There was, way back in the mists of... 2007... a recurrent meme among several comics art blogs. Reclaiming characters from their owners, I guess it could be broadly described as... people were reimagining abused characters (chiefly Supergirl) as artistic call-and-response various places, chiefly LiveJournal. In the aftermath of that, I did a similar thing on old messageboard The Engine, called REMAKE/REMODEL. They were embraced as technical exercises, bits of fun, ways to get the brain moving. I think most people's favourite was the dear late Mike Wieringo's wondrous retro-aristo Buck Rogers...

I thought it might be an interesting thing to bring back here. So, once a week, I'll call a character, and you art types here can post images of your reinterpretation of that character. Photography and digital art is also fine, before anyone asks.

    The point is REinterpretation: remake/remodel.

    --

Again, I deliberately withhold art. From 1944, the original Black Orchid:

Glamorous Diana Dawn, district attorney Richard Day's secretary, is - unbeknownst to him - masquerading as the mysterious female sleuth the Black Orchid. She solves crimes with the aid of a magic ring which contains "black gas" that knocks out her opponents. In her first adventure, Black Orchid takes on Doctor Arso to regain some stolen surgical papers, and she fights zombies, too.

If you search out art from Google, I will delete it.

I give you nothing but the above to work on.

    --

Your task, as ever, is to re-invent that into something a 21st Century audience could enjoy.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with, but bear in mind this is an ART thread. No pen-portraits. This is ART ONLY. Posting just a bunch of text, or a scribble and a vast number of words, will get the thread closed and your account banned.

    You have one week. Go.

Oooh! I remember Neil Gaiman's take. I absolutely loved it. Gah. I wish I could draw and/or had my copy of Illustrator loaded and ready to go (that is, I wish I knew how to use it already).

    Unrelated character, I believe.

Another gas-filled ring? Sheesh. Visions of a woman with lethal black-bean burrito farts swirl in my brain... I'll try and avoid drawing any of them.

    Black Orchid, by Oxbrow

I bigged up the ring to a jewel connected by chains to three rings, with a zap effect instead of gas. I may have accidentally reinvented Witchblade as a result.

@izenmania Pretty sure it was his own reimagining, just like Sandman. Not directly related to the 1944 original directly, but there's a lineage.

@Ken Miller: I'd totally wear that on a T-Shirt, or a maybe a patch, even. Nice work, man.

Black Orchid's catchphrase was, unfortunately, open to misinterpretation when applied to her range of branded clothing...

    black orchid remake/remodel

Would've liked to have spent more time on this, but have a busy week ahead, so this, indeed, is it.
