Relaxing week. A fair bit of it spent watching the clouds over the river conwy. Nice clouds in Freakangelsland too but somehow they add to the gathering tension - again, amazing artwork.
Still haven't got rid of my tracheaitis tho.

But is it really a "lull"? Seems to me we're getting as much story in this week's pages as ever if not more. We're just getting it differently is all. Look for instance at how much is being told, and foreshadowed here.

The new garden project we've heard talk of but not seen yet. The shot of Arkady here is just brilliant.

A open rift between at least two of the other Freak Angels over Luke. KK doesn't seem at all happy. And notice how you don't see Connor at all, or hear him for that matter?

The incredible page with Sirkka and Jack, together but so far apart in so many fundamental ways. You don't often see Sirkka looking as contemplative and uneasy as she does here. Are other other problems we haven't read about yet, or is she that upset about the Luke trial? I find that hard to believe since she's the one that outted him in the first place.

The storage locker, the shelves running dangerously low, but more importantly the way Miki's dealing with everything. She's ate up about Jack certainly, but she's also got to be feeling the strain of the recent murder, the influx of new people to Whitechapel, and the general state of things to do with her work. She's not bearing up too well. Harbinger of things to come? Caz has a look that says 'put him down and be done with him'. No doubt at all how she's gonna vote!

The page with Alice is freakin terrifying. Could you pack any more foreboding into a single page if you tried? The storm on the horizon...one really small girl standing there watching it come and powerless to do anything about it.

And then Kait. Her mind already made up about Luke, she's working the murder again. She really doesn't have time to waste on the guilty in custody, she wants the killer, and she's obviously on the trail.

So yeah. I'd say we got a TON of story this week.

Well, thank you Mark for your awesome lettering this week :)

    Question:
Do the FA have electricity? I mean, I know there's generators around, but I noticed that Sirkka's room had little lights hung up and am wondering...

@diello - I know they were bandying-about the idea of wave-generated electricity. Whether or not there's any other power, I guess I hadn't really noticed. Most of the nights have been pretty dark...

Awesome art as always. And it is absolutely fascinating watching the Luke situation start to tear the Freakangels apart in just a few panels.

I was a little surprised at KK's comments. It implies that she's opposed to killing Luke. I'd have thought she'd be all in favour of blowing the little shit's head off.

I didn't think there is electricity: this panel says they haven't/hadn't electricity for lighting, and this panel shows candles. Their radios are powered by hand-cranks. In this episode, though, there's a stage-light up on the watch-tower, and those things attached to it look like small "magic of caz" fuel cells; so, electricity: it's new, newly-arrived.

Edit: the little lights in Sirkka's room are lit.

No, that from KK is to do with the fourth panel of this page.

Man, the art just keeps getting better and better. The sense of foreboding and encroaching doom is conveyed perfectly by the fifth page. The one girl who actually has some small idea of what's really going on here sees that...well, storm's a-comin'.

The sheer intensity of this episode leads me to believe that the next several episodes are going to be about more than just Luke's trial. I rather doubt they're going to kill him off...he's too interesting. In fact, I'm almost sure of it.

I think that, maybe, Mark is going to be showing up soon. Not in the next two or three episodes soon, but within the next few months, I figure.

It's just that things seem to be coming to a head. Their supplies were stretched too thin before they adopted a hundred refugees. Their food and medical supplies are at their very limits, and are being depleted far too quickly. Luke has finally just broken the one law that they all seem to hold as sacred...usually. Also, a schism may be created when Luke is allowed to speak at his trial, when he calls out Sirkka. This episode clearly shows that things are about to get a lot worse. What's the one thing that could make this mess even worse? Mark.

    love the single panel pages
as much as i love the crazy-action-sequence weeks, i really enjoy it when there's a few pages to just breathe and take a look at really brilliant, complex world going on here.

@Carykelly: thanks for sharing such a perceptive post. Going to go back and look at all the stuff I've missed now. You're right, there's a lot more going on in this episode than might initially meet the eye.

Hi Ariana. Hope you are well. teh Chief Mechanic should always be bowed down to and supplied with a tanker of Red Bull as tribute for maintaining order here week in and week out!
Yay Mark! Letterers are unsung heroes! That shit is fucking tiresome, but it's worth it!
Great episode, it zips by because of all the splash pages, but I can stare at each one forever because those textures are gorgeous!

After completing my first official week of waiting for a new FA to be released, how do you people deal with it!? 6 pages just isn't enough.
  3.  (6538.59)
@IMCL ... it's difficult, I tell you. I've been doing it for a year now. there were 21 episodes here when I arrived. it can be downright excruciating at times.

    There's a storm coming.

Looks like this will be an excellent week to draw some tea and settle in to reread the whole friggin thing. Sweet.
