I think what might be most offputting about it is that the art, while really nice looking, could conceivably appear to be what one might consider to be a "real" superhero comic, as opposed to this Ellisian nightmare. You don't get the odd scratching of Juan Jose Ryp as a warning that the book you're about to read might fuck your brainstem... It's beautiful, but a bit as though someone handed you an Alan Davis-drawn issue of Fantastic Four soaked in LSD that leaches into your fingers as you flip the pages.

The blue guy reminds me of the lead of a story from a 90's Roger Zelany-edited anthology called "Superheroes"; in the story, some groupie chick goes home with that universe's version of Superman thinking that she's going to get some from a really hot celebrity, but he ends up being weird and alien and smells like amonia and I think he melts her down into scrap and eats her, or something... So, yeah.

Mary Shelley being the mother of the modern world and all that. Aetheric Mechanics is about a world that, while tragic, is perfectly happy on its own and gets messed with by the Large Hadron Collector.

I could be pushing it.

They don't think like us.

Re: "Every angel is terrifying."
I don't mean to be the annotation police but I'm pretty sure this is a paraphrase from the first of Rilke's ten "Duino Elegies"
In the original German: "Ein jeder Engel ist schrecklich."

The translation that's linked above is not the best, but you get the idea:

"Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the Angelic
Orders? And even if one were to suddenly
take me to its heart, I would vanish into its
stronger existence. For beauty is nothing but
the beginning of terror, that we are still able to bear,
and we revere it so, because it calmly disdains
to destroy us. Every Angel is terror."

Between SUPERGOD, Mark Waid's IRREDEEMABLE, and the slow but now more sure re-release of MARVELMAN now that Gaiman extricated it from what's-his-arse with help from Marvel, I'm finally getting a good dose of superhumans being portrayed as the double-edged nukes we always knew they were, but no one wanted to bring up in polite company.

Seriously, for all the Interbitching, you think that people are desperate for the end of the Iron Age/Dark age, but even Astro City still mines good stuff from all the experiments performed. And Warren Ellis is pretty close to the only name guaranteed to make my wallet open just on the name alone.
