So, Kait's going to be hunting down the bad guys in a storm next week? I wonder if someone is controlling the weather too.

It's Notting Hill carnival this weekend. Going to check out Rico Rodriguez with The Trojans on Sunday and possibly Mick Jones with The Rotten Hill Gang on Monday, depending on how I feel and the weather. Got to decide whether to take a 9 month old baby along, or hope my wife decides to stay at home. Might take him up there for the quiet bit on Sunday, take him home and then head out again. Going to be poor this month as the first payment on my wife's new car is due and the nursery realised they hadn't charged us for the 3 weeks in July when my wife first went back to work, so another £400 to find.

holy fuck! is that what passes for "foreshadowing" these days?!? "big storm coming in from the northwest" indeed... translated: strap in kiddies, it's about to blow the fuck up! WOO HOO!!!

@fionchadd and Gekko: think Mark. he's the storm that's been brewing since episode 1.

and my week has revolved around repeatedly listening to the Ballad of G.I. Joe and laughing my ass off! (at work I keep it cued to 2:45, the Destro and Baroness part. it has become my official celebration music when I make a sale). that's what passes for excitement since my girlfriend's out of town this week. can't wait until she gets back so we can go to out for Mexican again...

also, last night, started my little brother's education in Tarantino history with Reservoir Dogs. he exhibited the appropriate response, so now we know that a) the movie stands up over time, and b) my bro's got decent taste in film.

*Waves to remote* hey there :-)

Yeah Mark is the obvious choice, but I dunno...maybe a bit too obvious? It just seems that if he's got all of these powers, he'd maybe be going at this a different way. Who were the guys who attacked in force in boats - quite near the beginning? I remember they'd never attacked in such numbers before, but I don't think that went anywhere further at the time

Page 4, panel 4 shot of Kait. Wow! I agree with LBA; she's damn sexy! I love that perspective, too. I wonder if she had time to get completely dried out from Arkady dumping her in the water before the rain hit. I think there was enough time in there? Maybe?

Looks like storms come in fast in this post-crash world. It's raining here right now, too, but a much gentler rain. It's been alluded to that the crash changed the weather - I wonder how much, and how? Was the flooding from the crash itself, or from fast, intense storms like the one that's hitting now in the comic? Or maybe I just have rain on the brain.

Wonderful stuff as always, folks!

I liked the "take her to see Miki, and then Karl": it seems to me like social rehab, more than punishment; maybe criminal or anti-social impulses are a consequence of social isolation, and curable by social interaction. I think that "community service" is often handed down by courts as a sentence in real life - I wonder how good that is, both for the people involved and for the community service in question (I've heard that armed forces would rather have fewer volunteers than more conscripts, but that's something of a different situation).

I really admire the way Kait's delegating, too: she's assuming (probably rightly) that Miki, Karl, and this man are all willing and able to help this person (a bit like 'good cop/bad cop').

The wind is picking up: which feels thrilling.

All of her talking this week was sideways-on or with her back to him (her never standing square-on facing him reminds me of various things including a video of Monty Roberts, that being a technique he uses to attract rather than threaten, when a horse that he's trying to gentle is confined into a lunging ring with him).

There were a couple of subtitles, I thought. When he said, "You know where they got put, right? Back Church Lane?" and she says "Yeah I know.": that's subtitled "Yeah well *now* I know: thanks for thinking of it."

[The other subtitle was when she said, "If she doesn't ... tell her no-one will find her body. Is that clear?": I thought that was subtitled by Mr Hex, saying "Yes, miss."]

I wonder what's behind her facial expression on the first panel of page 3? I read it as shadenfreude (Wikipedia says for what it's worth that "a 2006 experiment suggests that men, but not women, enjoy seeing bad people suffer"). Maybe it's a "shit-eating grin", a convention in a comic to illustrate confidence in one's ability to win a fight. Or maybe it's the chance to be avenging angel, karma's ambassador, without there being any subsequent repercussions/regrets/push-back from the community. Anyway, it looks like some or other pleasure being unleashed, but I don't know which.

Absolutely astounding - this is just one of the v. best things in comicsdom/land right now. And I love the way the dialogue and art combine so skilfully and beautifully so we can read off the 'subtitles' as Fan suggests, from the facial expressions and bodily stances. And indeed, foreshadowing in the shadow of the storm ...!

As for me, it was my last day as head of dept yesterday - all a bit anti-climactic (no weeping or gnashing of teeth, no young women clutching my ankles begging me not to go ...) but the important thing is NO MORE MANAGEMENT MADNESS!!! Over and over again he's getting his face smashed by someone, and never once has he stopped it.

Then again, he's usually not got pants on either, so maybe he just distracted a lot.

I think he's more oblivious than distracted. Like Conner has said, he spends too much time in his head. He's busy thinking about what he's going to do and the effects it'll have on somebody else. He's so wrapped up in himself that he doesn't consider what other people are thinking or doing. So he constantly gets surprised when people punch him in his face. Also, I think that Luke believes that the telepathic aspect of the Freakangels package is far superior to the other aspects, so he concentrates his efforts in that area. Which means he's less skilled in the aspects of the package that allow for physical actions and defense. Of course that also means that he's probably really, really good at telepathy. So, if Kirk gives him a chance, Luke could probably devastate or control him telepathically. Really, I'm waiting for the moment when Luke grabs Alice's mind and tells Kirk that he'll make her high-dive off the tower unless Kirk releases him.

 @Furious:
What Johnjones said, plus, I think it's easier to block when you can hear the shot before the bullet hits you, rather than at the same time (the other FAs blocked the bullets, but they also had some distance). Not sure why he didn't put up a shield to block further shots, though, since he still had that gun pointed at him. Maybe Luke can only do one thing at a time... like Kirk said... he's busy concentrating on that pain.

 @ diello

From what I saw, the FA's tended to employ shields in advance of being attacked. Figure that unless they enter Static Line, their reaction time are about the same as a regular human. Generally by the time a human hears a gunshot the bullet's either hit him or a second away from doing so. Either way there's not enough time to react. Though I could be wrong. Luke didn't seem to be fearful for Sirkka's safety regarding the mortor attack, though Jack did. Mortors are slower than bullets and Kirk sent a mass-call, so the FAs were able to organize a response. Sirkka actually used her own shield to protect Jack after she noticed people shooting at him.

Though you have to wonder why Luke hasn't simply turned off the nerves in his legs in order to focus his power elsewhere. Perhaps the storm will be a distraction to aid him...

Found it. I was sure I'd read a reference to it before.

In chapter 41, on page 2, Luke himself makes a statement that implies the 'shields' the Freakangels throw up are almost instinctual - a reflex. A few pages later Kait herself actually curves the trajectory of a bullet that's fired at her back.
Given that, it really does seem odd that Luke has used one at least once so far...

And for the record, if you hear the gun, the bullet has probably missed you - the bullet ALWAYS beats the bang.

@johnjones - I agree with you partially. Luke is probably always thinking about what he's going to do/get away with next. But rather than contemplating the effect that will has on others he's more likely trying to work out how to keep it from having any sort of ramifications on himself later.
And if he does spend a lot of time in his own head, then he's probably really one of the scariest people in Whitechapel, considering what that's done for Arkady, and he seems to know it. I imagine when that's finally revealed we'll all be a bit surprised.

Unless Kirk or the rain kills him here in a bit.

Even if the weather is the Bad Thing (or at least a bad thing), the storm still functions as foreshadowing. It still sets out the drama that "a storm is coming" even when the metaphorical storm is an actual storm.
