Pretty good thanks, Ariana. Had a few days away on the Welsh coast, stayed in a lighthouse that has its own Dalek. Hope your head improves.

Mental Kait may be, but she certainly knows how to handle a tonfa! (It's one of the delights of Paul's art for me that he draws physical violence so well, and so accurately.)

Not bad thanks Ariana. Looking forwards to a good sleep in on the morrow followed by a day of mild debauchery on the sabbath.

As for the episode, nice. Freak Flashback on page 1 (I can't decide if that's KK or Miki in the bell). I didn't notice (as I'm sure was intended) the knife on page four panel two until it went flying in panel three. Page six, panel two - was our murder victim a cannibal? And "some bloke" outside town?... I've been reluctant to jump on the "Mark around every corner" bandwagon but I can't stop a little voice in the back of my head...

Which is probably exactly what Warren wants :)

I'm sharing the Friday morning brewing of caffeine ritual. Too much beer last night, work has been one computer snafu after the other but my new one finally has no issues aside from a dead chicken and obscure alsa incantations.

All my head needs now is a cup of water & then plenty of caffeine before the dread of "Do I still have a LAN at work?" must be faced. The blunt instrument might feel better then figuring who to maim first. You have to love clueless remote admins that can barely type in their login without handholding. I still wish I could hire your shade or a couple of Warren's eels to avoid dipping into my "This is a warning voice. You are 5 seconds from pain. 4...3...2...1..." mode.

Kait may be mental, but you have to love the girl. She doesn't exactly play fuck around, and ohh what's that? More calmly asked questions (next week) before a blow to the temple? YAY!!!!

Once again, I have reasons to go into work on Friday with a smile. A maniacal smile that scares little children, but a smile none the less

 Morning folks...
had a shit pile of a few bad days.
My good old tom cat Goblin got hit by a car two days ago. I almost caught him before he darted into the street, but my stupid fingers couldn't grab him. We rushed him to the vet immediately and from there had conflicting reports on how he was doing. At one point we though that he just broke his tail and leg, then he had spinal injuries, then he was showing improvment, then he had no hope...so on the third day we had to go say goodbye to him and they put him down. I don't think I've cried harder than during the last few days, even when my buddy will got shot. At least will didn't suffer.
The asshole who hit him was flying at at least fourty mph down a one lane residential road. He stopped and asked if Gob was okay, but when I asked him to drive my hubs to the vet with Gob he just made an excuse. I didn't let him finish I just ran to get the car keys...asshole. He drove off and didn't come back.
I can't wait to move out of this fucking town.

Yet another week where we are left waiting to understand whether or not the killing is connected with either Luke or Mark, or some other maniac. Hmmm, a dystopian future where people eat people? Guess it makes logical sense and I'm sure Mr. Ellis will handle this well (and there'll be more to it than that), but I am really tired of this sort of development. That's probably my fault for the things I read, of course.

Liked the black and white sections here and am interested to how that future glimpse will play in, if relevant. Art as gorgeous as ever.

@Pooka really sorry to hear that. I've lost two cats to cars, one to a friend that couldn't avoid him, which made it more tragic. Still miss the tyke.

When she reads someone's minds, they'll just assume some other desperate character dimed them after a session of wall-to-wall therapy. (I'm married into such a family, so I know)

I am tired, wired and fried. This afternoon I get to wear this on stage (and I mean the hat, not the bag). And get drunk later. I have a small town bar that's knows I'm coming, knows me personally and I can't wait. Only thing I'm dreading it showing up and there's a shitload of people there. A few drinks will solve that problem.

Here, picture of last minute artistry:

Is one of the suspects dressed like a peasant?

Yea, I noticed that. I though it was a poncho/tunic combo, but looking closer the tunic might actually be in two pieces (or belted). It's an interesting outfit, especially as most people we've seen have been wearing heavily patched scavenged/recycled modern clothes. I liked the bagy trouses that are bound below the knee, although they must be a bitch to get on and off. It reminds me of when my brother and I would play 'Ninja', a game that consisted of winding mum's fabric scraps around our wrists, ankles and anywhere else, and then try and cause bodily death to each other on the trampoline. Good times.

Police brutality!! See the violence inherent in the system!

That was my first reaction, until someone pointed out the knife I missed in the first viewing.

Oh. Well, that's okay then.(I feel like a cunt) That was my second reaction.

Two real kneejerk reactions from a fictional story.

Also, I wondered why I didn't see the knife the first time around, and that's when I realized how the panel was set up. The focus is the bright red blood spurting, the rest of the colors in the panel are dull in contrast, even the knife, so all my attention was at the violent act itself, the metal pipe, the glazed facial expression of the suspect. All occuring at the left side of the panel, while in the far right side, the knife looks like its flying out of the panel, almost 3d like. almost detached from the panel.

Great job Mr. Ellis:) Great job Mr. Duffield

And, as always, the art is amazing.

 > Kait's fucking mental

It's a hard thing to do to someone with a knife like that, but proportional.

I like the black and white: that really worked.

I didn't like every detail of the pistol handling, but this fight really worked, the way that Kate handles her baton and the girl's arm and throat. Two continuity problems:

Between the last two panels of page 4, I don't quite see how Kait gets inside the girl's raised knife hand, given that she started outside the girl's lowered knife hand

At the top of page 3, it looks good to hold the baton so that she's pointing it like a pistol, but instead perhaps she ought to be holding it upside-down so that on the next pages it can rotate to lie along the outside of her forearm.

Also I don't see exactly where on her face the girl was hit.

I'm happy that Kait opened up at least a little to Mikki about her investigational techniques: as if Mikki's at least is one person whom she's able to trust, if not like.

Nifty dialog/interrogation, too, in this episode. Have you ever had the feeling that the person questioning you knew the answer as soon as they asked the question?

"Say it out loud." Heh. Being able to get answers, she still needs to do the leg-work as a policeman, but that must make her pretty darn effective/relentless.

If these are refugees from Shoreditch Park, they're looking well recovered now. I suppose more than a few weeks must have passed since then. How can you talk to some guy outside of town? I've just realized I don't know what Whitechapel's borders look like. One border is the flooded Thames, I suppose; is the rest of the perimeter (towards the North, e.g. between Whitechapel and Shoreditch) all land-based, porous, and unguarded? Such that the refugees can all be marched in, those two can wander in and out, and Alice can walk in with a shotgun? And people can come in with a mortar? I suppose the answer is yes. I wonder why they don't get more refugees than they do, then.

@Ariana--My sympathies. Hope you're not in a part of town where loud annoying construction noises/loud rocking out neighbors make your headache worse.

@pooka--Ah shit, sorry to hear about Goblin. And losing Gob to a dick who didn't even attempt to make amends...

Seeing Kait take down a knife-wielding attacker and explain telepathic police work is always a win. My worry on the initial read was that Kait would be too distracted by the possible witness to notice the knife being pulled out.

The issue of cannibalism in the FREAKANGELS future makes me wonder how our titular gifted characters deal with the phenomenon. I don't think they intended to create worldwide Alive scenarios (i.e. trapped in the Andes without any food except corpses of fellow passengers) when they acted to end our world. But what responsibility do they bear for the appearance of cannibalism and what should they do about it?

FREAKANGELS aside, the week felt like I need more hours in the day to honor my commitments and those commitments I do make time for feel like they're yielding half-assed results. I've got a 2-hour meeting to set up in a couple of weeks and I don't have any speakers. My current writing project has been a mess of false starts and vaguely unsatisfying paragraphs. The looming deadline so far hasn't delivered a jolt of instant creativity. The only thing that keeps me sane is knowing that I'm aspiring to something more than catching the next TV show coming up that evening.

Not necessarily "thinkers" but "doers". That's not to say that they don't have philosophies (obviously), but they're significantly more concerned with the physical world in their day-to-day activities.* Furthermore, Miki's process is similarly procedural to Kait's: assess the problem, determine the cure, enact said cure according to predetermined processes. So it would make sense that a procedural question would come up.

"Say it out loud." - I love this as both intimidation and cover up. "Mind reading? That's crazy! He had to tell me, didn't he?" Crazy like a fox, that Kait.

*And yes, KK and Caz are engineers, but engineering is at least as batshit-crazy creativity as it is actual labor. I'm pretty sure she has no idea, nor intention of understanding how "The world not according to Kait" goes. I think Kait operates like clockwork - winds up, goes to work. I think that part of is surfaces in her "loner" vocation, shes just inherently outside of the pack.
Also, for Personal reasons, the idea that "Mark Fox" might have something to do with the demise of "Tom Norris" made me giggle like a total cunt.
I loved the disarming panel. really dramatic snapshot.

I didn't see the cannibalism thing coming, but it makes perfect sense. Pretty much every post-apocalyptic tale where there are wandering bands of survivors make mention of cannibalism.

RE: the Jack the Ripper connection: "On October 16th George Lusk, the president of the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee, received a three-inch-square cardboard box in his mail. Inside was half a human kidney preserved in wine, along with the following letter. Medical reports carried out by Dr. Openshaw found the kidney to be very similar to the one removed from Catherine Eddowes, though his findings were inconclusive either way. The letter read as follows:

(Transcription)

From hell.
Mr Lusk,
Sor
I send you half the Kidne I took from one woman and prasarved it for you tother piece I fried and ate it was very nise. I may send you the bloody knif that took it out if you only wate a whil longer

signed
Catch me when you can Mishter Lusk"

Source: http://www.casebook.org/ripper_letters/

So there's that. The weird thing is, though, they've made no mention of any of the dead guy's organs being removed. He wasn't eaten, he was murdered. So there's that, too.

 @IMCL

Unless things're really gonna get turned on their heads (which is entirely possible), the only other possibility is Luke, and that just seems far-fetched to me. The guy's a rapist piece of shit with poor impulse control, not a serial killer. If this is a serial killer. The Jack and Ripper thing leads me to believe that there will be other murders, but perhaps that is a red herring or a diversion tactic by whoever committed the murder.

@IMCL there's no info (I think) on how exactly they went about killing Mark. Don't think they shot him.

I have Amanda Fucking Palmer's "Guitar Hero" stuck in my head, which is nice - far preferable to other things that could be in my head - just, you know, it's going round and round.... Anyway, there's the possibility that I don't totally grok what you mean by "mental". Always assumed that it meant "nuts" "wacky" but neither psychotic nor violent. I don't think Kait is psychotic and the violence was easily justified. Also, I don't think she's nuts. Perhaps terse and unconventional but so far only the dungeon was shocking, but swiftly easy to understand. And this is from the peacenik in the crowd.

Maybe it's my own hangup. I've had to deal with people who are genuinely cracked and need to take meds or live in facilities and so I get a little twitchy about overlaps in labeling someone with odd habits with terms related to mental imbalance. So if Kait is mental - nutty - and odd in her way of solving problems then I see a lot of this being pretty standard in high quality police work (yes, I know "standard...high quality"). Thanks to TV shows, such as the one Kait is modeling herself on, we assume that police do stuff like this when investigating perps, even though we know interrogation isn't supposed to be so violent - civil rights, etc. But we love our shows when the officers push the line and get in trouble but know they are doing what they need to. We expect officers to follow their hunches over SOP. We don't think famed fictional detectives can read minds, but we do assume they can guess accurately and are aware that their guesses won't stand up in court. Ergo, a cultural grant of leeway letting detectives find evidence that bolsters their hunches.

Making someone say something out loud is way, WAY more than cover for telepathy. It solidifies the intel, it makes the perp(s) know Kait knows, and if they haven't faced it before, it makes the perps face that what they were doing was wrong, hence bringing the law on their heads. She's not there for shits and giggles and doesn't want them leaving the scene feeling like she's merely persecuting them.

This week's FA is hardcore! Kick ass and take names ^_^

Hi, Ariana. Hope you are well and running at full capacity.

Week makes my mood go up and down. Been working all through the weeks this summer w/ only Sunday as my day off. Sundays are pretty worthless, so I really fucking want a REAL day out of the week. So I can do shit.
But last night I bought new comics, so I felt happy. And then I laid out a few new pages for my Team Dracula story. Man, I started it in 07-08, I think. But then I drew other stories that would eventually build up to it. And now everything caught up to me so I get to finish it. It's more exciting for me now because I've gotten marginally better with my drawing skillz so everything feels very f*cking fun ^_^

I would buy the Kait shirt.

Frankly, I don't think she's as mental as most everyone else does. A few people here have pointed out that she has reasons behind her behavior, she has logic and it makes sense. She's extreme, and there's obviously instability there, but "fucking mental"? Nah. Of course, I'm still hoping she pulls a Malcom Reynolds with Luke; just walking up and shooting him, without discussion, then getting on with business. But we'll see what happens with Luke eventually.

If it wasn't Warren Ellis writing this, I might be more inclined to believe the guy outside of town is the long awaited Mark...

Some additional thoughts, now that I've digested this a bit:

The relationship between Kait and Miki makes sense - Miki acts as a coroner, so Kait depends on her in her investigations. It was, in fact, Miki who noticed originally that there were no defensive wounds on the body.
Miki also keeps records on everyone who comes into Whitechapel. It was, again, her who had the information on who his friends were.

I think it was interesting that Miki also noted that he 'lacked the usual survivor guilt' of the others. That possibly implies that he wasn't really running his show? It's how Alice got to Whitechapel...why not a few others, who might report back to him?

 @ Fan

I think I see how she got inside her arm. You can see that Kait's raising her left hand at the same time as the baton. Kait twists/steps to face the girl, while using her empty hand to shove the girl's knife hand away from her body. At that point, Kait went from perpendicular to her to parallel, which is why they line up like that. Then, Kait finishes her 180, taking knife-girl the last 90 degrees. The pulling on the girl helps bring Kait inside her arm. I'm imagining how my chemistry professor did an Akido throw in class, just more, um, baton-y.

As for how she's holding the baton, no idea. Maybe she can twist her forearm in a circle, or she rolled the baton over her fingers to change her hold. She points it from a better hold on the last page. If we saw the backs of her fingers instead of the palm side, I'd say she just rolled the baton inside her grip.

If the Shoreditch guys have only been there a week, then this weird dude they're seeing outside of town has probably been there awhile, has really good timing, or is one of the refugees and this dude didn't know it.

@ Frexels - it's a police baton. It's got a wee handle. Shaped like an 'L;, kind of. Fantastic weapons. Very useful.

Kait's not mental. She's GORGEOUS. OMFG. I have a crush on her.

"Do you know who I am?" Yes, miss.

And her rationale vis a vis mind-reading makes the psycho-drama of the "Torture Chamber" all the more plausible. Not that she DOESN'T torture people, perhaps. As a telepath, she can torture them without touching them. Especially if they're Out Of Their Minds with Fear.

Miki also keeps records on everyone who comes into Whitechapel. > You can see that Kait's raising her left hand

Yes: and therefore, the girl shouldn't have raised her own knife hand over her shoulder for a downward stab (which lets Kait step "inside" between the girl's body and her knife). Maybe the girl did, though.

I also didn't see where the knife came from, nor see the girl cross from the man's left-hand side to his right.

> she rolled the baton over her fingers to change her hold

I think there's a risky way to roll it, to change the grip from the handle to the shaft. It's that the choreography is so well depicted that I was trying to see it as real.

I was thinking the same thing. I've studied brazillian jujitsu and krav maga for a few years (a weekend thing, I'm not a badass). I think it might've been from jujitsu, but the first panel of page five looks a little like a sweep I've been taught. Admittedly we don't see what Kait's feet do, and the whole control the arm and neck thing is pretty standard, but Duffield put at least a bit of thought into it.

I've always wondered about that. It's gotta be hard just to draw a person moving normally, and you do that all day every day. I bet it's really difficult to draw a person doing something technical like martial arts, especially if you're trying to be realistic and not totally superhero.

Perhaps Mr. Duffield would like to chime in, if he reads this. When you do action scenes, how do you choreograph the different "moves?" Or does Ellis do that, giving more specific descriptions than "Kait throws her to the ground?" Have you yourself ever studied any martial art? Do you feel more comfortable drawing a certain "style," or does it change?

Maybe this question has been answered before. If someone would let me know, I'd be appreciative.

I was about to say just the same thing.

What happens from one panel to the next was whatever needed to happen to connect the two, even if it's improbable or tricky to pull off.

Of course if the transition is too improbable, or actually approaches impossible, it might be a problem, so I direct all wannabe editors to the thread I made for just such a purpose a while back: clicky.

I wouldn't have noticed that, shall we say, speedy costume change, unless it had been pointed out. I think that for every one thousand people who read the comic, only one of them, someone with a fastidious and Holmes-like attention to detail, would have noticed. When you remove the impossible, whatever remains MUST BE Freakangels.

Things happen between the panels. (Or gutters, as they're also known.) She took off her sweat-shirt. All the better to get at the knife. Cop's coming, get ready. Look busy. Distract her. If I saw Kait rolling up on me, I'd do a fucking costume change, too. Like Mary Tyler Moore. Maybe I'd make it after all.

@Pooka Coming from a fine New Zealand heritage (One of the suburbs near where I grew up translates as 'burnt buttocks') I was crushed to find hufu was not real. As were my fellow Kiwi housemates. We had a menu planned, though maybe we'll just call it on hold...

Sorry to hear about your cat, commiserations.

The Kait being mental thing continues to be intriguing. I guess her black & white, Quincy inspired view of justice is mental, but then again it's an extreme world they're in. In such an enviroment imposing order would seem a necessity but Kait also seems disinclined to allow others to help in her crusade. She doesn't seem to be interested in setting up a working society so much as roleplaying.

 Hello everyone,

Wow, its amazing how much story can be packed into a few pages. We find out that Kait is more than a little paranoid (we also find out that to a point her paranoia is justified), we are shown the powerful link between Miki the healer and Kait the police. Isn't interesting that even in this setting these two professions are required to work together and come to understand the other's ethos. But the big shocker, the one slipped in almost casually, is that the Freakangels have inadvertantly taken in a couple of cannibals. Great storytelling, looking forward to next week.

@Pooka: I'm very sorry to hear about your cat. I lost mine a year ago to cancer. I've not yet worked myself up to adopting another cat from the shelter, but I will eventually. I'm sure that Goblin had a good life and knew you and your husband did the best you could to protect and care for him.

thanks guys, I miss that goofy bastard so much.....on the up side, I managed to get Goblin's fatass mentally handicapped brother Gremlin back in the house, so he's safe now, and my half skunk filth cat Steamshovel is gaurding and taking care of him... And in the short time that Goblin was outside, we're pretty sure he managed to impregnate one of the neighbor cats, so his offspring will be running around here in about three months.
As soon as I get a new laptop I'm going to start writing a Richard Adamsesque story about Mad Jack Fluffkins, Goblin's first offspring. Gob will be in a big section of it, because he raised the hellbeast.
my ex's dog is in a children's book she had published through school called Sparks Do Art...we were thinking about doing Sparks do Math next involving him and the cats...

 @ Pooka

*Adds condolences to list for your beloved feline*

@ Warren and Paul

Wonderful week. Seriously, I am full of wonder at the amazing amount that you guys can convey is just six pages. Between the action and the flashbacks, it comes across so much more clearly what is going on. BEside plot points, I never feel like I'm in the dark as to how or why something is happening.

Thanks for this.
