Been awhile since somebody put something here, but I just think this is an insane development:

There's a project that wants to make fake, robot bees by 2015, with their brains powered by NVIDIA and computer simulations of actual bees.

@John Skylar: These people are obviously insane, since um, bees.

It's certainly an... unusual... solution to the problem of bee colony dieback.

Would be a fun project to work on though I think.

Yeah, it mostly reminds me of that X-Files episode involving robot bugs being used by the spy agencies.

But also there's the unforseen possibility that if they can do this maybe they can try more complex animals, and then eventually...I dunno, Sonic The Hedgehog, anyone?

It just pisses me off that instead of, say, trying to stop spreading bee-killing poisons in the environment, someone thoought "fuck that, let's just replace the bees by robots instead !"

It's okay, the radiation from the Indian Point nuclear reactor will take care of those bacteria the next time they lose containment.

Well, how about sea otters raping baby seals to death ?
Delivered in the scientific deadpan required of such papers, the Aquatic Mammals report attributes the incidents to three male sea otters “observed harassing, dragging, guarding, and copulating with harbor seals,” persisting for up to seven days after the otters killed the objects of their misguided advances. The ordeal must have been horrific for the seals. The victims that were necropsied by veterinarians had lesions around the nose, eyes, flippers, and genitals, including perforations in the vaginal and rectal tracts.
