There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character. Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

    ---
    From Contact Comics in 1944:

Colonel Moore Williams knows the enemy is easily terrified by the strange and unknown, so he becomes the superhero known as the Flamingo! He has no powers and is only armed with his intellect, his physical strength, his service revolver, and a specially built plane. He uses his new identity to accomplish things the military cannot.

I deliberately withhold the original art, and will delete it if if shows up here.

Your task, as ever, is to re-invent that into something a 21st Century audience could enjoy.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread. No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

    You have one week. Go.

Hallelujah! The R/R threads were sorely missed.

    SWEET!

...And that's not right on a very entertaining level. I'll try to get something up in the next day or three before I head out for DragonCon.

I could totally see Captain Jack Harkness as the Flamingo! in an alternate fictional reality. Especially after that first entry.

Ha! This is going to be a good one.

Just a quick thing made straight away...will put some more thought into it...hooray for bank holiday weekends.

I am ashamed that the first thing that came to mind upon reading "knows the enemy is easily terrified by the strange and unknown" was

"He uses his new identity to accomplish things the military cannot."

That immediately made me think of this:

    I am very sorry.

Sometimes, I wonder if Warren makes these things up himself. The Flamingo? Seriously? I guess every good super-hero name had been taken by 1944...

    @ Andre - Don't be sorry.

Drat, there goes my "okay, Batman found his shtick like this and... oh" joke. :)

And my John Waters joke too.

mushi actually managed to make a Flamingo-styled crimefighter look dangerous, which is also very cool.

I offer the following without comment aside from: Excellent work, Andre.

okay i know -- its not supposed to be any pen portraits -- sorry Warren , I'm just takin a quick break from pages. But i wanted to participate :p

(NOTE FROM WARREN: AFUA GETS A FREE PASS TODAY BECAUSE SHE'S AFUA. ALSO I FEEL GUILTY BECAUSE I OWE HER AN EMAIL.)

Honestly i had a few ideas-- one was of a guy in kind of a tactical swat get up-- sleek really streamline -- lots of gadgets and a kinda helmet with a swirl that resembled a flamingo.

the other was a guy in a suit with hot pink inseams with flamingos on em -- really flashy cubano kinda thing--- like he came right outta vegas put on a biker helmet and decided to kick ass with short black leather gloves on. but for some reason the head gear came out looking like a power ranger....

so i went with this instead.

    the flamingo

But I'll finish it up -- Fair is Fair -- people were allowed to put their sketches up and preprod with no protest.

Afua, those still ARE pen-portraits and they're strictly forbidden no matter what you say before writing them. I'd remove them if I were you and leave just the (nice) artwork, else the thread could be closed -- and after some time without a remake/remodel, that would really suck.

Everyone else, thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed the piece. I'll probably do another, since that was just "the origin".
