i have a split 7" single here somewhere with that skids track on one side and Babylon Burning by The Ruts on the other side. One side gets played waaaay more than the other.
Ahhh the skids. "Scared to Dance" was one of the first records i ever bought from a second hand record store in 1986. Into the valley is still a great song. It was basically the gateway into my full on Big country Obsession that lasted for about 3 years....
God, I remember seeing Swords of 1000 Men on MTV back in the day. They showed about the same time as Safety Dance by Men Without Hats and some Adam and the Ants video or another. Didn't Edward Tudorpole claim to be descended from Henry VIII?
Sparks. I never got into them, vaguely knew who they were, until I found Matt Howarth's "Those Annoying Post Bros.," featuring hilariously ultra-violent Ron & Russ Post, named after Ron & Russ Mael from Sparks. I like that clip above. It totally sounds like something Amanda Palmer would cover.
EDIT: Actually, drawing a line between Palmer and Sparks is an interesting one, which I'd never thought of which makes a lot of sense. Always worth remembering that This Town... was a No 2 hit. Pop music is amazing.

I love that Skids track, but I have never heard of Tenpole Tudor before, and I quite liked it too. - I hadn't been exposed to very much British post punk stuff while growing up where I did in Canada- (but now that I have an account with last.fm I'm making up for it big time). I really like the Undertones, the Ruts, the Stranglers... beautiful stuff, and it's all brand new to me.
Puts me in mind of Rip, Rig and Panic and even the jazzy croonings of Matt Bianco (whom I have a soft spot for, even though I know they would get shredded here).
Man, there was a whole explosion of bands that had a bunch of ex-punkers who discovered horn-lines, hired a black singer, and decided loose jazz needed to be in the charts. Probably also pulling from all the kids who grew up with the Ska scene wanting to cobble together a band. Oh, don't forget Amazulu...
