It's Friday, it's FREAKANGELS: in which, no, there's really not a drain in that little hole in the ground.

It's foggy enough here this morning it may as well be pouring down rain -- eeeeeverything's damp, even inside. That last may be because I left all the windows open. Again, I find myself contemplating the possibility of hot, mulled Red Bull. Probably not, though. How's everyone else?

Other than that, the world is good. And Freakangels this week has that simmering feeling that says something'll go BANG next week or the week after. Lovely.

 Bumsticks!

:o)

Congratulations on the 400 pages!

I loved the rainstorm and actually wished that I could be there in it. Not sure why. I think that spending 2 weeks in Southern Spain with no air conditioning did that to me.

Yes, why doesn't Luke change the weather rather than just complain about it, if he's so powerful?
I think that Kait has also played around with her package to see what else she can do, as shown by the last couple of pages. I wonder what kind of security system she has - a mental link to a video camera? Some kind of trap set up?

6 years ago they brought the flooding upon London and we still don't know how except that it was a mistake. Maybe they were experimenting or were high or drunk. Hmmm. I want to know more!

Because she's the only one of them that's actually stretched her powers to find out what she can do? Remember when the others were so shocked that she could teleport?

My understanding was that Luke is saying it's possible, but that all of them - except Arcady (and Mark, we assume) - are wasting their powers by not trying things out

You know, I was about to say that this volume has been a bit more art than words, and then Luke opens his fucking gob.

Every. Damn. Time.

Lovely art, as per usual, and I think Luke's just needling Kirk. If he's such hot shit, why won't he just bust on out? I think it's because Luke rather relishes being a prick. He's not just a prick, he enjoys being a prick. And here I used to think he was just misunderstood.

Awaiting the shitstorm, and hoping Luke gets what's coming. But, being an Ellis story, who knows what "what's coming" is?

Oh, and I'm having leftover Papa John's Cinnapie and Mountain Dew for breakfast. This is to cope with the general shitty feeling of being turned down for a job in the middle of the beginning of a house hunt (that makes sense, I swear) and trying to deal with a less-than-ideal financial situation. At least I've got some good, free comics to read, and my wife's been getting a ton of free shit from work. So, bad with the good, and all that.

I think it was indicated (or presumed on here) that Luke could bust himself out, or hurt Kirk, or any number of things, except that he's busy stopping bloodloss and trying to mend himself. I doubt he could alter the weather AND continue to stanch the flow of blood.

I particularly liked the feel of this installment, especially the dialogue-free lead-in. Loved the mood.

@ Paul - Your artwork continues to develope in wonderful ways. I was reading through from the beginning, again, and enjoyed watching you find the characters and explore the settings, creating a rich world for us. It's interesting to compare the beginning versions of the characters with how they look now, they've become much more solid, more real. I thoroughly enjoyed the lovely art you gave us today, thank you.

--On a side note, is it just my computer, or is the bottom of page 2 not filled in (colors glitching out to solid grey)?

I've been trying to make my style more solid, so I'm glad it seems to have worked.
I think the page 2 thing is most likely a glitch on your end. Hmmm... My take on Luke goading Kirk to change the weather is that once Kirk gets provoked enough he'll attempt to change the weather..which means he's going to take his mind off Luke and Luke will have a better chance to escape.

I think Kirk might actually get provoked into that, he seems like the stony face type with lots of emotions broiling inside. ^_^

Or maybe I'm off on a wrong track here?

(Well, at least I get provoked just reading Luke's words.=P)

I actually thought it was him, Mark, and KK (and I still think KK slept with Luke) and I figured that if there would be another one to change their ways about, it would be KK next.

Luke hinting that someone could change the weather seems to me like a pretty blatant gloat that someone is changing the weather. Especially due to the fact that he's mentioning Mark too. If the big M doesn't get introduced by the end of volume 3 (definitely in the last 6 pages) in some kind of wonderful cliffhanger, I'll be really surprised.

Freakangels Friday was pretty great for me, not only did I get the number of the cutest girl in a coffee shop (and free coffee), I also found a 50 year old antique copy of 'The Complete Stories and Poems of Edgar Alan Poe' in a second hand book shop. Black nail polish and gothic velvet blazers really work wonders on the fairer and oh so pliable sex. Totally makes up for my French girlfriend dumping my arse for being a chaud lapin.

Hope everyone is well, especially tireless Ariana, without whom there would be no Freaks :P

I agree with the others who say that Luke is too busy dealing with the bullets to fuss with the weather. Though it did seem to be quite coincidental when the rain started. Part of me does agree with Luke - they should be trying to figure out what they can do, but part of me is wary, because that could go horribly wrong.

My week is fine. I work now and it wears me out thoroughly. I really want a computer because I'm getting too tired to go to the library after work. Some of the people at work are fun though. Aside from wanting a computer, I'd also like a social life. Stat. At least I did some shopping today. And apparently people in the 70s had impossibly small ribcages, because mine is small and I could not fit into those dresses.

Also, if some cute boys could show up and be very flirty, that would also be very cool.

*le sigh*

Also, Dee_Noir, sweet! It's an established fact that the Freakangels can scan for bio-signs/surface thoughts [ episode 36, page 3, out of Kait's own mouth ] but I'm tempted to say that what she's doing here is more like psychometry. Makes sense that Kait would be good at object reading like that. Also seems like an ability that would be generally similar to scanning for bio-signs and so on.

I'm still a little dumbfounded that Luke would let himself get shot: even if he was pretending to be unconscious it seems hard to believe he wouldn't see it coming. But that's my problem.
I do agree with the idea that he's possibly trying to get Kirk to drop his guard, but I get the idea he's leagues ahead of him already. I certainly don't believe those shackles mean anything, even with a bullet in each of his legs.

I can't shake the idea that Luke's in league with Mark. He certainly hasn't been given any reason not to be, that's damn sure.

I'm still wondering what exactly he did back when that turned him into such an outsider in the group...learning more about the time Arkady, Mark and he spent together in the past will be revealing, no doubt. I suspect we know who Arkady got the dope from, now.

I've got a really sly feeling that there's more going to between Luke and Arkady than meets the eye. Could it be possible that they have a history, pre-Kadys overdose, back when they had the most in common and were both genuinely interested in exploring 'the package'? I wouldn't be even remotely shocked to find out they were a couple once upon a time - it explains the antagonistic relationship between the two and why Kady remembers to keep an eye on him, when she's feeling particularly lucid. Also, have you noticed that people with metal defects in film/tv/comics are always portrayed as quirkly and lovable, like a damn Ellen Page protagonist. I'm just saying that is pisses me off whenever I seriously contemplate it. Madness and imbalance is always conveyed as 'sexy' and 'interesting' when really it is none of those things. Or as Kirk Lazarus says in Tropic Thunder, 'You don't go full retard'.

@ Gekko - Hot rabbit? I was like darling, wtf? Ah, how slang is so often lost in translation.
@ Trini - You don't need luck, just find someone attractive whos reading a thick dusty book on art history/ psychology/ the rime of the ancient mariner, and amble over and say 'Hey, hope you don't mind, I'm looking for something new to read, is that book any good?' How lonely, bored, and desperate for human companionship and external validation will determine their reaction. Sometimes they'll be really cold and dismissive, sometimes you can walk with a number and a date within two minutes. Just practice, practice, practice. Or go over and say 'Have you ever heard of Warren Ellis' and Paul Duffields comic book, Freakangels 'cos it's fucking awesome, look here's a copy I bought ages ago, I'd let you touch it but you haven't been to the mikveh yet.' She's pretty obviously taking Luke's "We have power. We should Do Something about these people hunting us" and putting it into a concrete, real-world form. I get the feeling that Luke's always been something of a gadfly and pariah, the chosen Devil's Advocate. Arkady, on the other hand, seemed more like a force, a leader. Grow, expand, develop or just wither and wallow and then finally run away again. They haven't done that. Taking in the refugees was one step in them Growing (The Fuck) Up. NOW what? Plus, the paranoia about Mark's guerilla tactics (WHICH NOT ALL OF THEM KNOW ABOUT. Or do they? Wasn't the (mortar-aborted) meeting in the FreakCave supposed to be about Mark, Alice, wtf? They're all linked but they can shield. Did they know about Luke's previous rape attempt (and 'Kady stopping it) or is this all going to come out at the trial? Will there be a trial? (Regardless, Kirk and Karl have doubts about Mark being dead. So does Kait.)

As an aside, is the 'K' sound part of the package? Mark, Luke, Miki, Jack, Sirkka (two 'k's), Arkady, Caz (no 'k'), Connor, (no 'k') Kait, Kirk, Karl, KK (nothing BUT 'k's). This means something, beyond simple nomenclature. (I could be wrong. And most likely am.) Does it matter where in your name the 'k' is? (My brother has a bizarre theory that if you have an 'R' in your name, the law doesn't apply to you. Jokingly, like. I'd have to disagree with you though - I don't think the K sound has any special importance, it's just a little writers flourish like giving them all purple eyes.

 @Dee
here's the flashback

@Mister Hex
I don't think that they're so directionless right now. Before, when Mark was still with them, and Arkady was all hairy, they were being hunted. Their goal was to not die. Not be captured or killed. And now, they're not being hunted anymore, so now, they can stop concentrating on not dying, and start living. You have to build from the bottom up. Get people. Teach them that the FAs run the show. Give people a little security. Build your society. And deal with shit as it comes along.

I don't think you can say they're directionless right now, because we've only seen a couple days of their lives.

Also, they've got chickens now, which is a step away from succeeding to death ;)

But I don't think she thinks or works like Luke does at all.

Hmmm trying to dip into the discussion (since there are 3.5 days to wait until the next episode).

@Mister Hex- I noticed the K- theme too. I don't know if there is a reason or not (as a writer, I'm all about names, personally, I pick a lot of D's. Perhaps there was a lot of K's on the mind at the time.) Arkady, Sirkka and KK's name are ones I've never heard of (naturally, KK's), but all interesting nonetheless.

The Chikkens..lol...I was in Chick-fla-a today (they have the best chicken sandwiches..btw) thinking about their "Eat mor Chikin" motto (that's how it spelled too) and how cool it would be to have a "No Chikkenz shirt.

Luke...I know he's not really a favorite, but I'm not counting him out and I don't think he will be offed no time soon. I kinda wonder how he managed to be friends with them at all, he seems barely tolerated. The other FreakAngels seem to have a system with each other, a job, a purpose. Luke's purpose seems to be, being gutter trash, they don't think about him until they have to think about him. I wouldn't particularly care how everyone felt about anything if I was treated like crap by everyone who came by (not saying that he doesn't deserve the treatment he gets, but it had to start somewhere). He looks good enough to talk his way into some panties (mines at least), it's a pity he chose to make someone do what he could have asked (unless he finds that demeaning of his power).

I just have theories because I don't really understand Luke, but I'm willing to follow his rabbit hole to see where it goes. He interests me and he's useful in his own ways (I agree that they could have been living better and doing better, that doesn't excuse his actions, but I understand that). I believe that Mark is useful also as a known unknown lurking out there. I don't think Mark is part of the current arc other than Luke possibly feeling a little resentful of Mark's ousting. I don't want to judge Mark because we have yet to see him, despite the charges against him. Maybe Mark is just a jerk. Luke? I'm sure there is more than that to him.

_Said flashback... Arkady did seem cold and clinical about the whole affair, but I don't know if she was agreeing or disagreeing with anyone, more like speculating about the power they have and what they could do with it.

Bumsticks is a funny little word (unheard of where I come from). I can't help but to love Kait, though I pity Phil and them when she finds them.

I love how these threads are just getting more and more wildly speculative as we pass the 400 page mark. Not often prone to such analysis myself, but it's fun to read you all's theories. Personally, this week was another tension-building art explosion for me. Paul, your panel layouts are absolutely awe-inspiring lately. You're hitting every beat. And yes, definitely more solidity in the later work. Plus the colouring is just absolutely gorgeous. I could look at this week's p5 all day, just for the pale shimmer of Kait's special Super Detective Eye.

Let it rain!

@ texture - the speculation's been flying thick and fast for a while now. It's part of the fun, being wrong. ANALYSIS is what I value about these threads. Johnjones, among others. It's like talking about Coronation Street with other fans. (I once had a pleasant chat with a man in the bank about Coronation Street. The teller asked me who my weekend was and I said "Man! Danny Baldwin died!" and the guy at the next teller went "Did you SEE that? Ohmygod!" and we had a five-minute discussion about it. )

But yes, analysis. As it becomes more and more popular (BEST WEBCOMIC is a needed category at the HARVEY'S & EISNER'S & all other such awards, if it isn't already. FA gets my vote.), and more people come tripping through this site, it's up to us to helpfully point them in the right direction, decorum-wise and such-like.

It's interesting, really, how much speculation this story invites.

I still think this is the best told story Warren has written yet. A big fat onion of a story, with layers between layers between layers all slowly being peeled back, at times revealing and at other times obscuring the overall whole of the thing. There's so much we know, and the more we discover the more we find we still have yet left to discover.
And the characters are such fully developed and realized personalities, and continue to grow and change and surprise us in truly organic and believable ways. We've been shocked and delighted and roused and let down by them. The more we get to know them the more we find there is to learn about them, and the more we want to learn about them.

And that's what keeps us all guessing, and more importantly, coming back week after week. It invites speculation even as it defies it.

For all the guessing, we have no idea what's going to come next, and that's just as it should be. That's the mark of a superior piece of fiction.

Let's not jump too quickly on the the idea of Mark being an omniscient super-villain.
It doesn't have to be Mark sending out drone room service right? if that's what happened I mean. There are others who could do it like any of the unseen FA's or even Arkady who might regret having rescued Luke way back at the beginning, and who is known to monkeywrench on her own. I've always wondered what her statement "it's getting worse" really meant in light of her playing independently with future events. You can make stuff a lot worse by playing with future events, maybe she was trying to fix what she broke in her own way. I dunno.

I like how there was a hurricane heading toward Scotland in real life when the warning went out in Whitechapel that a storm was coming in. How did that turn out I wonder?
