waves paw - used to torture other peoples work without permission, then some with permission then started making noises again for the hell of it. made a downloadable album with a few people that mixmag favourably reviewed. that and it's re-mastered with more spooky noises version can be found here. a proper album with allsorts of shenanigans and showbiz guest stars such as colin newman from wire, richard x (reciting francis bacon over a drunken night in the radiophonic workshop), severed heads' tom ellard adding lost in space samples and noises to our wheezy generator noise and jd twitch of optimo in glasgow on some drums. sounds like a fight in a pub during a brian eno performance. album can be nicked from here if anyone doesn't fancy a gamble buying the thing. and bizarrely, you can get it in woolies online, as well as asda !

I have 3 main musical(?) outputs.

I play guitar, sample mangle, and tape slime for my shoegaze/stoner metal/laptop project dustperiod. dustperiod@myspace a song for my fellow Whitechapel residents in a decent quality mp3 rate Magaera from an upcoming album w/o a solid title yet

I rhythmically arrange tracks in a manner to facilitate dancing as DJ Tacopunch. I also roll all of my non-shoegaze remix work under the same umbrella. Most recent mixtape is here and you can peep at the tracklist at the DJ Tacopunch Myspace

I play a variety of circuit bent keyboards and home made electronics in the casio comes grindcore dance explosion styling of Dance Accident (aka Dig Dug Dildo) with the talented Ms Allison and we're currently putting together our first EP.

Yes.

I work in a covers band (drums/vocals). Play standing up with an electronic hybrid kit.

Write and record music at home. Saves arguing with band members, and I can be as silly as I want.
I lean towards guitar-heavy pop. It's like I want to be a techno version of Dave Grohl.

Bands are such a fragile thing.

My favorite band of all time is an Aussie band by the name of TISM (This Is Serious Mum). Their balaclava clad anti-social antics are incredible.

Vacuum tube design or one of the newer ones? I remember for a while you could only build them yourself, and getting the pieces was ridiculous. Also, do you have any samples? I'd love to hear a theremin with delay/echo.

i almost built a theremin - designed the board, got to the wind your own coils bit and gave up. I reallly want to make a hand cranked cassette player that plays noise as you crank it. (pan_sonic / jimi tenor / sahko recordings use them in a box with a crank handle - sounds amazing)

Thumbprint Railway Co. is my main source of musical output. I play drums, sing, and occasionally hit keyboards in that band. We have been told we sound like The Clash covering The Band and also like The Animals fooling around with The Dead Milkmen.

For Boston area folks, we are playing our next show at The Bulfinch Yacht Club on December 21, our first gig since my daughter came along a few months ago. More shows to pop up afterwards, I'm sure.

We also recently finished an EP of three songs, which can be downloaded at our website, or our myspace.

Other than that I am also working on finally recording the seven or eight songs I've written personally over the last few years. I dig music.

I play drums for Your Favorite Assassin. That name's only gotten us in trouble a couple times.

We used to be post-hardcore, but I'm not sure what that means anymore. We aim for dynamic and our live show's still dangerous, so it's fast rock and roll regardless, except when it's quiet and slow.

I play mandolin and bass recorder for a medieval/renaissance group that occasionally plays for food but mostly plays for the heck of it. I've started learning fiddle and it sounds more horrible than you just imagined. I've played some harp, too, and may again.

Outside of that, I've probably about forgot how to play trombone and trumpet, so you can tell I don't much; I play some piano and guitar for my own amusement, and I'm trying to push myself into messing around with tormenting music into shape via computery thingies, such as MAGIX Music Maker, but I'm being a sissy about it so far.

And I sing, if people have been really bad to me.

I'm a thirty year old skater punk- i've been in small-local punk and metal acts since i was thirteen years old, i am a garage educated guitar player and it seems i can't shake off the creative urge grow up and get a real job. i'm sure quite a few others would agree whole hearted with me when i call the creative drive a curse as much as a gift. but the fact remains that i will never be a whole person ( much to my family's continued shigrin) unless i follow those urges. my big crazy dream to see this world from the back of a tour van. My band is an inspiration to me, where i'm am older and getting so tired- their enthusiasim seems to know no limits. we've gone through a year of setbacks and have now got a viable unit ready to tear it up this year. we are still working on recording but we have some scratch tracks up on our myspace page..

I'm a musician of sorts. I sing in one of those goth/punk bands that is never going to go anywhere but saves you the trouble of thinking of something to do on a Sunday afternoon. Sometimes we play live and then friends come and throw sharp things at our heads.

I am the drummer in a band called SunDogs and we are from Dallas. We're currently playing gigs in Dallas and the surrounding area. We're a straight ahead rock band, with four talented musicians. We're basically the kind that aims to make you sing along, rock out a bit and laugh your ass off.

I started off manipulating tape loops, and playing in a post-punk industrial improv rock noise unit called NEEF in 1978. Eventually my stuff evolved into some kind of Residents-Meet-Cluster "pop" music. Now I'm back playing with loops, samples and sound effects and making sound sculptures - but on computer instead of on a bunch of cheap tape recorders. No obvious genre, just sounds I find interesting.

= NEEF put out a couple EPs and (recently) a CD
= I put out an EP, a Fortean sci-fi spoken word Cassette, an LP
= Both NEEF & I appeared on a bunch of obscure compilations.
= Half my EP was bootlegged on an LP collection called "I Hate The Pop Group" in 2001
= After putting out the LP in 1989, I took a very long break. But I started constructing "music" again shortly before Warren included me on The 4am #1.

And for 26 years or so, I've played other people's "unusual, experimental, and otherwise hard-to-classify music" on the radio - currently on KEUL (Girdwood, Alaska)

Actually, most of what I've got up there at the moment are "golden oldies" from Los Angeles in the early/mid 80s. I've only lived in AK for a few years. But I think a lifetime of sci-fi, and a post-punk appreciation for post-industrial landscapes at the time may share some psychic resonance with the cold and dark of mid-winter Alaska. But I'm probably just making that up. I live in a condo and work in a corporate cubicle, so I'm not exactly in touch with the Alaskan wilderness. I feel about as Alaskan as the cast of Northern Exposure... The short days do get under my skin, though. I may make crazy happy sunshine music in a few months. But probably not... my tastes are too weird for that.

I'm glad you liked it, though.

i am in one half of an NYC based electro-pop duo called Macaque. We self released the five song The Chinatown EP this year and you can order it from us on http://lovemcq.net or you can get it from iTunes. We play out and about a lot in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Dean Haspiel says that we sound like "Bjork meets OMD by way of Aphex Twin.” which is very nice of him.

We are playing twice in the near future: January 18th at Goodbye Blue Monday in Bushwisk
And on February 7th at the Knitting Factory for our official record release party!

My friend John makes what someone once dubbed "Euphoric Drone" as English Bore (which has to be the worst band name ever). It's essentially a noise/drone/laptop affair which my friend John spends hours on like the old man in the shed building UFOs. I provide a bit of guitar-based FX dirges (What can I say, I like pedals...) along with another fellow chummer from LOEB. My friend John seems to be doing extremely well for himself so have a ganders and lend your support.

Weeeeeeee I'm currently working on my own solo E.P under the moniker "Jethro Furvert", the title shall probably be "Shatner's Bassoon".

Every so often a need crashes through our collective unconsciousness, and The Furverts play a speedy, nasty stoner-y punk set.

If anyone fancies doing a faceless collaboration, I'd love to trade raw tracks with you and see what happens..kind of like a game of consequences with much cooler instruments. Give me a shout if you're up for it.

I'm also a grade 8 on both the Kazoo and Swanee whistle.

I'm currently making noises solo as Court of Hidden Faces. Using pretty much anything that makes a sound including guitar, homemade electronics, and field recording to make some Constellation Records influenced ambient/drone... Older guitar-based stuff free from here.

I released a CD near the end of last year as one half of Monsters Build Mean Robots and our line-up has expanded ever since until we were able to start playing live in December. We're at a point between post-rock (for want of a better term) and electronica.

I'm a London based musician and I am a (in ascending order of competance) acoustic guitarist, bassist, vocalist and cellist. I'm in the early stages of planning and recording my own compositions for distribution online, but still really miss playing live.

I spent five years gigging around London as 1/5th of the (now defunct) post-rock outfit Nun Of The Above playing cello and glockenspiel. I think the 2005 album "NUN" is still around for purchase at the Wupadupa shop.

(Q: is it still a shameless plug if the band is no longer together and you don't actually get any money from the sales?)

Working on a last.fm account but I need to re-encode stuff. The myspace will have a lot of unmixed, rawer tracks before I screw with them, the last.fm will have the nicer sounding stuff ( at least that's the initial plan ).

Similar to prepared piano - hugely influenced by Fred Frith and Hans Reichel.

I think that the guitar parts that wound up in the "Balinese Ghost Cats" track (the guitar was recorded years ago)- I had a screwdriver woven through the strings somewhere up the fretboard, and I was hammering/sliding a metal tube up and down the strings between that and the pickups... with a volume pedal and a maybe a cheap chorus effect box.

We’re a UK based band. Our music blends various strains of extreme music, taking its cues from doom, stoner rock, prog rock, post rock and metal. Our music will likely appeal to fans of bands like Mastodon, Knut, Neurosis, Isis, Tool and Shora. Our debut album ‘Vantage’ will be released late March / early April on the small Nottingham based indie label Sound Devastation Records.

We roped in Danica Novgordoff to do the cover art, the same lovely lady who created that beautiful little comic ‘A Late Freeze’. Any Wasteland readers may have noted that Anthony bigged us up in the letters column this month. What can I say, Anthony likes stuff that induces bleeding… from the ears.

Two new tracks from ‘Vantage’ as well as our complete early demos are available to listen to on our Official website and Myspace, as well as some promotional videos featuring footage from the ‘Vantage’ recording sessions in Holland.

I make music under the name Red State Soundsystem. Currently finishing an album which was first called THE BIG DARKNESS, and then TRAVELOGUES, and is now called GHOSTS IN A BURNING CITY.

It's electronic rock music, I guess. My stuff's been compared to Massive Attack, Peter Gabriel, Morphine, The Knife, Leonard Cohen, the Velvet Underground, Brian Eno...I dunno.

I just put up a muxtape of some recent songs, instrumentals and a couple of remixes I've done (including a Gnarls Barkley / Phil Collins thing that I personally think sounds surprisingly interesting for a mash-up).

Album will be out in time to bring down your summer mood. :-)

I've been busy today. Just finished setting up a MySpace "Tribute" page to NEEF(always all-caps) - the 1978-1982 experimental/industrial/improv/noise/post-punk group I was in. Small cult following over the years. Weird stuff, and it hasn't gotten any more normal over 25 years...

So enjoy a few samples of our shambling, atonal, low-fi, crunchy noise. There are dozens of poorly-recorded and no-doubt deteroriating cassette tapes still to plunder for material...

I'm in a band called Burnt Fur.

Think New Wave, Industrial, No Wave, and Sonic Youth. Think New Order, Human League, the Cure, Joy Division, Front 242, B-52's, Blondie, and Sonic Youth.

I fricken love it.
I play bass on most tracks, and drum pads on a few.
We've also got a guy mainly on guitar, with a bit of bass and drum.
And another guy who plays our keyboards and samples, with a touch of drums.

Bohren & der Club of Gore apparently label themselves as "death jazz", which is fair enough, I suppose. It's no wonder they've played live only once or so, as playing that goddamn SLOWLY is incredibly difficult.

In the same vein I'd toss in a recommendation for Supersilent. More of an improv thing, but in the same region of cheerfulness as Bohren.

@Destructor. Mate, had a listen to your band's tunes - very cool man! I like the theory behind it too, I am in a similar project which makes live/free ambient music in a similar way, but mate, your band are tight! Good Work, takes a lot to improvise together like that.

Can I ask, do you overdub your recordings though? How are your vocal harmonies achieved or are they pre-written?

Yah, there was a punk-ish Trenchmouth in the 90s from Chicago. None of us had heard of them before we named the band, and one of our members actually had trench mouth, so we figure we've got cred. I'm kind of conflicted on the name after learning of them, exactly because of confusion like yours, but I think we're the only extant band named Trenchmouth, so I deal with my conflict.

I used to work with Chris Dezutter of Trenchmouth in Chicago. they are actually a really great band. their third album is the best in my opinion. The singer is in a new band called the Eternals, and the drummer (I think) was on Saturday Night Live for a while. He played Frondi and I guess does the Barrack Obama impersonations.

Anyway, can you call yourself something like Trenchmouth UK? Or Trenchmouth CAN? Or howabout: The Drummer's Got Trenchmouth!

Eh, keep the name, rock out and let 'em sue you when you become famous. That's how it's supposed to be done.

i have been playing the saxophone since the late 60's. played in lots of bands over the years. i 've played in jazz,rock,experimental,jam,and blues bands. the last band i was in was called dysfunktion junktion. i love experimenting with electronics to get new and different sounds on the sax. years ago i used to play through an echoplex. lately i have been playing through an amp put out by vox called the valvetronix. it not only has about a dozen effects but a duplicates the sound of several amps from the 50's to present day amps. it has some great tube amp tones. i have been taking a break from the band scene to get my shit together in other areas of my life. i love what miles davis said. Wow, this has been going for a while. Well, I used to play drums (and still would if I could afford a set), and according to my old voice teacher I'm a very talented singer. If I had the gall to start a band I'd call it Tar Babies, because when I heard that in a Native American creation myth I laughed heartily.

In any case, my best friend is starting up a band called Alias Punch, and I honestly think that they're very good, or at least have a lot of potential. Their influences are Bob Dylan, Talking Heads, Daniel Johnston, things like that, so I thought some of you might enjoy them. (Is it all right if I'm not part of the band to post this?) Ack. Now let's see if my impaired skills with technology allow me to show you.

Hello all.

This is actually my introduction post @ Whitechapel.

Warren was kind enough to not once but twice giving the heads up on my retro/steampunkish sort of dark ambient project "Thermidor" at warrenellis.com.

The debut album came about just last December, it's named "1929" and was actually a means to start the project for the "Thermidor Universe". I am currently working on the graphic novel, exploring the same theme.

My band is called Verbatim. We are making a big album that is sucking the life out of us and taking forever. To keep us energized, we have done two little experimental recording projects. We lock ourselves in the studio and make as much music as we can before Monday. Then we release it for free to the Internet under a CC license. And also, we throw a party.

We call it POOL PARTY.

We also did one called PIZZA PARTY.

Again, these records are totally free. Please download and copy and share and remix and whatever.

I'd like to get as many ears on this as possible, so please spread the word if you are so inclined.

i've played guitar since i was 12, been in bands off and on, usually tend to do stuff that's either hardcore or grindcore oriented, as of late been comming up with a lot of late 90's emo violence (saetia, you and i, city of caterpillar etc etc.) type stuff, sort of what i want to play in a band.

also an aspiring emcee, most of the people i know here that play music either still rap or used to, hawaii has a really thriving underground hip hop community, and it's usually decent stuff.

and of course my broke ass has no recordings or releases.

Hi there!

New to this thread, chatted to a few of you elsewhere on WC though.

Just wanted to show off this crazy device my friend built for our poetry collective. I'm calling it the Dirty Bomb, because that is what it looks like. It's a simple battery linked to a mini-amp and two speakers, gaffer-taped into a camo rucksack. On the last week of the Edinburgh Fringe, we took it out for a spin with Chemical Poets Tickle and myself, plus beatboxer Psylent V (who also brought a delay pedal). This video's not great, but it shows the device and what it does. We'll be coming back to terrorize people with random attacks of spoken word and beatbox when the battery charges up again. Enjoy!

My band's name is art of simplicity, we play something you could call "progressive metal", but it doesn't have nothing to do with Dream Theater. More in the Pain of Salvation/Pink Floyd thing. We have released our first album through a small label from Greece, and we are working on our second one.

I write music, I play the violin, and I have writen all the lyrics in our first album.

I also play in another band, more indie/alternative rock, called Empty Frame. Not doing much there, just enjoy!

i take great, if terribly stupid, pleasure in making the "wh-BANG!" sound effect when presenting people with the physical CDs. also glad you dug it.
"Henry Miller vs The Sea" is one of the best song titles i've heard in ages. double pleased by that way-ethereal piano(?) in the verse. you put me in mind of the lead singer from Lucero if Kevin Sheilds from My Bloody Valentine produced his solo records. i rarely like things in this vein, so good on you for busting through my Wall Of Jade(ed).

My new project, Lester and the Hoax, had the opportunity to play a radio session on 11/4/2008 at around 8:30 Alaska time, which, as it happens, allowed us time to watch McCain's concession speech right before packing up and driving to the radio station.

the topic of the election didn't come up much, but in retrospect, it was nice to sing that ramones song with my friends that night

I am happy with how the album turned out. I've been describing it as a faggier version of clap your hands say yeah, X if they came from the forest instead of LA, or maybe a more drunk arcade fire. but, as has been mentioned earlier, it's hard to describe your own music sometimes. Please have a listen to the album and let me know what you think.

I have a few different musical projects...

Boris and the Spiders - The band I sing in at the moment. I did also play guitar for a bit until we got someone better. We're hopefully recording some studio demos over Christmas but at the moment we only have some rudimentary live recordings of us. We're not quite as garagey any more.

Wild Eyed Boy - This is me messing around with synthesizers, guitars and effects. There are also some unlicensed vocals samples on one of that tracks, but shhh. I only sporadically make anything for this, whenever I have the time.

Dressed For The H Bomb - This was a project a friend and I had. I doubt we'll ever make any more.

I once got a gig based on the merit of that song title alone, thank you. The "piano" is actually an electric mandolin with a shit ton of reverb and delay. Shoegaze country, I like it.

I will pass this Caestles around to friends who I think would enjoy it.

I see you guys are based out of Bmore/DC, I will be touring through there in March-ish time, perhaps we could do some studio fuck-around-ery and/or play a show?

good god, this thread has just killed any possibility of my doing any work this afternoon... so much to check out!

i play keys and sing in an indie/prog band called the Wookies. We're told we sound like Hawkwind, Genesis, and Ian Dury, amongst others. We've only got a disparate handful of recordings at the moment - all available for free from last.fm - but are always trying to record more.

I have a band called Solar Systems who just released an album called "Supercollider" a few months ago. Yes, it was somewhat inspired by our good friend the LHC. We are some sort of space rock. A few of our members are engineers and related nerdy occupations so about half the songs are strangely mathematically based, and other other half are just pop based. The album should be available on Itunes and Amazon soon if you are interested. Tell us what you think if you get a chance, we are from the frigid no-man's land that is North Dakota, so we don't see many people.

13 year guitarist. Ironically never been in a band, despite lots of time spent jamming with various other musicians.

I have several hundred instrumental compositions backed up on CD-R's somewhere that I can't fucking find, so for now all I've got are some amateur-quality demos up at http://webjester.org/tunes/ It's kind of all over the place, from simple acoustic ditties, to electric blues, to noisy make-you-bored-and-uncomfortable type stuff.

Really wanting to get back to work on a solo steel-string acoustic Baroque type project I've been picking at (pun!) for probably the last six years. Just need to get off my duff (and quit biting my nails.)

I've played piano and guitar most of my life. I did sax (mostly alto) grades 5-12, and a touch of percussion.

These days I play guitar (acoustic and electric), keyboard and hand drums (mostly doumbek). I am tolerably well-acquainted with the electric bass, can play in the background on the mandolin, and am starting to pick up the clarinet. I also accumulate random other instruments and technologies: I have a small accordion, a melodica (like the right hand of an accordion, but blown instead of squeezed), an E-Bow, and a theremin currently in need of some new potentiometers. Oh, and I sing.

I've been in a few rock bands, most notably (I say notably because we did actually play shows and release a CD, not because we were in any way well-known) This Shirt Is Pants, but my longest standing project has been Mr. Fusion, a songwriting duo with my friend Erich, off and on for about 8 years now. We both play guitar, percussion and keys, and both sing and write, so there is a lot of collaboration that goes on.

I am just starting to learn a bit about production. I've got a copy of Logic Studio, and we're slowly but surely recording our 50 or so song catalog (while still writing, of course), and working on filling out and arranging parts, since we have the beauty that is multi-tracking. Hopefully I'll have some stuff done in the next month or two to start putting into the world.
