Flogging Molly is coming to Houston in early March, and I think I'm going, but then again, I also want to go see William Shatner at the end of March. I might only be able to pull off one. Tempting.
Sweet MOTHER OF PEARL. I went and saw Ghost last night in San Francisco. Incredible show. If you have not heard of Ghost they are sort of a satanic Blue Oyster Cult. I did a little write up on Lioncorn HERE.
holy shit the cover of the record came to life there?
ZOLA JESUS was pretty boring, if i must say. it had a lot less of the haunting weirdness i was hoping for. not bad musically, but somone else there said it was 'more sultry, less abrasive' so that kinda sums up how excited i was. i ate a fantastic slow roasted pork burrito, that then made me pretty ill. score.
Man, Ghost was so much fun. Yes, they signed on to open for Opeth and Mastadon for a 31 city tour. I will go see them in Oakland in late April. I think they are going to blow up. Here's another pic:
@ Oneiros- I was just gonna say... that Ghost/Opeth/Mastodon show will be a fucking trip.
Hey I don't know if anyone knows who Sage Francis is, but this is pretty much the only show I'm going to for a while on account of being busy as hell:
The Minneapolis show. As a bonus I really, really like Kristoff Krane a ton. Part of it I think is the fact that I can relate to a lot of the shit he's saying/singing. If you don't know anything about him I'd recommend at least previewing "Hunting For Father" a bit; one of my favorite albums that came out that year.
And Sage's "LI(F)E" -- which came out the same year -- is as close as anyone's ever come to blending Hip-Hop with Americana.
SeƱor Francis was one of my very favorites in high school/early college. I kind of lost track of him, but I'm glad to hear that album was good! Gonna check it out!
About to see Julie Christmas tonight. YESSSSSSSS. THere will be pictures.
ive got DEAFHEAVEN on saturday a family BBQ with 90s ska bands VOODOOGLOWSKULLS, BUCK-O-NINE and GOLD FINGER in two weeks then the MENZINGERS/SIDEKICKS on my birthday weekend
The Ghost/Mastodon/Opeth show was last night here at the Sony Centre in Toronto. I like Mastodon and I'm becoming a big fan of Opeth, but Ghost stole the show. Holy crap. I wish they'd played for longer than just a half-hour, but that half-hour was something special. I'll be doing up a blog post for work tomorrow and then I'll probably write up a longer post on my own blog focusing on Ghost, but wow -- I think Ghost is about to become my new music obsession. Here's one of the few decent shots I got:
We were third row centre for this. Couldn't believe how good our seats were. Yeah, I know -- seats. Meh, what can you do?
This shot didn't come out that great, but HE'S STARING RIGHT AT ME
IN WHICH I DISCUSS BANDS ONLY JOE.DISTORT AND I CARE ABOUT:
THE FLATLINERS: I nearly fainted screaming myself hoarse. Speaks for itself, I think. I AM THE AVALANCHE/HOSTAGE CALM: No one knew HOSTAGE CALM songs, which was disappointing, but the response to I AM THE AVALANCHE was a powerful reminder how joyous un-prefixed punk rock can be. CEREMONY. Pandemonium. Well, maybe a little less than pandemonium, but still an intense experience even for jaded assholes like me. DEEP SLEEP at some random bar. No stage! No barrier! I didn't know any songs and still had crazy fun. DEFEATER/CODE ORANGE KIDS at a warehouse. No stage. No barrier. No fucking problem. A performing area lit only by two red cave lights and a bunch of punks ready to go off. Nearly perfect.
its been a slow year for me with shows...not a lot of bands coming through that i like + my overall jadedness towards shows/ the social bullshit + trying to keep myself out of booze-fueled situations has cut down on a bunch for me.
my birthday weekend featured the back to back punch of ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD playing a party for my friends venues 8th anniversary on friday plus MENZINGERS on saturday was a fucking blast though. as much as i like horrendous cacaphonies of grind violence, sometimes a show where you can just sing along with everyone is the best thing.
DEEP SLEEP i would assume is a fun time, i havent seen them but i saw a few of their labelmates who ruled hard, esepcially LIFE TRAP who arent too hot recorded but fucking killed it live.
the only thing on the horizon for me is CEREMONY who is playing right after Phx COmic con and right before i leave town for a few days aka Awesome Week. excited but worried because i dont like the new record from the half ive heard. although ive seen some recent set lists and it appears they are playing a good mix, so we shall see. havent heard CODE ORANGE KIDS yet, but my buddy w similar tastes told me they are great. need to check it out
