Confession: I'm starting this mostly because, after twelve years of enjoying Trent Reznor's music, I'm finally going to watch Nine Inch Nails perform live on Monday. Unless there's another thread devoted to it (I did the obligatory search; all seems clear), talk/rave/complain about recent concert and gig experiences here.

NiN is amazing live; I saw them on the Downward Spiral tour and with David Bowie. I almost wish I hadn't grown so anti-touch; I would have liked to have seen NIN JA too.

Interestingly enough, the last concert I went to was the NIN/JA show in Noblesville, IN. I did a song-by-song write-up in my blog. I was trying to get to an indoor show in Chicago on the super-very-last leg, but I can't afford it. I've never seen a NIN indoor show, and I'm sad.

And before that, I don't even remember what the last show I went to was. I think it might have been Tool at the Xcel in Minneapolis. *shrugs*

The last show I saw was The Prodigy earlier this year, before they released Invaders Must Die.

It's nice that we're getting more concerts in Singapore, especially considering that a little over a decade ago, when Eric Clapton came to town, he supposedly told the crowd that he had to actually sign an agreement with the authorities that he would not play Cocaine (or, at least, that's what a friend who attended the show said).

Saw NIN live years ago on the NIN/Bowie tour. Reznor was either sick or wasted and shrieked through his set while bashing away at his guitar. The band wasn’t happy about it, and the show was awful. Bowie came on, his band was awful, he was clearly uncomfortable with the evening and everybody under forty gave up and went home early. I’ll always treasure my Pantera show memories, because even when they were too drunk to stand up or remember their songs, they could still put on a great live show and leave the crowd happy.

And if you ever get a chance to see Scissor Sisters play live, do it. They’re great live musicians and play stripped-down, uptempo rock versions of their songs that blow their albums out of the water.

Although it makes me sound a bit like a Birkenstock-wearing hippie pansy, I have to admit the best concert I ever saw was the Indigo Girls with 2 Nice Girls opening, in 1991 or 92, in a small Iowa campus theater in front of a crowd of about 800. 2 Nice Girls' version of /Speed Racer/ left a lasting impression.

I really should take advantage of the Boston music scene more, but I just can't bear actually attending most concerts. The last thing I probably attended was show at the Comcast Center a few years back, one of those combo-alterna-tour shows. I left during the Modest Mouse set after concluding the Yeah Yeah Yeahs had been the best thing there. I bought a ticket for the Dengue Fever show, but wimped out on actually attending.

In terms of a concert being a show and a form of visual entertainment, I saw Snoop Dog a few years ago when he was still doing Project Revolution, and I have to say, the guy can perform (even if you don't like his music). It might have been the contact high coming from the stage, but all of the props, dancing, and general entertainment value made it a great show; it wasn't just a bunch of people standing on stage singing and/or playing instruments.

I've seen the New Jersey band OURS a bunch of times (Each one fucking incredible).

Saw Alice Cooper in 05 and it was, also, fucking incredible.

Saw Blackfield early 07 which was great. Next month I'm seeing Porcupine Tree, too, which I'm looking forward to a lot.

Seeing The Mekons last week had a a huge effect on me. Could have been the intimacy (smallish, relatively new space within walking distance of my home), could have been the fact that they acted like a group of people who have been friends for almost as long as I've been alive, or it could have been the fact that they put more energy into a "semi-acoustic" than I would have thought possible.

I've seen a lot of great shows: Nick Cave, Sixteen Horsepower, Fucked Up, Front 242, Mission of Burma, etc, but nothing has ever made me want to listen to nothing else for an entire week the way The Mekons did.

Saw The Old Romantic Killer Band and Montana at Big Hands, Manchester on Thursday.

Big Hands is a tiny little bar next to Academy 1. It's basically a line with some seats and a bar.

However the above two band were amazing, TORKB's singer/guitarist ended the show in the audience, on a chair using whatever came to hand to play his guitar; bottles, glasses, the ceiling, some guy etc. Check 'em out if you get the chance.
Although be prepared to see a large man in nothing but his boxers and t-shirt.

I'm generally too poor to be able to go to big shows (and I hate crowds), so I mainly limit myself to great local acts. However, in one of my prouder moments (though this is absolutely going to date me), I skipped out on my senior prom to see Offspring and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones instead. I'd say that was definitely the superior choice.

I saw NIN a few years ago, with... some other band, I don't know who and really don't care. NIN was incredible, after the first hour and a half they had played every song I needed to hear and I had another list in my head. By the end of the night it was fulfilled as well. One of the best shows I've ever seen.

Last show I saw was Gogol Bordello. Over 2 hours of STRAIGHT FORWARD punk rock. There was maybe 5 minutes total of talking and another 5 minutes of the band leaving and coming back on stage for more. That is what most concerts should be like. Even got to see local band, the Monads afterward in the Halo Bar attached to the venue for about an hour before heading home. More shows need to be like Goglol and NIN.

Like @Allen i want my gigs to be full of energy with the whiff of Danger about it. As for gig going In Reykjavik, it´s a little weird. The issue is not with the music, it´s rather more with the crowds. The gigs above were metal/Hardcore bands and the crowd at these gig were much ready to go mental, dance around and break shit. But there are many bands who attract more of a "Hipster" crowd here and all you get from them is a pose with their arms firmly crossed, heads slightly cocked and barely moving. And there is NO DANCING around to the music unless everyone is very drunk. Ít´s a bullshit "Oh i´m Waaay to Cool to dance like an idiot to this stuff, in the Ubercool clothes that i´m wearing." Very annoying....

I'd forgotten about the Bosstones show I attended - same venue, at Grinnell College, less than 800 folks.

Rumor had it that we'd laid in something like 14 kegs for that concert, and that by showtime the Bosstones alone had worked through three of them. This was reflected in the lead singer's lack of judgment in estimating when the crowd was at the proper density and level of excitement to accept a stage dive. I'd never seen someone *bounce* off a wooden floor before.

I also caught Buddy Guy at the same venue. About halfway through the set, he gets a mischievous look on his face and yells out, "Hey, who you wanna hear? Clapton? I can do Clapton." Launches into a dead-accurate Clapton-style solo. Switches through a few other famous lead guitarists, then gets down off the stage (wireless pickups on the guitar), walks through the audience, back behind the stage and out to the loading dock, where he played for a while just staring out into the darkness, then through backstage and up again onto the stage through the back, and launched back into the song he'd started from, never missing a damn beat. Most impressive guitar solo I've ever seen.

Circle in 1993. This was during their insane noise-punk-krautrock phase, so the songs were mostly ten minutes of single riffs at full blast distortion. The club didn't have an elevated stage, so during the last song one of the guitarists just waded into the pogoing audience, hands held up. The audience promptly started ripping the strings off the guitar. The lights consisted of strobes, blacklight and emergency lights.

dEUS in Dublin, 2000. This was a weird one. I don't actually remember a thing about the concert, though I was entirely non-inebriated. I didn't dance, but was drenched in sweat at the end. And felt strangely clean. Feedback'll do strange this to me, it seems. Blur was the night's headliner, but didn't really stand a chance after the Belgians.

Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber, Tampere Jazz Happening 2006. 11 people, conducted improv, loud, funky, chaotic and utterly free. This was another one of those situations where I had to restrain myself from getting up from my seat and just screaming. I spent the half hour after the show just crying with joy.

The BellRays, 2008. 25 songs in 45 minutes. Lisa Kekaula throws one hell of a good party, yeah?

Last concert I went to was Flogging Molly on St. Patty's Day I believe.

Unfortunately, I went there after spending 10 hours standing around the Javits Convention Center wearing a giant foam smiley costume and all I could do was sit on the floor while watching them. There were far too many frat boys and their girlfriends apparently thought that their music was great for showing off their pole dancing moves. Kids these days! *shakes cane*

Before that, I'd seen Gogol Bordello, which is always amazing, and Amanda Palmer, who I thought was fantastic, but my boyfriend believed she lip synced many of the songs. Sadly, Zoe Keating had to fly off to another country instead of play NYC that night as well, though I saw her last fall playing at MIT, which was beautiful. Zoe Keating's music is achingly beautiful, moreso in a large, echoing auditorium.

Oh, and I go to the Pulsewave shows in Manhattan every couple of months to see the 8-bit musicians (or videogame musicians, whatever you want to call them) 'cause my friend plays them all the time. I wish people in NYC would dance once in a while. Heck, one time at a Gogol Bordello show, my boyfriend and I were dancing to the wonderful music playing before they came on (stuff like on this Bar Gypsy comp we own that GB promotes) and people were giving us sour looks for not standing perfectly still, staring at the stage like zen cows.

My memory is starting to jog with all the live music I've seen lately. Despite all my bitching, there are an amazing amount of small music shows to see in this city, even if the concert goers are lame. I saw my friends' band "Graph" play at Goodbye Blue Monday in Bushwick and the "Two Man Gentleman Band" play the Slipper Room for the Scarlett Takes Manhattan book release party. I think I like the small, intimate live shows much better than full on concerts of sweaty people who didn't even get that way from dancing. They also have better ticket prices (free).

Another small band I saw live a year or more ago was Hazmat Modine, a NYC-based jazz band that played a wonderful bar that served really good whiskey down on Bleeker St. Since they're local, I do recommend catching them sometime.

I, too, saw the NIN/Bowie tour. Twice. The second time, somehow my friend and I weasled our way onto the dance floor area of the Meadowlands Arena, and I was right up against the front, smack in the middle, with Bowie and Reznor singing Reptile. Bowie has more stage presence than ANY OTHER LIVING BEING. Moshing to March of the Pigs was probably one of my fondest memories.

The best show EVER would be the Pigface/FM Einheit tour in 1998(?) in NYC. Like a tiny crowded basement, low ceilings and total chaos. It was amazing.

Also, seeing The Jesus Lizard two weeks ago in Chicago was fabulous, and one of the first shows I've ever been to where it SOUNDED right. I could hear everything clearly, without distortion, and without having to scream afterwards. Granted, it was an outdoor venue, but it was still impressive.

My Dad just told me about a show he saw a about three years ago... Keith Emerson playing at a local bar for free... performing all of Tarkus, some classical adaptations, all the best of ELP, and the show lasted hours. I'm sooooo jealous.

Have seen Nine Inch Nails live, and it is quite the experience. My preference is for smaller, more intimate shows, but I'm definitely glad I got to see him/them/it at least once. Definitely one of my top ten musical entities of all time.

@Atomicsloth; Right now, my jealousy is so mighty it may rip a hole in the space/time continuum, if only for seeing Mastodon and NIN on the same day.
For everyone who managed to see NIN/JA, I want you to know YOU STOLE MY CHILDHOOD DREAM.

Like apparently everyone else here, I've seen NIN perform. Once at a Big Day Out, shortly before Trent finally quit the junk. He was a mess. During the whole set, I think he remembered maybe two lines of lyrics. He apologised just before he tried to finish with 'Hurt', saying that although he'd fucked up everything else, he didn't want to fuck up this one song. He then started singing the second verse instead of the first, and broke down crying. It was pretty intense.
Years later, we saw him again for his 'With Teeth' tour, and the difference was incredible. The year after that, he came back to tour 'Year Zero', and my faith had been so restored that I went on crutches with a broken ankle. It was fucking excellent.

Several other concerts have been great for a number of reasons.

Most entertaining: Opeth, 2008. The music was fucking unbelievable, and Mikael was hilarious. 'Are you ready for a cock-rocky good times? Fuck yah!'

Spontaneous dance inducing: Holy Fuck, 2009. No-one works a mouth-operated keyboard whilst playing a film splicer like those lads.

Most intimate: Rosetta, 2008. Tiny venue, enormous sound, and the guys were almost immersed in the crowd.

Biggest surprise/most energetic: The Dillinger Escape Plan, 2009. They were just everywhere, all at once, non-stop. Technical and tight, leaping off every available surface and wall, literally swinging off chains hanging off the rafters without skipping a single complex beat.

These days I primarily go to gigs for more local bands. I'm quite into a bit of post/prog-rock, and there are several HYPNOTICALLY AWESOME Sydney/Melbourne bands. When you can spend $10 to see brilliant bands in an intimate environment, it makes shelling out $100+ for a nose-bleed seat in a stadium a little hard to swallow.

If you're in Sydney/Melbourne and enjoy post/prog/instrumental/rock, you MUST SEE the following bands: Meniscus, sleepmakeswaves, Buzzard and Shanghai. Those are my personal favourites, but other worthies include Space Project, Nucleus, Mushroom Giant and Los Alamos.

Saw Electric Masada at Yoshi's this year which was awesome (Marc Ribot on guitar, Trevor Dunn on bass, Jamie Saft on keys...to name a few).
I'm excited to see the Jesus Lizard here in the SF Bay Area in October.
And SUPER excited to see Mastodon/Dethklok/Converge/High on Fire in Vegas in November. That is such the dream show.
(Also, though he's not a musician per se, I'm gonna see Patton Oswalt coming up in September.)

Well, the 2 best shows I've ever seen were probably These Arms Are Snakes and Saul Williams.

TAAS were supporting Isis on the In the Absence of Truth tour, and while the two styles of music might be completely different, TAAS completely slayed it and I really wouldn't have cared if Isis didn't bother to take the stage. The night belonged to the snakes.
Their albums sound great, but their live shows shit all over the albums.

Saul Williams was here in December touring for Niggy Tardust and the whole show was amazing. Being in a room with Saul I felt like I was witnessing the next stage of human evolution. The man and his music are amazing.

That's the worst thing about living in Australia - you're lucky if a band you like tours every 5 years...

@Corey; Not wanting to bang on about it too much, but which state in Australia are you? I mostly know of bands in Sydney and Melbourne, but there are kick-arse prog/post/math/jazz-influenced/hardcore bands playing for cheap in pubs all over Australia. I still lament the lack of international touring like you, but when there's a seriously good fucking show in Sydney nearly every second weekend, I don't lament too hard.

I live on the Gold Coast. There are basically no live music venues on the Gold Coast, so it's a one hour trip up to Brisbane anytime I want to see bands. I don't think there are any "kick-arse prog/post/math/jazz-influenced/hardcore bands" based in Brisbane, 'cause I'm sure I would have heard about them by now.

But feel free to post some names and I'll check them out - Always keen for more local talent, and JJJ can be pretty lacking for heavier stuff that isn't fairly traditional sounding punk or metal.

@Corey; Oh, I understand your pain. I lived on the Gold Coast for a number of years (mostly during high school) and consequently fled to Sydney because I wanted to pursue art, and it's a goddamn cultural vacuum.

Brisbane, however ...
Unfortunately you just missed Shanghai, who I saw a few weeks ago. Carnival/Mr. Bungle/jazz-influenced group, really cool live. I know sleepmakeswaves have gone to Brisbane a few times, but I don't know if they're going to be there anytime soon. Instrumental post-rock, absolutely transporting when they're on top of their game. Should either go to Brisbane again anytime soon, I highly recommend them. Also, I understand Nucleus have just been and gone (last weekend), another good post/prog band.

However, you are in luck this weekend: Progfest is coming to Brisbane. The Progfest in Sydney was very good. I don't know many of the bands on the roster for the Brisbane Progfest I must admit, but Alchemist are an excellent prog-metal outfit who have been around for years. For $15, I don't think you can go very wrong.

Last show: a Secret Policemen's Ball at a "new music" night last week. Really cool sorta-local band my boyfriend had meant to try out for, but that never worked out. There were 4 people there for them. Including boyfriend and myself. They still played well. Spent most of the night talking comics and music w/ them and the sound guy (that's what makes a good show for me, usually).

Upcoming shows: Boyfriend is wanting to see Slick Idiot at the local all-ages godawful punk dive that we used to go to all the time. So there's that.

Best shows:
- Elvis Costello w/ the Nashville Symphony
- Every time I've seen Tub Ring (even though boyfriend and I are usually the only ones that stay for them when they come to Nashville... this place sucks for live music), especially the line-up of Vilejive, Born Empty, and them.
- Almost every time I've seen Look What I Did.

ive seen a lot of shows this year.
this

was by far the best. 60 people crammed into a garage for HATRED SURGE...it was like 110 degrees outside. inside it was hotter than jesus christ. sweat condensation was coming off of the ceiling. they played everything i wanted. 15 or so songs in 20-25 minutes of absolute brutality. someone jumped off my shoulders in a room with a nine foot ceiling. i cant believe no one get hurt.

in more recent news from this week, i found out that THE COPYRIGHTS played down the street from me on friday night. too bad i found out at around 6 pm saturday. goddammit!

In Japan concerts start early and finish by 11pm for some reason that I'm not quite sure about considering bars open until 5am and there's always someone singing karaoke somewhere. Bands all start exactly when they're scheduled to and play for exactly as long as they are meant to. Incedentally the one time I saw NIN they were over an hour late but the ridiculous light show they spent that time setting up was probably worth it.

Recently I saw Zazen Boys (who I stuck over in the non-english music thread) play in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. Tomakomai is not a big city and has precisely no music scene and possibly no music venues, so they played in a rehearsal space over a music store. Since they're a pretty major indie artist, who usually play a mid-size touring venue in a major city it was pretty fucking spectacular, and would've been one of the best shows I'd ever seen if they hadn't ended on a formless five minute jam, and if I hadn't seen them give one of the best performances I've ever seen, at an outdoor festival last summer. Oh man! I just looked on youtube and they played America this year and last year, I'm sure they were just playing bars so if they tour again they're really worth seeing:

I also saw a band called Mass of the Fermenting Dregs a couple of months ago at one of the loudest concerts I've ever had the pleasure to attend. Really, four days of hearing damage and my own voice distorting in my ears when I spoke. They were incredible too, and they're playing the 4am sunrise slot at a big two day festival I'm going to this week. It's all Japanese artists which makes me check out a lot of new music, plus I can see Polysics, Midori and Capsule who I love.

Iron Maiden popped my stadium gig cherry last summer and boy, did it work. Usually I can't stand big venues due to the lack of any kind of intimacy, but hearing 40000 people belt out all the songs at pretty much the same volume as the band on stage was bloody thrilling.

I caught Wilco and Connor Oberst & the Mystic Valley Band at the Lowell Spinner's baseball field about a month ago,

It was a gorgeous night, and then, over the 12 minute course of "spiders (kidsmoke)," a few raindrops started falling down, gradually building in frequency over that time. Jeff Tweedy got the audience to clap along with the beat, and then the band cut out, leaving just the clapping audience for almost 90 seconds. The raindrops started falling faster, more frequently during this section, and then right when the band kicked back in with the final chorus-y guitar riff, the sky exploded into a veritable monsoon. They played "Hummingbird" with rain flying in every direction, went offstage, and came back for an encore of "I'm the Man Who Loves You" while the road crew pretty much held tarps over them. Nels Cline was using a towel to both play his guitar, AND keep it dry. They were going to play more but...well, the threat of electrocution was pretty large by this point. And as cool as it would be to have been there on the day Jeff Tweedy died in the middle of a song, I would much rather, ya know, he not actually die.

The ending of that night could not possibly have been more epic.

I also went a free concert at Government Center in Boston a few weeks back. Passion Pit, whose album I very much enjoy (and I apparently started college with the singer?), was pretty awful. The singer couldn't keep his voice up at all (same goes for Gaslight Anthem, who played later, and whom I enjoy). To make up for it, there were a bunch of Bro Dudes/Ya Dudes who were tough guy dancing to Passion Pit. I'm pretty sure these guys would have looked more in place at a Nickelback show, so seeing them groove to some electropop was fantastic.
That same night, I was quite impressed by Ra Ra Riot and the Airborne Toxic Event, neither of whom I had ever heard before.

I was there too and yes...Passion Pit was indeed disappointingly terrible. I suspected before the show and know it well enough now that they're more of a studio-band, relying on production for their sound. That's all well and good for some bands or performers i like, but those will change it up/mix it up for a live performance or effortlessly duplicate/replicate what was recorded. I saw Cut Copy live a few months ago and THAT'S how you do the electro-dance-pop-rock-whatever live...even if it was done by New Order 20 years ago already, but at least Cut Copy have apparently studied their predecessors. :P

I was also impressed with Ra Ra Riot that day and i enjoyed Metric's low-key set of piano/guitar.
I didn't stay for the rest of the bands.

White Rabbits - Middle East Downstairs (not bad! reminded me of early Spoon)

I REALLY wanted to see the local art-punk-cabaret-duo of Humanwine a couple months ago but i didn't tear myself away from studying that evening. Harumph.

A few months ago I went to the first Guano Apes concert of their new tour. Don't know ow but they came to our student's "end of year festival". I was on the first row and I was really afraid because the audience was just crazy (lots of stupid drunk students) and the security was crap, they couldn't control anything and when the bars were collapsing they just improvised some bars to hold when the others were almost giving away. The concert was interrupted so they could replace 2 bars that collapsed. Don't know how anyone didn't get hurt except for a girl who fell and got crushed between the audience and the bars.

Today I'm watching Windsor for the Derby and Black Bombain. It's a series of free concerts on my city, around 2 free concerts every month until February. Last month was L'Enfance Rouge (look out for them, they're really good) and Interm.ission.

I started going to live shows in 84, and having been an entertainment editor for a newspaper, then a magazine, through the early-mid 90's, I've seen a metric fuckload of bands. There are very few acts at this point that I've wanted to see live that I haven't. Some memorable ones were...

1985 - Motley Crue/Ozzy (shout at the Devil + Bark at the Moon tour) - Before Crue became a 'hit band' with Theatre of Pain and their chick-pleasing-ballads, the guitarist of my band at the time and I drove 120 miles to the shitty Spokane Coliseum to see this show. It was one of the most insane shows in terms of the crowd reaction alone... spiked gloves, belts and wristbands hadn't been outlawed yet at shows and the majority of the 2k crowd in the pit were hopped-up/drunk/high crazy fuckers who were there to get as insane as was humanly possible. The guy next to me took a spiked gauntlet to the side of his head, and blood went gushing everywhere. I saw at least 20 people get helped over the rail by security, bleeding and wounded in just Crue's set alone. The raw energy from the bands just made it all that much more over the top. Dangerous, scary and fun.

1986 - Jane's Addiction - the Scream in LA. (multiple shows) During the club years, Jane's was know for doing two sets. They'd do a first set all aucoustic, and come back 30-90 minutes later and do another set 'electric'. It was very obvious at the time that Perry and Dave were shooting up on the break between sets, because you could count on 50% of the time, one of them being 'on the nod' during the second set... with one notable occassion being so bad that Dave's lolled against his amps, befor sliding to the floor like a puppet with its string severed. The shows where they were 'on', it was magic... one of those club gigs where you know you are watching history. The ones where they were completely ripped out of their minds? Notsomuch. (Note: Guns and Roses during this period were similar at venues like the Cathouse. Brilliant when 'on', horrible when not)

1990 - NIN - The Cactus Club, San Jose. Pretty Hate Machine had just come out two weeks prior, and a friend had tickets to this show which happened to co-incide with me driving through town on the way to LA. I had heard Terrible Lie, and Down In It in the car on the way to the show, but other than that, had no idea what the band sounded like, or what the songs were. In a tiny little venue that fit maybe 400-500 people, it was one of the single best shows I've ever seen. Tight, furious, raging and intense. Listening to PHM after the show, i was dissapointed by how 'tame' it was in comparison (and loved Broken because it captured more of the feel of that club show.) I also found out a couple years ago, that Laurenn McCubbin was at that show as well. Small world and all of that.

1992 - Lollapalooza 2. Seeing Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Ministry, Lush, Jesus & Mary Chain, and the RHCP within a 12 hour span was an amazing thing. Pearl Jam, who I've seen many times, has never matched the physicality or intensity they had on this tour, with Veddar climbing the scaffolding and dropping 15-20 feet into the crowd on his back. Ministry had a literal WALL of amps, 15 feet high, that covered the entire stage, and starting off with the staccato opening riff of NWO, with 5 guitarists, I literally felt my heart misfire, and skip beats. Music so loud, i felt like my organs were going to dissolve.

Best shows I've been to:
Tom Waits (I may have been the only one under 40 there) He played for 3 hours, and put on a great show. As a bonus his banter was awesome.

Girl Talk- giant dance party though the second night I saw him I nearly got trampled and was covered in bruises and icky sweatdensation afterward.

This little bitty Psychobilly Showdown in Bozeman that was just a good ol' time (burlesque and all kinds of Blank-abilly bands)

Vampire Weekend in Missoula was fun and a great first exposure to them.

First Concert was the Rolling Stones on one of their many many last tours. Something about Exiting I think it was called

A friend and I once attacked a security guard to get into the pit at a Slipknot show (yeah, yeah...I was like 17. Give me a break). The singer saw it and promised it would be on the DVD. Later, on the radio, the clown guy called it the most extreme thing he'd seen at a Slipknot show. For some reason, they wound up using the London gig instead for the DVD, so that was kind of disappointing.

Only shows I've seen in the last year or so have been my brother's band Fishing with Shotguns. They're pretty cool. He plays the guitar and does this cool thing where he spins it around his back by the strap.

Also once saw Tool with Meshuggah during the Lateralus tour. It was the second time I'd seen Meshuggah - the first being at Ozfest, but the first I'd seen Tool. I'd really like to see both again some time, especially now that I've become a pretty big Tool fan.

Other than that, I've seen NiN, System of a Down (twice), and about 100 or so punk bands. I've got tinnitus now, so I try to avoid live music for the most part so it doesn't get any worse.

I have been to... way fewer gigs than I would like, because there aren't enough local artists on my roster and most of my favourites come out to bloody Australia once every few years at best. So far my favourite has been the Matches - their music turned out to sound much better live and I left liking several songs I'd previously skipped over. They have this amazing energy onstage that really translates to the audience - friendliest lively mosh pit ever.

Pity about their sense of style though :P I have been laughing hysterically at their clothing choices for years and this website layout is appalling. Still, it's sad that I'm unlikely to see them again.

I've got tinnitus now, so I try to avoid live music for the most part so it doesn't get any worse.

I saw RAtM and The Jesus Lizard back in the 1990s when they were doing a tour with enough sound equipment for a stadium tour. The show I went to was in an indoor college basketball arena, and the arena staff actually let the bands pile their speakers up in the middle of the floor and blast it. It was scary loud outside the arena during the sound check. On the way home we blew out the rear speakers in the car because we couldn’t hear anything. I couldn’t have a conversation for three days unless people screamed into my ears, and loud noise has made them ring ever since. But it was worth it, because those bands put on the best goddamned live show I’ve ever seen. Even better than GWAR.

As for pit stories, maybe it’s just a Southern thing, but I never ended up in a bad pit. At the worst someone would start trouble and promptly get his ass tossed out. I have seen a pit on a lawn at a Pantera show yank a security guy into the crowd and tear his clothing off. IIRC that was the same show where the entire lawn was torn up, the show stopped, and police called in to stop a small riot that ensued. Goddamn Ozzfest was great before nu-metal went commercial.

Anyway, the nails show kicked off here in NYC over the weekend, and people were lined up around the block to get into Webster Hall. I skipped it, and I was regretting it until I saw that the set list included the entire Downward Spiral—I’m just too old for that much Clinton era emo angst. But it seems like those who went had a great time.

I'm going to see KMFDM in Philadelphia about a month from now. I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

I worked local crew for concerts around Raliegh NC from 1993-1996 and got to work so many concerts from backstage I can't remember all of them. For some reason I was always stuck working a lof of the non-descript Country music shows, not like cool old country but "new" adult contemporary country, and it all sucked.

The concerts that stood out were because of the people working on the crew and the musicians

Bonnie Rait - absolutely great show and she was very nice to everyone
Van Halen - well not them but Sammy Hagar is really nice and a very cool guy
Barry White - absolutely as smooth as any human being can be (like you didn't know that already)
Morphine - they were playing stage 2 of Horde fest and I was working that one. They were really nice guys, I hung out backstage with them talking backstage while the other bands were playing. right before setting them up They absolutely were one of the best live bands I have ever seen. Absolutely amazing live - too bad
I know I'm going to get made fun of for this - Yanni - he came and talked to everyone and was nice to all his crew and they loved working for him. Had a fun time with his crew
Live - didn't get to interact with the band, but my fellow crew members that did said they were cool. Their roadies were awesome and a lot of fun to work with

Anita Baker - Everyone on her crew hated her, absolutely detested her in every way and loathed working for her. She's a spoiled brat and made everyone near her miserable. Apparently she absolutely sucked all of the good out of wherever she was.
Eagles - I can confirm that Don Henley is an arrogant douchebag if you didn't already know

the weird
Barry Manilow - just apparently a very odd fellow according to his crew. Not mean, not bad, just very odd
Hank WIlliams Jr Showed up to the back loading dock in his limo late for the show, wreaking of alcohol, stumbles up the stairs, walks to the guitar tech who is in the middle of stringing a guitar, grabs it (it only has 5 strings, not tuned, not plugged into wirless yet) and starts stumbling towards the stage. The stage manager manages to somehow get the entire band from the back dressing rooms, the lights turned down and the sound guys notified in about 30 seconds so the show starts. He plays for about 40 minutes says goodnight and stumbles back off the stage, out the back and into the limo

the violent
lynard skynard - the security had to break up more fights in the audience during that concert than any they had ever had to in the history of the venue. They were even pulling members of the local crew (me) out to help with crown control there were so many fights breaking out

I did work the Bowie/NIN show back in those years - it was a great show, I wish Bowie had played more of his older stuff since I had never seen any of it live.

so in summation, much much more good than bad, and a hell of a summer job during college.

Since we seem to have opened the floor to best/worst shows, one that really floored me was Radiohead and Foo Fighters in a bar, summer of '97. It was an invitation-only industry event, and at the last possible minute a pair of tickets fell into my lap courtesy of a radio-station rep. Phoned my friend John up, and unbeknownst to me, not only was it his birthday, but he was bummed out because his girlfriend was out of town and nobody remembered the birthday.

We got high as a kite and went to the show. Foo Fighters were pretty great (first of five times that I've seen 'em), but Radiohead were over-the-top trippy and psychedelic. Fucking stellar night.

Worst was probably the much-vaunted "farewell" end-of-the-century show by Kiss. Initially it was promised that the show was fully licensed, but was instead downgraded to shitty beer and wine coolers. Gene Simmons floated rumours of the Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters as opening acts, but it turned out that was bullshit, too. And they said beforehand they'd be recording a new Alive album that night. More bullshit.

To top it off, I was going with a whole bunch of friends, and we were meeting beforehand for a pot-luck dinner. Unfortunately, almost nobody brought food, and I'd skipped lunch that day because my boss was supposed to be giving us the afternoon off and giving us our paychecks. Instead, he kept us waiting till almost 6:00pm. Because he was a gigantic douche.

Anyhow, I got absolutely plowed on vodka, and to this day nobody even knows if I made it to the concert or not. I had a torn-off ticket stub in my pocket the next day, but no recollection of even getting to the stadium.

Fuck you, Gene Simmons. You lying sack of shit.

Alice Cooper - During his Rock n' Roll Carnival tour. Fucking fantastic performance as always. Got to meet him after the show and he was a super-nice guy.

Dr. John - Started off kind of out of it but got up to full awesome-speed after a couple of songs.

Van Morrison - Him, practically a fucking orchestra and some of his old songs. Perfect.

Dresden Dolls - They were opening for Nine Inch Nails and were the best part of that night.

Guy Clark - He did L.A. Freeway. <3

Bill Joe Shaver - Very small venue. Incredibly intimate and moving concert

Raffi - Apparently a 3 year-old me got on stage and danced. Since I have never done that at a concert other than that one, I have to think that this makes my list of best concerts.

Went to a bar in Murfreesboro, TN to see a Secret Policeman's Ball last night. Got in for free. The flyer said that the show started at nine. Apparently, in college towns, that means load-in starts at nine.
First opener was a guy who used to be in some band I'd never heard of, playing a couple of covers (and one original) on solo electric guitar. "Die, Die My Darling" was interesting.
Second band was called Organ Thief (from Memphis), but I'm not going to link them, because fuck them. For some reason, they were convinced everyone was there to see them. Which meant they played FOREVER. They even had to borrow aSPB's drum kit. When they asked the owner of said drums if they could play one more, that was fine. But they played THREE more. Because some drunk asshole kept yelling "One more!" Fuck any band that thinks they're so awesome, they can play 10 minutes into the opener's set.
aSPB was cool. They got their friends to play musical chairs during one song. I was dead tired by the time they played, though, so it wasn't as fun as the last time I saw them play.

don't really get to many gigs these days as there are no worthwhile venues nearby but my highlights include...

Slayer on the reign in blood tour. i was 18 and already a gig veteran but this was just the most intense live experience of my life to that point until i saw DRI, Holy Terror and Napalm Death and the Hammersmith Clarendon. It was so hot every breath hurt, the divers were jumping off the stacks feet first in steel toecap boots and there was blood everywhere...on the floor, the walls, the ceiling, the audience...everywhere. oh and bill the guitarist from Napalm was teaching shane the bassist the songs as they went along because he'd only joines the day before.

Godflesh played one of their very early gigs in Cardiff. We were all about the faster hardcore in cardiff but these two guys and a drum machine turned up and proceeded to play the slowest, heaviest, murkiest sludge i'd ever heard.

Fugazi were awesome at TJ's in Newport on their first british tour. i knew almost nothing about them at the time just that the singer had been in minor threat. 4 skinny bald guys took the stage and opened with waiting room. the rest of the night is a blur.

More recently the gigs that stick out are The Boredoms playing their 4 drummers plus yamatsuka eye on wierd guitar construction and screaming set. completely bonkers and utterly enthralling.

the best gigs though have to be the two times recently I've seen Faust (my absolute favourite band). The second time i saw them they started playing while the drummer was still outside having a ciggie and the singer (Jean-herve peron) was walking around the audience with an active chainsaw passing it above our heads - and when i say above i mean no more than a foot above. and then they turned on the angle grinder. wonderful.

i went to see THE REVENGE last night. it was the singers birthday-i have grown up seeing his bands, and as a reporter i now see him on PBS locally-so it was more of a party than a show. which, to be honest SUCKED. i wanted a rowdy show vibe, but instead found out that people there DIDNT want dancing and a circle pit. they wanted to hold their beer in the air in nod along. the highlight was trying to do a flip over the front row, knocking a beer out of some girls hand and smashing my face on the ground, only to later get punched in the face by the girl. it was hilarious (and didnt really hurt. she was tiny).

I was going to see Look What I Did and NRE (Nathan Ells, formerly of Submethod, currently of The Human Abstract) tonight, but I couldn't get out of work in time. I absolutely love LWID's shows. They typically have fun crowds, like the ones you guys have been referring to. One of the few bands that I don't feel self-conscious rocking out w/.

In that vein, what shows have you regretted not seeing?

I was born far too late to see Fugazi, and everything I've read about their live shows has made me wish I was older. Same w/ U2's ZooTV and Popmart tours. Especially Popmart. I loooooved Pop. I may be the only person who would've really appreciated seeing that stuff live and in vibrant and sparkly color.

I definitely agree with you, but I'm just as equally irked by meatheads who show up for the sole reason of being tough guys, and actually set out to hurt people

thats why metalcore and chugga-chugga (nonpunk) straight edge shows in phoenix are HORRIBLE. buncha kids trying to "be hard" and "stand their ground" rather than just get rowdy and have fun.

general rule for me: if people are smiling, its all good. its those scowling tough guys that are problematic usually.

oh hell yeah...my parents saw him a bunch and it sounds like fucking fun. he played a halloween show every year (for a few years) in NYC, and my parents and a few aunts and uncles would go, tripping HARD on acid. every year was like a different spectacle. and they all remembered it a little differently too, haha

@brittanica - Fugazi was actually one of the worst shows I've ever seen, but it wasn't their fault. The show was at Binghamton University, '92 or '93, full of Long Island frat boy types, and they insisted on trying to do bad moshing and stage diving to the point where Fugazi stopped the show and told the crowd to chill the fuck out.

Also, I lost the heel off of one of my steel-toed Navy dress shoes, which were my beloved mosh pit footwear and have never gotten another pair since.

Know what really irks me? Kids that get to the front of the stage then get upset when things get rowdy. If you're at a show where shit like that's bound to happen, you should fucking know better.

Oh yeah the other night i saw a friend perform as part of a performance of Guitar Trio (which i'm having trouble finding any info on) but really what it was was 7 guitar players and a my mate on bass with a drummer, and they play 1 note but in different ways and timings, it got really trippy really fast.

Last gig I went to was Alice Cooper, it was pretty awesome. I've seen him three times now.

I saw NIN twice earlier in the year too... once in a club, once at a festival. It was awesome both times.

Discovered Unearth when they opened for Inflames earlier in the year... Unearth were great, Inflames not so much.

@ Brittanica - I saw the U2 Pop Mart tour at (the old!) Wembley Stadium, and despite not being a huge U2 fan it's still up there as one of the best gigs I've ever seen just for the sheer spectacle. And the friend I went with was a super-fan so it was fun to see him literally vibrating with excitement. I think he didn't really take it all in, or process a lot of what was going on, because when they walked off stage he turned to me and said "That was so good but I was really hoping they'd play One and Mysterious Ways and..." and I went "Dude, I'm pretty sure they're gonna play an encore." and his eyes lit up.

I also saw Fugazi and that was definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen. At the start of the show Ian McKaye asked "Is there anything anyone wants to talk about before we get started?" and someone screamed out "WAITING ROOM!" He shot a withering glance in that direction and said "I asked if there was anything you wanted to talk about, not for requests" and you could see him mentally crossing Waiting Room off the setlist for that night. AND THEN they made the exact show I went to available to buy online as an official bootleg thing because it was so good!

Well I saw U2 at Soldier Field last weekend (the 13th), and though it wasn't up there on theme like ZooTV or Popmart, it was certainly a spectacle. And a damn good show. Certainly better than when I saw them at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Probably, in fact, the best show I've ever seen. I'm getting to the point now that I can't really afford to go to many concerts anymore (nor find people to babysit my child), so I don't get to see as many smaller shows with unknown (well, lesser-known) bands as I used to.

Plus I'm a dirty populist at heart, always striving for acceptance.

Last concert I went to was the Dropkick Murphys show at Irish fest in St. Paul, early August. Big free outdoor type thing. Great time. Those cats play, and you'd be hard pressed to find a more considerate (while still insanely brutal) pit. Previous to that, I was taggin along doing live art on a cross country tour with Tub Ring, which was amazing. Got to see Creature Feature and The Birthday Massacre on all of the west coast shows, then Leathermouth and MSI on the east cost leg. Plus, you know, Tub Ring.

Right now, looking forward to the Dethklok / Mastodon show coming up in October.

i have been in show withdrawal, not going to anything REALLY good since july. this weekend will be TITUS ANDRONICUS and my friends THE OSS. besides that next week is SOUL CONTROL (who i dont really like) and one of my local favorites RUN WITH THE HUNTED. they dont play out so much lately, and i havent seen them since their one sided 12" came out back in april (?) so im pretty excited.

i saw LEATHERMOUTH last year and they were better than i expected...too bad the show was full of little kids who only came out because frank is in the band. it was with MC CHRIS, who i was VERY disappointed with. one of the most boring live performances i think ive ever seen.

(to the person who has the list- i keep a calendar with eevry show ive ever seen. it goes back to 1994. its very very full. it is also one of most prized possesions)

Just got back from seeing Slam Dunk Contest and only Slam Dunk Contest at The Rutledge (which I think is best club in Nashville, but no one plays it). The other band on the bill showed up an hour early, and for some reason, decided to bounce immediately.
Fun show. They just goofed off the whole time, and they had a guest guitarist from Born Empty. Didn't know the songs all that well, but he sure knows how to tell a bad joke.

Just got back from an indie music night. Enjoyed Captain Kickarse and the Awesomes quite a lot and not just for their name - I'm normally a fan of bands with, like... vocals, but these guys were just so good at all the other stuff I didn't care. They were followed by the atonal dissonant artfuckery of Ghoul, some adorable baby rockers called Rockets Explode (their PARENTS were there, oh my god - but they were pretty great if a little generic) and Super Florence Jam, who had the same leet skillz as Captain but sadly in a style I just can't get into.

I saw Them Crooked Vultures on the 14th. They were pretty good. The vocals by Josh Homme were okay... musically, the band was on fire. Grohl beat the hell out of his kit, and John Paul Jones looked great. The crowd sucked because no one knew the songs and it's DC. DC crowds are usually tame. I saw Dave Grohl's mom in the private box rocking out haha...

Went to see OM the next day... great show. Being in an altered state of mind might have had something to do with it. I wish Sleep would do some reunion shows in the US...

Saw Electric Six last night, w/ Millions of Brazilians and The Gay Blades opening.
Millions of Brazilians is such a good name for a band. Their music was pretty cool, too.
The Gay Blades' music didn't really interest me at all. It was like every other song, they were ripping off The White Stripes. But the singer's stage banter was quite off the wall.
Electric Six is awesome live. And they played FOREVER. Dick Valentine talked for minutes at a time, and it was amazing.

Introduced myself to Gogol Bordello live a week ago. Just as good as everyone here's been saying!

NIN, yeah, With-Teeth tour once in Denver with Dresden Dolls (also kick-ass) and Lights in the Sky twice, including at Red Rocks. Mind blowing. Also saw the Smashing Pumpkins at Red Rocks, but their 20th anniversary tour show in St. Louis was better.

Caught Massive Attack in Denver as well, WITH Horace Andy and Liz Frasier. I was ecstatic.

Sigur Ros were also amazing, that was probably in 2005, 2006? Well before they changed to their stripped down, "acoustic" style, which I don't enjoy as much. It was beautiful and epic.

Meat Beat Manifesto put on a fantastic multi-media show, do not miss them if you have the chance.

Also, if you're into the Americana folk-rock singer/songwriter sort of thing, if you want a band you can drink wine to while falling madly in love with the vocalist, never miss a chance to see a group from Ohio called Over the Rhine. They are a genius husband-wife team with an amazing touring band who have been at it for twenty years now. They never disappoint.

Best gig I ever went to bar none was the Beta Band in Edinburgh. I think back in 98.

I saw Arcade Fire last year, I'm not a fan, but my good lady loves them and they put on a brilliant show.

Only gigs I've seen this year was Jarvis Cocker, I'm a huge fan but I left about an hour in because the sound was fucking awful, I'd been up for days and I had a flight to the other side of the planet 6 hours later and a local band called Stage Blood, who were really really impressive and reminded me of somewhat of Fugazi.

In two days, I'll be taking my 13 year-old son to see the Fresh Air tour, headlined by Brother Ali (Evidence from Dilated Peoples is along, as is fellow label-mates Toki Wright and BK-One whose recent Brazilian-influenced album Radio do Canibal has some kickin' tracks).

I've been a big supporter/fan of Ali's fo several years now, and seeing him on stage for what will be the third time (technically), but this'll be the first actual concert.

Better yet? I'll be seeing him on the first night of his welcome home shows. He's been on the road away from his wife and family, friends and city for ten weeks.

Better still? My fiance won tickets to the same night, so she and Tori (her 10 year-old daughter) will be joining William and I.

I expect a grand time to be had, best believe.

To all of you getting to see some of your favourites, I hope the shows exceed(ed) your expectations, that no asshats attempt to spoil the experience for you (don't let 'em!), and that you arrive to and from safely.

If any U.S. Whitchapel residents live in or near Massachusetts, I would HIGHLY recommend going to see Billy Raygun, Psyched To Die, and The Night Birds in Cambridge on December 5th.

Billy Raygun are extremely catchy, energetic pop-punk from NH, being called one of the best bands around by lots of folks in the pop-punk scene (Jim from The Fake Boys mentioned repeatedly at a recent show that Billy Raygun are 'the best band ever'). It also bears mentioning that these cats aren't even out of high school yet

Psyched to Die and Night Birds each feature ex-members of The Ergs! and Hunchback. PTD are a throwback to Black Flag-era hardcore, and Night Birds are straight-up punky punk punk.

Recently, I saw The Get Up Kids reunited (on Halloween), which was amazing. Haven't caught much else live these days because I've been busy and been hating most music. I'm really burnt out on shows and whatnot, though if Small Brown Bike manage to come to NY I'd be all over that.

I'm just sick of dealing with shit venues in NY (I fucking hate going to Brooklyn) and kids at shows.

I am 100% totally in agreement with you there. too many gigs i´ve been to here in Reykjavik have been spoiled by the "i´m WAAAY to hip to dance/mosh/move" hipster crowd. and then THEY give you the evil eye if you decide to noise things up a bit.

And when they do decide to mosh with their tight jeans/asymmetrical haircuts, it´s fucking hilarious. Then i get involved... ;-)

i used to pit/mosh a lot but suffered a pretty horrible injury at a mastodon gig, so now i only do it when i get really carried away or drunk....

that being said, i fucking hate it when people dick around not doing properly, i don't mind being bashed into by a proper pit or HC dancer but christ, stop just bopping around high fiving and head banging with their arms around each other and fucking MOSH!

I got to see Negative Approach this Saturday, and it may have been the most intense show (barring the ones where there was an actual riot) I've ever been to. Two smaller Hardcore bands opened up, Guilt Trip and Black Sheep Squadron, and both were fine, but the show really started when last minute addition Antidote took the stage. I don't know how well known they are outside of NY, but they're one of those NYHC legends that released one record and then dissolved into other bands. Intense as hell.

Negative Approach were just a force: no banter, no pauses, and John Brannon sounds exactly the same as he did when he was a kid.

Amazing.

Melt Banana and Melt Banana Lite was amazing. Blew me away. People up weren't sure if they want to dance or mosh and flail like epileptics. Some poor guy up front and center kept clutching the front wedge speaker for the whole show, otherwise it would be sent hurling towards the singer as the press of people kept pushing forward. Kudos to him.

I missed Satanized and am now even MORE glad. Eeeyyuch. Not crazy about their music so I wasn't really into catching them.

And yeah, I go to the U of Pennsylvania, so I go to shows when I can. Jonathan Coulton on the third of December (for a TOTALLY different change of pace) at the World Cafe. May go, depending on the boy's band's schedule.

yes. King Khan & BBQ were amazing! the sound that those two create is staggering.
such great performers. always able to insight near riots by just being. i saw three people escorted out by bouncers... which, for most of the shows i see, rarely happens. maybe a few people will get too high or drunk and pass out from the strange frequencies, but rarely is violence a highlight...

i highly recommend these fellows to everyone.

That was one of the last gig's at London's Astoria.

This year they're playing at Shepherd's Bush, and played earlier in the year at Wolverhampton Wulfrun hall

After the Pixies show you could by a 2-disc CD recording of THE SHOW YOU JUST WATCHED. Amazing. Unique. I got, like, #108/1000. $25.

They played all of Doolittle and the B-sides, plus some singles from other albums in the second encore. The second encore is the only thing that changes night to night in their 3 NYC shows, I beleive.

Just got my ticket to see Tortoise locally at an itty bitty bar. Should be great. I've seen them a few times before, and they were honestly the best show I've ever seen ... it was the first time I left a "rock" concert feeling as if I had just seen "musicians," if that makes sense. Not that other bands aren't ... I guess what I'm saying is that I had the same sense of bewilderment I would have had leaving a symphony, or an old jazz band. They are the only band I know of who can have four guys playing one set of huge vibes, and make it rawk. The way they constantly change instruments and roles, and reproduce every sound on the albums ... its impressive. Plus, when you walk into a bar and on stage are 2 big drum sets, both at the very front of the stage, you know its going to kick ass. Show is about a month away; I'll report on its ass-kicking-ness.

Went on a nostalgia trip and saw Kittie at the Academy 3 in Brum on Friday. Last saw them in 1996 in a room much the same size as the one they played this time. Only 150ish people too for a four band line-up for a tenner. Never Forever and Malefice were OK - perhaps weirded out by having to start at 6pm to beat curfew at 10 - but find of the day was metalcore/post-hardcore etc band As I Day Today who had a good gig. The sisters Lander and their compatriot Kittie cats got a few peeps going in a moshpit but it all seemed a bit lacklustre. Full props to bassist Ivy Vujic though. Best whirling hair since early-Jason Newsted :-)

friday i went to a great thrash show, ELDERS had their tape release as the openers for an older crowd drawing stoner/doom band at a dive bar. when they played we brought the dancing and people looked PIIIISED haha

last night i saw this really weird anarcho folk band BLACK BIRD RAUM play at a mini fest. accordian, acoustic guitar, banjo, washboard and stand up washbin bass. no amplification and everyone sang. it wwas surprisingly powerful, and a ton of fun. other bands played too, but they were the best. check it out, they are nice people and on tour heading east from PHX right now.

Saw Glassjaw on sunday.
It was... dissapointing, but I've been waiting to see them for something like 7 years. So that's to be expected. They were still very, very good though,the support bands (Pulled Apart By Horses and Shapes) basically blew them off the stage. So it was still a good night.

The other week I saw Future of the Left/Kong/Chickenhawk faces were very nearly rocked clean off.

The future holds Silver Mt Zion, Errors and Grails. It's going to be a good year.

Was one of about 40,000 people who rocked out to AC/DC last night. Excellent concert. Probably one of the best I've seen and heard. Got Isis, Meshuggah, Amanda Palmer, Converge and the Mountain Goats lined up over the next few months. Stoked that Wellington, the city I consider to be home, is finally getting a good amount of international gigs that I have an interest in seeing. Also seeing Neil Gaiman speak the day after Amanda Palmer. Anybody know what he's like as a speaker?

@joe.distort: I'm surprised that Henry Rollins is expensive. He did a spoken word show last year and it was very well priced (for my part of the world). Weird.

So a couple weeks ago I went to a folk punk/psychobilly/misc minifestival for local Aussie bands. I enjoyed Like...Alaska, whose EP I'd been listening to that week, although I missed half their set through my own fail. Also missed two of the headliners, I was sort of trying to be in two places at once that day. The other bands were pretty decent as well but I couldn't really tell what they were on about because, PSA: The sound system at the Annandale hotel in Sydney? SHIT. REALLY REALLY SHIT, OH MY GOD.

Also I discovered the phenomenon of "skank circles" while attempting to mosh to Los Capitanos, the one ska band with trumpets in the line-up. (They were hilarious and looked like they were having a lot of fun.) I had never heard of this practice, so I was sort of terrified when everybody around me suddenly started running around in jolly flaily circles. That was certainly an experience.

Possibly my favourite bit was when people from some of the bands did mini acoustic sets in the alley outside the pub. This is because I could actually hear them, lol. Jen Buxton from Like...Alaska turned out to be a) my age, b) covered in tattoos and c) adorable, which was sort of depressing, but it was lovely to hear her sing properly. Also Lindsey from Frenzal Rhomb did one, which was hilarious, all of his songs were about necrophilia or black-market baby profits.

Best coliseum show: Neil Young and Crazy Horse (c. 1993) completely destroyed Portland Memorial Coliseum with a take-no-prisioners mission to summon pure Rock and Roll.

Best small venue show: Toots and the Maytals (c 1997) in a small bar, maybe 500 capacity. Toots took the stage and informed us that that night he would be our teacher and we would be his students. He then proceeded to run down his platinum and gold, evoking at turns Bob Marley, Otis Redding and James Brown. He did soulful roots reggae, some more modern dance hall stuff, country roads, 54-46, Monkey Man and did about 45 solid minutes of the God Father of Soul routine where someone leads him off stage but he runs back on for yet another chorus. He tore the roof off the motha' and everyone there that night got advanced degrees.

Best virtuoso: David Grisman just about any time I've seen him play -- a bit of a bluegrass diva if there is such a thing, but an amazing talent.

This was my second time seeing Fucked Up, the first time being the secret show during the Pitchfork festival last year. I'd go into more hardcore v. indie antagonism, but I think I was a little too bitchy and precious in the previous post. Instead, positivity: Fucked Up is unique and sprawling in a way that somehow makes sense within the constraints of the genre. They've got great songs getting played to a wider audience. I'm excited about that and I hope more kids get into it, with more stage diving and kids hugging and singing along with Damian.

Also: Fucked Up has a song on the new GZA record and is doing a split with NOFX, according to Damian, in person, so who knows how true that is.

The opener was Kurt Vile. Honestly, painful to listen to.

So I have now been to a Rock Festival! Melbourne Soundwave, it was pretty great! Insane hot, but I anticipated this and wore a bra that would not be awkward if I had to take my shirt off. What I did not anticipate was getting the flu the day before I flew to melbourne :/ I then infected all my friends and it was generally sniffly and ridiculous. Still rocked out though! I have been bizarrely mesmerised by AFI. I never particularly loved their music and still don't, just not a vocal style I like, but GODDAMMIT their live shows are great!

And I got to see Placebo and the Weakerthans <3 some of my favourites. Also The Creepshow, which is a little Canadian psychobilly band I quite like.

Last night I saw Pavement's first gig together in 10 years. It was amazing. Malkmus had destroyed his voice, he fell over a bit, Spiral Stairs guitar sounded like it was trying to violate Steve Albini for the first few songs. They played for two hours. Meshuggah gig last night. Good gig, but not great. Meshuggah wern't as intense on-stage as I had hoped, and didn't do an encore (as far as I am aware - they better not have!), but the music was good, as was the pit: hot, sweaty, aggressive. Came out drenched in sweat with some energy worked off. Nice. Was also introduced to an NZ band, Fornax Chemica, who play a pretty sweet brand of instrumental post-rock/metal.

I haven't gone to a concert in a while now (a while for me really isn't that long, I go to concerts a lot). Last I saw I was Amanda Palmer at San Diego Comic-Con, which was fucking fantastic. Last before that was Fleetwood Mac, and Motley Crue before that, so it was really nice having a change from a huge stadium concert to a smaller, more personal venue. I love both, though, very different feels. The smaller venues, on one hand, can feel so much more connected, but I feel like at times if you've just gotten into that musician's work, you can also feel outside of the loop as all the other fans are connecting. The huge venues don't always have that community feeling, but because of that it's easier to go and just have your own little experience. I am a tad sad though at not having seen a live symphony for a couple years now. I used to always see a few of those per year.

Saw Amanda Palmer Friday night (on a side note: saw Neil Gaiman speak early evening yesterday. He was, coincidentally, really interesting) and Converge last night. Amanda Palmer was good. Quite witty stage banter, but you pretty much got the feeling that all she really wanted to do was smooch with Gaiman. Converge were also good. Pretty interesting up on stage: lots of movement, encourage a lot of audience participation (stage was only waist high or so and it was a fairly small club) and still spout some of the same old hardcore cliches. Pretty sweet gig. Crowd was very much a hardcore crowd (as opposed to metal), which was a little disappointing to me, as I prefer metal crowds here in NZ: there's more physicality but less flailing about which means there's less chance of an eye being poked or elbowed or being kicked in the head (heaps of crowd surfing and stage diving last night). I discovered, however, that the vast majority of my friends into metal had no idea who Converge is, which really surprised me, and was also a bit of a bummer as I had a spare ticket I was trying to give away, at short notice admittedly, and nobody would take it. Been a great weekend though.

Went to see Astronautalis/Dessa/P.O.S last Wednesday night, with surprise opener F.Stokes. Hip-hop for the indie/alternative crowd (not to mention some of the best rap/hip-hop material being recorded these days), with F.Stokes being more on the traditional side of the genre, and Astronatalis being on the more indie/experimental side. Dessa and P.O.S. are somewhere in the middle, hailing from Minnesota's highly innovative Doomtree rap collective. It's worth noting that their DJ, Plain Ol' BIll, was absolutely killing it all night. Dude can scratch like nobody's business.

I almost didn't go, because I hate going to shows alone, but fortunately a buddy of mine decided to come with me. The show was incredible, and I'm planning on seeing P.O.S. again next month when he hits the East Coast opening for Brand New.

Saw Ted Leo & the Pharmacists last Wednesday at the FUC, which was totally awesome. Then I saw Dr. Dog on Friday for the WXPN Free at Noon concert series so not only were they free, but they played the regular thirty five minute set that was broadcast, and then they stuck around for forty five minutes taking requests. They basically looked like they were having the most fun ever so even though I'm not tremendously familiar with their catalog, I had a wonderful time. Plus I was pretty near the front. Plus I ran into the drummer the next day at a music fest (they're from West Philly) and he remembered me from the day before. And then I got to see Double Dagger, the Extraordinaires, These United States, Birds of Maya, and a whole bunch of other bands at said fest.

The Goats were great as usual, I love how excited John Darnielle gets on stage... he is just going :D:D:D all show. just saw Them Crooked Vultures last night! Fucking HEAVY but the crowd was DEAD. I do not fucking understand L.A. concert goers. They're too insecure and afraid to jump and slam into each other and get into it. They just stood there while I banged my head to every song. At least the short girl to my left was getting into it, chick on my right stood there like a statue like everyone else. W T F!?
Lots of old people and white boys who look like Weezer wannabes or someshit. I think they just wanted to gawk at the ONE guy who happened to be in Led Zeppelin (John Paul Jones). Actually overheard a guy who said he only heard maybe 2 QOTSA songs. I dunno, real pussy crowd, sorry. I like my rock shows with some god damn danger. Then again it was Club Nokia, the stank of corporate greed was everywhere. Event staff assholes at every turn (i had a spot right in the pit, but i went to get another beer and they wouldn't let me back in. and it wasn't even full yet, all cuz i didn't have some bullshit blue wristband!), and even bathroom attendants! Geez.
Anyway, I still enjoyed finally seeing my favorite band. But I gotta get my ass to a rowdier show soon to gets some real action. What is wrong with people...

PS: Dave Grohl beating the shit out of his drums was hypnotic and every beat poured right into my ears. The man is the Thor of drummers

I went to see Jamie Cullum with my wife here in Edinburgh. I appreciated his music, but I wouldn't have gone to the concert if she hadn't insisted. The concert was an absolute delight and invigorated me more than I thought possible by a "mere concert". It was irreverent, fun and done with so much love, it was like a form of mental medicine, and I now have a newfound admiration for that little man.

I recommend to anyone who's enjoyed his music in the past to check his concerts out.

Just saw Elvis Costello this evening at the Peppermill Casino in Reno, NV. It was a good show, but we were sort of all the way in the back (not a huge place, but still hard to see much without looking at the giant screens projecting various shots of the stage...), and drinks were CRAZY expensive... Also, sort of the most nondescript venue ever. It's a ballroom, or something, but the stage was really plain, with just a curtain backdrop - and that's it. So it must have seemed really weird for him and his band up there on this large stage with barely anything on it and nothing behind them...

Anyway, he played all his usual songs. I like Elvis Costello music, and I like listening to it on purpose quite often (as opposed to just liking it when it comes on the radio, or whatever...), but there was such an odd disconnect in going to see him at this concert. Mainly because he was so far away, but also because we were just sitting there in these uncomfortable chairs, and everyone in the place had decided on sitting, so there was only a little dancing up towards the stage which security would break up every few songs. So it wasn't like going to a packed club and feeling the energy. I sort of just felt like I was watching it on tv, especially since I've recently seen a few episodes of his Spectacle show... So, good, not great...

Just returned from my very first live Boris experience. Aaaaaahhh! Sweet, sweet noise. Great mix of material and decent sound. They know how to wield feedback, those Borisians. Slightly unappreciative crowd though. Lots of talking through the quieter early stuff which is guaranteed to grind my gears.

@JiveKitty I was dragged to a Nile gig a few months ago, it not really being my cup of tea either. I enjoyed it though. The drummer's stunning and the music's generally tight has hell. They bore the arse off me on record though. I imagine as long as the sound's decent you'll get something out of it.

A good local beer was on a discount which made it less expensive than Pabst Blue Ribbon (which people still bought anyway???), and I got there just in time to watch DEAD TO ME rip it up San Francisco style (for those not in the know, it means three chords, very quickly, keep songs under 3 minutes if at all possible) and not play Visiting Day.

LAWRENCE ARMS, on the other hand, I don't want to describe with words now, but they played the hits (and started with Presenting the Incredible Dancing Machine!) while Brendan tried to slur out something about how it was great that we were all here in support of the two women who got beat up with bats. The atmosphere felt warm and not because of the sold out show. Packed house, with everyone I remember ever from the city's punk rock scene in the venue. Around 2/3s of the TLA set I realized I was hating the ground for being so damn stable. The encore was 100 Resolutions and Like A Record Player, dedicated to Chicago.

So: Huge success.

A couple of months ago I saw Immortal live in brooklyn. They are even more icy, grim and brutal in person than in their recordings. It was quite a show.

The best show I've ever been to was last august when I saw the incomparable Motorhead. Nobody has ever rocked anywhere near as hard as they do, and that is sure not about to change. They tore the place apart, and being in the presence of the demigod Lemmy was a quite overpowering experience.

yeah, there was some fun posing and Abbath said funny stuff in between songs. Immortal is one of the best examples to cite in my dedication to the artistic principle that something can be silly or even ridiculous and still be incredibly awesome. They're one of my favorite metal bands and it was fantastic to see them ply their trade, and Abbath's sense of humor made the dark music all the better.

Went and saw A Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra and Tra-La-La Band recently - absolute blinder! Not exactly the sort of music you can get up and jive to, but believe me there was some heavy-duty, hardcore swaying and zoned-out staaaring going on.

Plus, it was worth the price of admission alone to hear Efrim intoning 'Fuck Moby' at several points during the evening. Wittier things were said, but I'll settle for straight-to-the-point sweariness any day.

Wow, it's been crazy slogging through the last ten pages of this thread. So much good music people are seeing live...

I'm pretty sated, I got to see two of my favourite Japanese acts do their things in incredibly different environments. Tokyo Jihen (Shiina Ringo's band project, for those who know her) put on a great, impeccably stage-managed show in an all seater theatre where no-one sat down, and like 80% of the crowd had logo flags to wave, and when encouraged to clap along 95% of the crowd did so. Helluva band though, crazy tight.

I saw Mukai Shutoku playing solo in a dingy basement venue that was so packed out that people were standing all the way up the entrance stairs, and he just sat there chain-drinking beer getting progressively drunker and bashing out awesome songs that only occasionally lent themselves to single guitar arrangements. He's kinda Japanese indie royalty - the brains behind Number Girl and Zazen Boys, which are both just insanely good bands, and that I could stand there and be all like - woah this is that one single he did with his first band - gave me something of a geek buzz.

i want to see SIN ORDEN, a great latino thrash band from southside chicago, tomorrow but all the shows at the space its at have been really weak and poorly attended lately. i almost dont want to see a boring show since it will dilute my feelings about their badass los crudos-esque recordsings. hmmmm

Late to the party, but I caught The Brain Jonestown Massacre on May 29th. I was very impressed. If anyone if real familiar with them, it was the first tour Matt Hollywood has been on with them since 1998 when, as seen in the documentary "DIG!" he quit the band. Sadly for them, there was maybe 300 people in attendance, but that is really kind of to be expected. It is a rarity I get to see a show seeing as almost all my favorite artists are 60+ years old!

Saw the Black Keys last night! Fairly shoddy sound unfortunatly, the roundhouse doesn't lend itself to..well much really. Haven't heard a good gig there yet. Band on fire though, not sure about the inclusion of live bass and keys on the new tracks. Some sounded pretty good, but the older stuff with just the two of them brought the house down. The tone Dan Auerbach wrestles from his gear is jaw droppingly filthy.

Saw Touche Amore on Monday in a basement. I remember only ragged moments and snatches of songs, but everyone in the room was screaming out the chorus to Honest Sleep, while the singer was climbing on heating pipes hoisted on the arms of the sweat soaked crowd.

Di'anno (the vocalist on Iron Maiden's first two albums) was way better than expected! He was a lot more versatile than I realised. It was a fun gig. Go and see him if you can. And the support act we did see, Razorwyre, were a combination of cheese and fun - sometimes too cheesy, but very amusing on stage. If you get the chance to see Razorwyre, do it: at worst you'll have a smile on your face at their stage presence and how cheesy they are.

Dalek was alright, but I'm more interested in their recorded stuff than their live stuff. Live it was just the same old rap routine: guy with a mic, guy with a laptop, nothing particularly notable. The stuff I've heard online is much more interesting.

Tool? Hands down the best concert I've ever been to, compared to three other Tool shows, two Type O Negative shows, two Strapping Young Lad shows, and two U2 shows. (Yes, yes, I know. Ugh. U2. Seriously amazing shows.) Every time I see them, the people smoking weed get closer and closer. This time they were right next to us. Next time I expect they'll be sitting on my lap. It's not that it's bad most of the time, but some of use have to get on a plane tomorrow, and that smell doesn't come off easily.

I did a bit of live twittering during the show, but I'm planning on fleshing it out into a full review at some later point. Probably, y'know, on the plane.

Last night i attended an open air concert titled "inspired by Iceland"

Several artists, both local and international, were involved. A webcast and videos were made and you can see them here....

The international artists playing were Damien rice (yuk) Glen Hansard (who?) and Spiritualized Acoustic Mainline (much better). Overall it was a bit meh Way too much touristcore muszak and the really good artists were on pre-recorded videos that only people watching the webcast could see. Also it rained.... a lot.....

Delayed entry, but I caught Ween in Chicago on the 25th. It was my 9th Ween experience. The sound was terrible, but it was a loose and very enjoyable show. Way too hot. High point was busting out a cover of "Let's Dance". I do not reccomend the Aragon Ballroom. The shitty sound and hassle getting there is making my chances of making the trek to catch Iggy Pop there less likely.

A little disappointed I missed a decent amount of the show due to a combination of socialising, expecting a later start and at least one support act. I saw Lady Gaga last night at Madison Square Gardens. She puts on an incredible show; equal parts Madonna, Andy Warhol, and Cher, with a little GWAR and Wendy O. Williams thrown into the mix. It’s as much an extremely high-end performance art piece as a concert, and I can’t help but think of how infinitely better the work of Haus of Gaga is than most of the junk in the last Whitney Biennial. The music is good, but the art is what really makes Lady Gaga so great. In a time when some fine art needs to be labeled “NO ESTA BASURA” to keep the janitors from throwing it out at night it’s wonderful to see a team of artists putting on a wild show that everyone in the house can connect with.

I flew out to Austin, TX two years ago for the second reunion show for The Murder City Devils.
The night before their scheduled performance the band had a secret show at the Mohawk. My girlfriend had become friends with Leslie over their mutual love of dogs and Leslie brought us into the venue well before it was due to open for the night. My girl and I sat at a picnic table drinking beers while we watched the Devils warm up with a few songs. Afterward we drank with the band before the Mohawk opened to the general public. We watched the rest of the show from an upper patio which led into a VIP room. One of my best show experiences.
I've seen them a few times since that night but much of the magic has dissipated.

well last night i returned from Neskaupastaður and the Eistnaflug festival. I am still a little hungover and my body is COVERED in bruises. My legs in particular look like discoloured mince.

Most of the metal there was of the best and loudest quality, but man NAPALM DEATH were something else! It must have been one of the most brutal, Punishing moments of music i have ever experienced in a Loooong time.

On Saturday the event culminated in a lovely bonding session with a couple of friends in a quiet garden area overlooking the Fjörd with some magic mushrooms. And at the same time, me trying to tell them about the scene in Planetary with Elijah Snow taking psychedelics and going down to a subatomic level, and everyone going "woah!! that Warren Ellis guy sounds like a great man!" And i just said Yes he is....

You were right. 4 bands played before BANE, all of them the same kind of LETS SEE SOME MOVEMENT ON THE FLOOR bands. The response for those bands was unreal, I will say. Two fights broke out, with one ending in blood on the floor and as soon as the two combatants were separated, 10 or 20 kids stood around the blood and took pictures of it with their iPhones.

BANE was fun as always, and they seemed really invigorated by the big, positive non/fighty response from the crowd (most of the gorillas left after TRAPPED UNDER ICE, who played a mercifully brief set.)

Caught The Sword, Fear Factory and Metallica in Melbourne last week. It was a good gig although the crowd didn't seem as expressive as one you'd get at a metal gig in NZ (shit, people got away with heels in the standing area down by the stage - fucked up! - we only managed to get seated tickets). Only caught the end of The Sword but their weak point as on the records of theirs I've heard is the vocalist: he's just not very good. Fear Factory and Metallica were pretty damn good.

Money's tight at the moment but Grouper's playing in my home town (Wellington) next week and the gig's very cheap so I hope to get to that, as well as - pending money - Low and Sage Francis next month. Anyone know how any of these artists are live?

I'm finally on a concert kick again. Yay!

I saw Phoenix with Neon Indian a couple weeks ago. I don't consider myself a Phoenix fan, but my mom got free tickets, so I went. I ended up LOVING Neon Indian, who opened for them, and who I had never heard of before then. They made the trip totally worth it. Phoenix played well, and while I only really dug a couple of songs, their lighting was fantastic.

About a week ago I saw the Pixies and Fuck Buttons. I mostly went for Fuck Buttons, during which the crowd was in "WTF" mode as most people ahd never heard of them and wasn't quite sure why there was a band tinkering with electronics and lacking in "real" instruments. They were amazing. Pixies played really well and i had a blast watching them, but DAMN did that crowd smell bad. It was seriously the worst smelling pit I've ever been in, and I've been in a lot.

A few nights ago I saw Murderdolls, Alice Cooper, and Rob Zombie. Best show I've been to in a while. It'd been a good while since I've been to a proper metal concert, and all three of these acts KILLED it. Murderdolls were a lot of fun, Alice died like four different times (he usually just does one death), and I got to touch Rob Zombie. It was amazing.

Monday night was Kylesa/Torche/High on Fire in a room that held about 300 people. It melted my face.

Kylesa opened, and while the crowd was a bit thin that early, they were supportive. The band, for their part, played like it was sold out. I'd never seen them before and they were spot-on live. Torche put a grin on every face with their bliss-metal shenanigans. By the end of their set, the drums were everywhere, the drummer had jumped into the crowd, and the bassist tossed his bass into the front rows, so we got to play with his ultra downtuned strings and make a terrible ruckus.

High on Fire. There aren't words. Matt Pike is not human; he is not made of 73% water like the rest of us, he is made of 10% bong resin and 90% pure metal. They put on one of the top 3 loudest shows I've ever seen, and every minute of it was top-notch. The rhythm section is relentless and Matt can shoot a snot-rocket midsong without missing a note. Now that's metal.

I got a headbutt to the nose, more bruises than I can count, and I left ecstatic, revived by the power of heavy music.

when that tour came to AZ it was up north in the small college town of Flagstaff...then HOF broke down so the show was cancelled. my friends drove up there, got the news (this was the day after we did our los angeles run so there was no way i was doing another road trip) and called Kylesa. on tours like that, if the show gets cancelled the openers make no money, so KYLESA and TORCHE played a solo show.

FNM woulda made my year but I want my favorite bands to move forward and not be a reunited nostalgia act...really like the Palladium tho. They light that place so it feels like your outside in the night time.

Just got back from a two-night Einstürzende Neubauten extravaganza in London. Bloody fantastic.

The first night was a "standard" Einstürzende Neubauten gig inthe HMV Forum. The second night was in the much smaller (and more personal) venue of the Relentless Garage, and consisted of an Einstürzende Neubauten set of rarer and never-played-live-before tracks, sets from a couple of spin-off projects, and various films.

Looks like footage of the 2nd night is already surfacing on YouTube, including this clip of Einstürzende Neubauten playing Seele Brennt:

All this weekend i attended and reviewed the Iceland Airwaves music Festival for the Reykjavik Grapevine. It was a pretty hectic furious weekend. Both Partying very hard and trying to ensure i handed in my review copy at the same time. At one point i was half slouched in front of the work PC at 4am mainling vodka out of the bottle, while describing a band as causing the crowd to metastisize into a singe cancerous mass with weird looking orifices (a bit like the climax to the Horror film society)

Here were some highlights

- Watching Mount Kimbie and James Blake. Mount Kimbie were excellent, but young mr Blake was possibly on of the best DJ sets i've heard in the last few years. some of the stuff he was sampling was pretty much "out there". And i was lucky enough to get drunk with them on Saturday while they did an impromptu DJ set at my Local, Bakkus.

- Watching the best of Icelandic Rock on Thursday night. Fist Fokkers, kimono, Reykjavik!, Ensimi, S.H. Draumur & HAM played some of the best, intense rock that was a pleasure to hear.

- Seeing Ghostigital. Complete psychotic mess and lots of screaming from Ex-sugarcube frontman Einar Örn Benediktsson

Went to see the Smashing Pumpkins on Saturday, supported by our local City Riots. The gig was slightly underwhelming for the following reasons: a) none of my friends had deigned to come with me, b) I had forgotten my earplugs and thus found the front section intolerable by the halfway mark, partly because c) the fucking sound techs had decided that the knob which REALLY ought to go up to eleven was the one marked REEEEEEEVERRRRRRRB and d) it cost me goddamn $80 and I don't even like the Pumpkins as much as bands I regularly pay $20-50 for.

That aside, the bands themselves put on a top-notch show beneath the disco-ball windmills adorning the stage. In particular both drummers were absolutely on and the vibration was beautiful (admittedly it was also the only thing that couldn't be fucked up by the goddamn reverb). The crowd was also excellent, which is why probably the most disappointing thing was forgetting the earplugs -- I rarely go to shows that big, so I'd forgotten that they calibrate them for volume at the back -- because it has been ages since I've been in a tight friendly mosh and I didn't get to enjoy this one because I had to fuck off out of it like four songs into the Pumpkins' set lest I actually die.

Why don't venues sell earplugs? They've got bloody everything else at rip-off prices, I'd have bought them ten times over.

Surprisingly, I had more fun watching TRAPPED UNDER ICE here than I did in the US. I think it was because I wasn't in danger of getting my face beaten in by douchebags. I mean, yes, it's still tough guy "world is a vampire we've gotta stay cold" genre stuff, but there was something endearing about the vocalist this time around.

Got a gig tomorrow I'm really excited about - Vom / The Cosmic Dead / Xavier & The Bastard / NOMA. The Cosmic Dead is excellent droney / doomy stuff featuring one of the dudes from my old local record shop in Stirling. First time in about six months I've had a chance to go see him play, so well excited. No idea what Vom and Xavier & The Bastard are like, but last time I saw NOMA (playing alongside The Radiation Line, record shop guy's other band) his performance used the body of a bass guitar run through masses of distortion pedals and "played" using the interference from mobile phones and laptops. Genuinely brilliant, even if I did have to leave the room at one point because the high frequencies were starting to get painful.

If any Whitechapelers (Whitechapelites?) are in Glasgow and like that sort of thing, come along and say hi. I'll be the skinny guy with long hair, a huge military jacket and a Cigarette of Victory t-shirt.

Went to my first Gwar show last night :D It was a of fun, but by the the most crushing I've experienced in any pit ever. Though I think this had less to do with the fact that it was Gwar and more to do with the fact that the House of Blues in San Diego is a teeny tiny venue (okay, it's also Gwar's fault - everyone wants to be right up front in the blood splash zone). It also doesn't help that the floor gets all slippery with the fake blood. BUT, lots of fun, regardless. It's definitely somewhat boggling going to a metal show where most of the crowd are wearing white shirts instead of black, and very entertaining being able to tell how close or far people were to the stage based on how red their shirt has gotten. I definitely recommend seeing part of the show up front by the stage and part of the show from the back of the room. It's hard to see how ridiculous and cool their costumes are when you're constantly being sprayed in the face with blood.

after seeing MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE play an 800 person theater 2 hours away, i swore i would never go see them again as that was as good as it was going to get for a band of that size. ive seen them in arenas, and that is something i will never put up with again. ugh. then i find out the tour for KILLJOYS is ending a 20 minute train ride from home, at a 1000 person venue...shit. looks like i am going again! now my main worry is that they bring an opener on tour that isnt horrendous.

That was one badass show. The rundown:

Daisycutter - Local powerviolence. Good but not spectacular.

Coffinworm - Local black/death/whatever metal. First time I'd ever seen them, despite living nearby and owning their record. Anyhow, they were great. They've got their shit together; the band is tight and nasty, and the singer has a definite stage presence. They know how to work an audience.

Phobia - Didn't show up, something about logistical problems. My guess is the ridiculous arctic weather we had to brave to get there ourselves.

Goatwhore - Saw them once about five years ago, and now they're even more unhinged and relentless. You can tell that these guys are metal veterans, because it looks as natural as breathing when they do it. Ended the show with Apocalyptic Havoc from their new album and the place fucking exploded. (Also got midsong fistbump from Ben Falgoust. \m/)

Eyehategod - Jesus, what can you say? They have like a twenty year reputation of nihilism, brutality and desperation, and they do not disappoint. They're absolutely beastly live. They constantly waver on the border of perfect sync and completely collapsing. If you slow down the sound of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, I'm pretty sure it sounds like an Eyehategod song.

Caught the No Sleep Til tour on the Auckland leg. It was good, although the sound quality wasn't overly impressive. That's probably reflective of the short turnover between most of the bands. Unfortunately missed 3 Inches of Blood, but Katatonia put on a good set, Gwar were a lot of fun, and Parkway Drive sounded like a good band but we only caught the end of their set as we had to conserve energy to get through the day (3am starts, 8 - 9 hour drives, etc). Dropkick Murphys got the crowd impressively amped although that may have been because a lot of the crowd was only there to see them. NOFX were, unfortunately for a band I had high hopes for while not having heard any of their music, terrible: they seemed to be having technical issues initially but they were obnoxious (in an unfunny way - wit, how the fuck does that work?) and appeared to only be capable of playing two songs. They were also badly scheduled as they played after the Dropkick Murphys amped the crowd up and before Megadeth who were extremely tight live and put on a good show. I rate them as better live than Slayer (although in part that's because Araya's voice is shot) while still behind Metallica.

Last night we saw Prince at Madison Square Garden. It was a top notch show. Graham Central Station did a great opener, especially when you consider that Larry Graham has played something like five big shows in the last two decades. Prince did a very tight set with a small band and some backup singers. The musicianship was flawless and Prince can still sing like a castrated angel. We lucked out and he only took one break and he let Sheila E. cover for him, which was damned incredible. If you have a chance to go to one of the January shows then do it. And maybe we’ll all luck out and he’ll take this show on the road.

I originally was gonna see them on new year's eve in San Fransisco but those plans fell through and I'm staying in San Diego, which works for me because Jason Webley opens for them for that show. On January 5th I got to see Murder by Death do a show at Russian Recording here in Bloomington, IN. Since it's a small recording studio, the tickets were limited to 150, and the show was broadcast live on local radio. Very cool show, and a full band performance with high energy for such a small room. The opener was Dreamers of the Ghetto who are highly recommended if you dig dreamy, gothy, post-punk type stuff.

Sunday night is the Fences/Cheap Girls/Against Me! show. I've been a fan of AM! for a long time, and while their newest album didn't quite floor me, I'm hoping they still put on a good show in the tiny storefront venue here in town.

On Monday I took my friend D., who's about to go into the Peace Corps, to see Prince at Madison Square Garden. I think we were both quite honestly enjoying the bad beer more than the show; I'd seen the purple guy before in a much more intimate setting that was more about the music than the spectacle and D. is much more into old school hip-hop and underground club music. The opener was Cee Lo Green; D. suspected seeing him was going to give him some massive cool points with all the early 20-somethings he's about to spend two years with in Zambia, even if Cee Lo sang "Forget You" instead of "Fuck You." Still, an enjoyable evening if only because D. insisted on buying all the drinks before, during, and after the show and managed to get me thoroughly shitfaced for work the next day.

Still recovering from Flogging Molly last night at the House of Blues here in Houston. Scored free VIP tickets through the job (total retail, I saved about $350 for the seven of us that I got in). Felt fancy going through the red carpet and seperate entrance with private elevator into the "Foundation Room" where the price of the drinks made up for the free tickets. Had enough whisky, that although I can tell you I enjoyed the concert, as I always do when I see Flogging Molly, I can't give you any specifics. I will say this; any time I see a band I halfway am interested in seeing at House of Blues, I'm taking as many people as I can and using the shit out of the free tickets deal we have.

Last great gig I went to was on boxing night. I'm from a small town on the North coast of Ireland, and about 150 were packed into a room with no stage to watch a relatively new-formed punk band from the area. Now I review a lot of gigs in Belfast, so had recently been feeling "Gigged-out" so to speak.

But sweet Jesus what a night. Loud, heavy anarchic. Tons of fun.

Had to get the train back to Belfast the next morning, severly beaten, reeking of whiskey and smiling like a cheshire cat.

I saw Today Is The Day in Glasgow a few days back, which was the best show nobody ever saw!

I don't really get it. They're a pretty well known and quite influential and critically appreciated band, they just seem to have no fans despite great albums and a ferociously intense live show. Last I saw them (2008 maybe) they played to about 20 people, this time to maybe 15. Of course, it didn't help that they came on stage at 10:50! Still, a short but ridiculously heavy set ensued.

Had a wee chat with Steven Austin beforehand, he was a really nice guy and friendly as can be. I know other bands have played prisons, but there's something about their distinctive brand of metal and an Icelandic prison that makes that sound really interesting!

Crippled Black Phoenix, supported by Teeth of the Sea - The Lexington, Pentonville Road, Wednesday 13th April:

Stunning gig. Both bands have a post-rock feel, but do their own thing around that. Teeth of the Sea, who I'd never heard before, did a strong short set with a lot of panache. Crippled Black Phoenix, who I only got into the week before, blew me away.

Got to go see Band of Horses and the Avett Brothers the other week during the Savannah Music Festival. The Avett Brothers put on a phenomenal show and are a must see. The Band Of Horses, whom I usually adore, sort of flopped it. It made me a sad panda.

Almost forgot -- I had to bail out of Bonaroo due to some inconvenient deadlines, but my brother and sister in law are going and I am sick with envy.

Saw Femi Kuti and the Positive Force in Toronto last night. The sound was horrible and they opened with new material I don't think they had quite mastered yet then suddenly the sound board got it's act together and so did the band and ultimately the dance floor. They ripped for over 3 hours with only 1brief intermission.

Femi also gave us a lecture about sex. He said "don't cum too fast" and " when you're about to cum, REVERSE BACK!" well here let Femi tell you himself ( sex speech approx 1:30 minute )

Honestly, it was a bit hit and miss. I'm chalking that up to it being the first night and the shitty sound system. It seemed like the band couldn't hear each other at several points.

I will say this, the singer (I believe her name is Carol Hodge) he's touring with who does all the Joy and Eve stuff is phenomenal. Totally riveting.

And of course, Ignorant is just charming as hell.

SHAI HULUD in Rome was lovely. I didn't realize how much I missed those songs until I felt the hair on my arms stand up during "...Colonizers of Dreams" and "Set Your Body Ablaze."

In a bit of circularity that only Joe and I recognize, I accidentally bit the singer's hand during "To Bear the Brunt of Many Blades," which I apologized for afterwards and it turns out he liked it, as it reminded him of the times when the same thing would happen to him when he saw Shai Hulud as a fan himself.

Saw MCR last Friday. Second time seeing them. This time they played the Palladium. I've never seen such a huge line, apparently kids were camping out. I haven't seen that kind of dedication since NIN's final shows in LA. It was really fucking rowdy in the pit and I survived a good 97% of their set before getting the fuck out of there. I kept getting singled out in the crowd by d-bags for some reason. Maybe cuz I was a little tall looking in that crowd of short girls. My ribs finally recovered. Anyway, it fucking rocked.

I love flannel, and wear it, too. It was the combination of the look that did it for me. Flannel, beanie, a very specific style of glasses, and a tall can of PBR (though not many beards, actually). It was like if grunge became hipster. I'm not trying to shit on the people, it just wasn't quite the look I was expecting when I went since all my personal friends that are Boris fans tend to sport the more traditional metal look.

The Minneapolis show. As a bonus I really, really like Kristoff Krane a ton. Part of it I think is the fact that I can relate to a lot of the shit he's saying/singing. If you don't know anything about him I'd recommend at least previewing "Hunting For Father" a bit; one of my favorite albums that came out that year.

And Sage's "LI(F)E" -- which came out the same year -- is as close as anyone's ever come to blending Hip-Hop with Americana.

The Ghost/Mastodon/Opeth show was last night here at the Sony Centre in Toronto. I like Mastodon and I'm becoming a big fan of Opeth, but Ghost stole the show. Holy crap. its been a slow year for me with shows...not a lot of bands coming through that i like + my overall jadedness towards shows/ the social bullshit + trying to keep myself out of booze-fueled situations has cut down on a bunch for me.

my birthday weekend featured the back to back punch of ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD playing a party for my friends venues 8th anniversary on friday plus MENZINGERS on saturday was a fucking blast though. as much as i like horrendous cacaphonies of grind violence, sometimes a show where you can just sing along with everyone is the best thing.

DEEP SLEEP i would assume is a fun time, i havent seen them but i saw a few of their labelmates who ruled hard, esepcially LIFE TRAP who arent too hot recorded but fucking killed it live.

the only thing on the horizon for me is CEREMONY who is playing right after Phx COmic con and right before i leave town for a few days aka Awesome Week. excited but worried because i dont like the new record from the half ive heard. although ive seen some recent set lists and it appears they are playing a good mix, so we shall see. havent heard CODE ORANGE KIDS yet, but my buddy w similar tastes told me they are great. need to check it out

Damn, I wish I had endeavored to see Ceremony when they were in Oakland. They're from very close to me (Rohnert Park is 15 minutes north of my hometown, and happens to be where my university is located). I bailed from taking transit over only to sit in traffic for 2 hours trying to get out of SF. Shoulda gone the other direction and seen the show.

Hammers of Misfortune last night who were TIGHT AS FUCK (and the new singer, not Scalzi, is still really fucking good). Saw Mike Scheidt do a solo set on Saturday. Took photos for both for Brooklyn Vegan.

ALSO saw Future of the Left a while back who were FUCKING INCREDIBLE. Oh and I saw them two nights in a row. Fo' free. YEAH DAS RIGHT.

i dont really post a lot on here anymore since it moves so slow but heres a video where i stomp across the stage from last time CEREMONY was here. shit was waaaay better than i expected after that new record, but they only played 3 songs off of it, and covered good stuff from their entire catalog

Saw that TERROR/BANE tour that came through. BANE needs to play new songs. I ended up telling Bedard my Phonogram story and he laughed, which was good.

Two days later I saw PLANES MISTAKEN FOR STARS and they, well, Gared got a little too drunk, but by the time Spring Divorce came on, I lost my shit. Seeing them again reminded me just how cathartic those songs are in a live setting.

Oh and seeing CEREMONY is always the right decision. Even when it's a Tuesday and they're playing a gig with a tall stage and barrier.

Saw GWAR For the first time last night, at Harpos in Detroit, MI. It: was awesome.

I went in wearing a white hooded sweater, came out wearing a pink and blue hooded sweater. The rest of the fake blood and green demon spunk took two showers to fully wash off, and my dry, cracked hands now look like prosthetics from a horror movie. Pure awesome.

Also, Cancer Bats, and Devil Driver opened and they were okay. Surprisingly many Devil Driver fans, as The Pit was pretty serious the whole set. Also, Dez said something like, "Thanks for your energy Detroit!" Which made me chuckle, like, maybe other crowds were less enthusiastic?

Really Good Times, especially given it was a spur of the moment old friend calling me up to go sort of thing.
