually have to enforce it and I imagine they all have very different views on taking the life of someone they have known their entire lives. The rifts created here can easily tear Whitechapel apart.

Anyway just some random thoughts about another wonderful episode.
