There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character. Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

okay i know -- its not supposed to be any pen portraits -- sorry Warren , I'm just takin a quick break from pages. But i wanted to participate :p

(NOTE FROM WARREN: AFUA GETS A FREE PASS TODAY BECAUSE SHE'S AFUA. ALSO I FEEL GUILTY BECAUSE I OWE HER AN EMAIL.)

Honestly i had a few ideas-- one was of a guy in kind of a tactical swat get up-- sleek really streamline -- lots of gadgets and a kinda helmet with a swirl that resembled a flamingo.

the other was a guy in a suit with hot pink inseams with flamingos on em -- really flashy cubano kinda thing--- like he came right outta vegas put on a biker helmet and decided to kick ass with short black leather gloves on. but for some reason the head gear came out looking like a power ranger....

so i went with this instead.

But I'll finish it up -- Fair is Fair -- people were allowed to put their sketches up and preprod with no protest.

Afua, those still ARE pen-portraits and they're strictly forbidden no matter what you say before writing them. I'd remove them if I were you and leave just the (nice) artwork, else the thread could be closed -- and after some time without a remake/remodel, that would really suck.

So this is how I started my morning, plotting the fabulous adventures of the closeted Colonel Moore Williams and what a cool comic it would be. I was wringing my hands as I considered how I could convince publishers that this really IS the future of comics: pink, sequined and fierce. As I painted down the lines I felt myself growing excited over the idea of such a campy, fun character for the community, streaking against the night sky in his neon pink jet. But then, as it typically goes, I finished, he came, and we were left wondering what we were thinking and both a little confused about our sexuality.

I like Afua's design best so far, using the hair color rather than slapping a flamingo mask on your character was a nice touch.

Holy crap, there's some serious awesome going on in this thread... A few quick shout-outs on pieces that stood out to me for various reasons.

@Andre Navarro - Damn that was funny... I laughed my ass off.

@jamaicad - I really, really dig the way you've got the plumage going on behind his head. I can't put my finger on it, but there's just something about it that really appeals to me. Love the diva-fied suit as well. He just looks ready to pop off the page.

@afua - Wow, those are some gorgeous colors. I have to agree, that's some seriously solid Illustrator work.

@Annie - I love this. Wonder contrast of light and shadow, incorporating the flamingo colors with punk overtones and yet still making him very dour/serious.

@Paul Sizer - God damn. That's really tight.

@Laemeur - MS Paint? Seriously? That's some damn fine work, especially for using that program to do it.

@Amalgamated Biscuit - I don't know, I kinda like it.

...and lest I forget: @Warren - Thank you for bringing the R/R threads back.

Okay, so I'm short on time this week due to heading off for Atlanta for DragonCon here in 6 or 7 hours. Plus, I thought I'd do something not-so-dark-and-serious. Photoshop, roughly 2 hours. In retrospect, had I the time, I may have tried to draw up a boa to go in there as well. Oh well, no biggie, and I'm happy with what it is for 2 hours.

I might (might) get a 2nd piece done, as I've got a more serious one I'm working on, but I'm not expecting to have it finished before heading out. If nothing else, I'll wrap and finish it when I get back.

@ viol8tor; I'm sure it was the same shot in fact. The bit about the plane in the prompt made me think stealth instantly. The B2 Spirt to be exact. If my mind had gone elsewhere I'm sure it would have came out awful. I liked your take on the character. Nice torso.

@ Annie; I always enjoy just looking at your pieces. Your finger is always on the pulse of the scene. To be honest, that lone bookster could have been named anything. I'd still be interested. The color, design, and layout is groundbreakingly fantastical. And I'm flattered my jet caught your eye.

@ struthersneil; I picture this as a standard wake up scene the morning after. I really like the clothing too. I see it moving and hear the wicker mask stretching. Excellent work.

@ jamaicad; now that fits the name. Really dynamic pose. Great stuff all around.

@ JCEFalconi; your Flamingo brings in thoughts of noir and other happy things where its all black and white and pink is the only splash of color.

@ sseloske; another one I would die to see animated. The design just begs to jump. Electric.

@ Chris G; the gloves win me over. Overall, the outfit is so formal but the gloves say hero to me. There is nothing I do not like. I'd buy the varient cover.

@ Sobreiro; Another Remake stamp. I want, no I need, to see your Flamingo eating a man's face off. Period.

@ Camdiggy; I see a very distinct figure. The work with the visor is outstanding.

@ Oxbrow; the Steampunk adventures of The Flaming O must be made.

@ shawnsalgado; love the Flamingo eye scar. The half blind man is the king among the blind.

@ Paul Sizer; your nazi action art is award winning alone. How did you come up with that holster? Its so genius.

Thanks for all the nice comments, glad to know I have a secondary career in gun holster design waiting for me in case this comics gig craps out.

Well, no surprise with my entry - the path of phallicness that I took has been traveled down before earlier in the thread...

While the fear factor is undeniable, it does raise practical questions : does Moore Williams need to fight crime naked to induce the proper Flamingo Effect? Should he wear shoes and (preferably white) socks?
I like how the thread restarted this september. My favorites 'til now are Andre's, Paul Sizer's, Michael Furious' and Struthersneil's.

yay! it worked.... i did this sketch today at a meeting with some copec markers. sorry i didn't have any reference so dont look too closely at the gun and plane, i hardly ever draw either of them(i've drawn a few more planes than guns) i went with the 'flamenco flamingo' not too sure why.

Lovely stuff this week, seems like everyone's back from their breaks :)

The first thing I thought of was the flamingoes (and the hedgehogs!) from Alice in Wonderland - you know, the ones that they play cricket with!
So here we go: The Flamingo, secret agent of the Crown! With his gusto and his fists he deals with the villians of the thirties!

His companions are Casimir, the fearful hedgehog, and L.I.D.L. - an amazing size-changing automaton powered by mystical mushrooms found only in the Hollow Earth.

Of course, he needs a fitting villian... and who better then the Queen of Hearts! (S)he runs a global organized crime syndicate

My Flamingo is actually the first illustration that I have ever done entirely digitally from scratch, and I very surprised that something half decent came out of it.
I didn't really have an idea or direction to go on for this one, (and there had been so MANY awesome ones early on in the thread) so I decided to give myself an hour to sketch around with Manga Studio until something took shape. I still don't know the program very well, but the digital drawing and inking feels so natural in Manga Studio,very free-ing, so I just went with the flow and then added a dose of colour in Photoshop.
So many great entries right from the get-go though, too many to name- but you know you are....
If I had to choose a favourite this round, it would be Michael Furious I think - sorta reminded me of character that might show up in The Invisibles. I wanna draw that guy!

thanks. i really like the gritty feel in yours. i was never all that good at coloring 'gritty'.. yours reminds me of 'the crow'(which is a compliment in my books).
