I've still got tapes of The Young Ones somewhere around. Amazulu were on one of them, doing "Montego Bay."

Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth once said, something along the lines of, that he was going to write a book on the million best singles of the eighties. it seems like a fools errand until you start to remember all the awesome music that existed throughout the various undergrounds at the time.
The mainstream was so utterly dire that it's really tainted the whole decade, musically speaking. -
True, although that said, don't think that the 80's were/are in any way special in that regard. Nostalgia is a trap.

That was also my first exposure to them.
I also got to see the Young Ones invite Motorhead, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Rip Rig and Panic, Nine Below Zero and The Damned to perform as part of their shows. Genius!
I imagine Warren double speed head-banging/moshing to the Amazulu song, personally... -

I actually owned that Amazulu single. Back in Thee Olden Days, record shops would do five singles for (say) a quid, but if you couldn't muster up five singles, they'd sell 'em at 50p each. So you ended up with four records you wanted and one piece of shit. I have a lot of pieces of shit stored in boxes. To get a Teardrop Explodes 12" cheap I had to also get a Vicious Pink Phenomena picturedisc, once...
I also owned that first Style Council single. Got a copy of "Tom Hark" knocking around somewhere, too. -

And I will say this...
Rag on the "80's pop stars" all you like, but as an American, the sheer diversity of stuff that made it to the charts in the UK during the 80's kicked the shit out of what passed for a diverse, entertaining chart over here. The possibility of Style Council and Amazulu being in the charts at the same time in the US would be near zero. I would glance at the UK charts in Trouser Press magazine each month and cry tears of 80's jealousy. -

the 80's are held in such high regard that it totally misses the mark. same with the 70's.
Dave Haslam's book on the 70's, 'Not Abba' sums up what is wrong with 70's nostalgia - the 70's theme bars, 70's nights and so on. They stick to a certain period of time, say 72-75 and stay there, wallowing in a pool of shit.
UB40's demise has tainted their entire back catalogue, which is a shame as 'the earth dies screaming' is still as eery now as it was back then. It easily belongs on a jukebox sitting beside 'Ghost Town' by the Specials.
hell, just from each year, the 80's produced a remarkable amount of fantastic music.
