It's Friday, it's FREAKANGELS.

Pushing the comics live a couple minutes early this morning because I don't know how long this wireless connection is going to hold. My modem died this morning -- no blinky lights, no power at all. Not even when I hit it. Really hard. So, I am currently on the EEE at the far side of the house where I get someone's barely-within-range signal (everyone say "thank you anonymous Belkin modem somewhere east of Ariana") and pushing all the necessary buttons before it fades.

How's everyone else?

Thank you anonymous Belkin modem somewhere east of Ariana!

My first thought at the second panel of page 5 was "That's not good." @Wagner - Nope. Look real close.

In the last panel the light bulb would be off to the right, back in the room from the previous panel, behind the door Kait's just walked through - the bent door frame/floor tiling is the clue there.
So we're seeing Kait from a point of view up and to the left of that door, from somewhere in the room she's just entered.

Looks like I was right about Kirk getting his ass handed to him by Luke, too.

"thank you anonymous Belkin modem somewhere east of Ariana"

@ZJVavrek - I'm thinking that they were maybe fresh water containers. Kait didn't seem to interested in them. I would think if she did we would have gotten more than a cursory look at them. But hey, just speculation here. Maybe we'll find out how good WC's fire department is.

@Warren - The resolution of the Kirk/Luke fight is both final and open-ended and it's great. Luke's still a shit, but I like him a tiny, tiny bit more today. He's a rapist, but he's not a murderer. That's going to be some fun moral ground to cover in the future.

@Paul - I loved the composition on page five, panel two. Something about the framing, I think. That's not to say the others (like the fish-eye) aren't good, but that one seemed really simple and direct and effective.

Thanks a ton, team. Always my favorite five minutes of the week.

@rickiep00h - re: the containers - I'm with you. No plumbing in Whitechapel, so water makes sense.

Obviously the place has been occupied ( I'm going out on a limb, but it seems like a sturdy one, so here goes ) and by the evidence I'd say it is/was occupied by Phil, Drew, Tom, and what's-her-name that Kait tenderized just before the rain started.

My God, Paul, you've out done yourself! Take a victory lap won't you! I was already worried for Kait but that fish eye is freaking me out. Even if it's just a different way to view things and not a security camera (powered with what? who has a monitor?) it's damn creepy in a situation that's so tense it's squeaking.

My thoery on Luke is that this is part of his "we're above them" mentality. He can be perfectly dismissive about violating a norm - but hurt a Freakangel worse than they've hurt him? What kind of barbarian would do that? It's a very "more equal than others" superior race mentality. I'm always relieved when something, anything, keeps one person from killing another but this hardly means Luke has improved in my estimation. BTW - now the fucker is armed. More than he was already. If he leaves Whitechapel that could potentially be the worst thing for the 'Angels.

I'm ok. Off in a little bit to help my mom at her classroom. Late night last night with good friends. Only upright this morning because I didn't drink much and the coffee has extended to three cups. My very own the-gods-are-saying-something miracle.

Bagel cream cheese, big cup of coffee and Freakangels. The boss is out today, so I can start my Friday easy.

It's a small thing, but I was struck by the transition from Luke walking out of the pit toward the outside world to Kait walking deeper into the confines of the wrecked house. The back views of both characters and the fall of water into the hallway made the change smooth and seemed to tie the danger in the two sequences together. How will Luke's situation and Kate's be tied together as the story progresses?

Ignoring the opinion that Kirk needs an attitude adjustment...

The last time, I can recall, we saw a fisheye view was when Luke was using his powers on the poor girl he raped. If it holds true, this could be a sort of from the FA point of view when the package is in use. I.E. Mark concealed and observing, about to unleash Freak-powers? Though it doesn't feel to me like he'll be there... maybe I'm just skeptical because it's been so long since the threat of him was introduced in the beginning, I've grown lazy toward the threat of Mark (as have the FA, of course). It will probably be another "norm" hiding in some crawl-space or nook above and behind her.

@daecabhir - yeah, waiting for one to turn up... having known what was going on and swooping in to save the day.

As always gentlemen, beautiful work, thank you. And, of course, thank you Ariana!

It's been a weird week. This is my first time on the computer this week (work leaves me too tired to go to the library). My grandfather watched Biggest Loser and has decided that I am to lose weight and am now banned from ice cream and have to go on a walk daily. I lost my job due to the recession - they'd hire me back as soon as they could afford to but they're a family run business that isn't even really paying themselves so... I have to look for a new job. Otherwise I think I'm getting more and more of my creative mojo back and damn is it pretty around here, even if it is almost fall.

I'm very curious to see what's going to happen next with Kait. I also wonder why none of the other freakangels are catching on what went on between Luke and Kirk.

Oh and thank you to the Belkin modem east of Ariana!

It doesn't seem all that long, in the time frame of the story, since we were first told about Mark. By my count, we've only seen a few days, with an uncounted break between the time that the new people were brought in and the dead body was found. Considering the apparently small amount of work that's been completed, I wouldn't say that the break was more than a few weeks.

That said, the "fish-eye" could very well signal that one of the killers watching Kait from above. Or it could be Mark using a "norm" as his eyes.

@MrMonk - When so much happens in such a little amount of time, things get "set on the back burner". After discovering that Mark was causing problems, they fell under seige twice and then took in a bunch of new people that needed treating and housing. They also started a bunch of new projects. I don't think they have been thinking about Mark much in the few weeks we've seen. They may be now, since Luke's behaving like him, I hope they are. ...Besides, I meant long to us, not them. How many months has FreakAngels been going for? Yeah, it's been a while since the "threat of Mark" was introduced.

Registered an account to specifically say this, as no-one has seemed to notice/think of it before.

As much of a dick Luke is, I get the feeling that he wanted to help Kirk in someway, considering his brief talk with Kirk on how the Angels had never explored the true limits of their package (Arkady excluded of course). It seems that Luke wanted Kirk to further his powers by telling him to concentrate on pushing the bullet out? Would Kirk have had prior knowledge on how to do this? Thanks to Ariana's unknowing WiFi donor!

Innnnnnnnnnnnteresting. In terms of self-preservation, it does make sense for Luke not to kill Kirk. There wouldn't be a trial and he would have no chance at all to spout off. But still, shooting Kirk, emphasizing that he could have killed him but didn't, and then walking away? Maybe it's just taking the second shot because Kirk shot him twice, but I think there's more going on in his twisty creepy head than self-preservation and revenge.

I thought gas with the cans, too, but given the state of the world, that doesn't seem as likely. And if it were gas and set up as a trap, Kait would have smelled it. I wonder who is watching? I still think we're too early in for it to be Mark. We're still only one week or so from Alice showing up in Whitechapel. While Mysterious Killer could be another "present" from Mark, the way Alice was, I don't think it's Mark himself. Kait's watcher might not be Mysterious Killer, but given that she's at this spot investigation, I'm fairly sure whoever is watching is at least associated with Mysterious Killer.

This episode really felt too short! Next Friday is too far away!

I love that we keep getting more and more pieces that gradually change and complete our pictures of the various characters. I'm starting to get more of a handle on Luke. For one thing, his "master race" schtick isnt abstract. It's very concrete. It's very much "you and me agaisnt the world." In Luke's head, he and his "brothers and sisters" are superheroes and avengers and conquerors all rolled into one. It's "us against them" and "us" won, so "them" can suck on that and learn to swim.

Mark's banishment shook that to some degree, but Luke could commit to that. In his superhero world, it's possible for a hero to become a villain, but even the villain may yet come to see the light and return to the fold. But Alice, Alice is different. She's part of Them. And now she's supposed to be one of Us. This silly, stupid cow comes into Our town to kill Us, and suddenly she's more a part of Us than I am, is what he thinks. And I think that enrages him on a very deep level. Dinner and the various replies were on the mass call, so Luke would've known Alice was going to the Freakcave. All the mortor team did was provide an opportunity.

Also, check out page 5 of episode 58 and notice how the Luke's victim has blonde hair like Alice and her face looks a little similar as well. She also looks close to the same age and body type. And remember that rape is ultimately a crime of violence, anger and power.

I think we're expecting more of their telepathy than might be fair. Like any of their other powers, they need to concentrate ( even if just a little ) to use them - and even then they only share what they want to share. Unless they're hung over maybe.

Kirk is a little preoccupied for a few minutes, I'd imagine, with his wounds. Luke sure as shit stinks won't call. Kait never does, because she's Kait.

And right now a whopper of a storm is pounding down on Whitechapel, so I imagine soon we'll see just how busy the rest of the Freakangels are. After all, Jack has his boat to think about, and KK has her...flying thingy to look after as well. Karl has his garden to think about ( up in the air on metal poles - that should be fun.. ) and Caz her projects, and so on...with Kirk 'busy' someone is probably making sure the tower doesn't fall over. I doubt Alice wants to be up there.

I guess I'm what I'm saying is they probably have more immediate concerns or distractions, and naturally assume everyone else does too. If someone tries to call Kirk, that's a different story.

( Also, seeing Kirk/Luke shooting each other repeatedly without psychic ill effects or repercussions, I'm guessing it's safe to say there's nothing 'automatic' about it. Extending that, if one dies, it stands to reason the rest won't suffer any sort of effect unless they're actively connected - and even that might not be more traumatic than having a television you're watching turned off. Why would it be? )

True, but we saw Sirkka notice Luke use his powers on his ex... he certainly wasn't projecting then. Arkady also inexplicably showed up at the ex's apartment to stop him, and Sirkka showed up in the alley right after he used his powers on the girl he raped. She couldn't have been summoned by Caz, because she got there too fast (not having the teleporting skill down yet, I assume) and she is the least likely to be "in the neighborhood".

I don't think they have to actively send, but I know they have to actively "screen" according to Karl and Kait.

Only just managed to read this week's ep - got home from overseas to find that my landline was (and still is) completely dead, and as there are no conveniently open wireless networks nearby it's no interwebs for me! (honestly, it's like coming home to find someone's stolen all my lightbulbs and bricked up the windows...)

Just about everything I could say about the episode has already been said by various people, so I'll just throw in statements of support for the theories of Luke play-acting as 'the superior race' by not killing Kirk, the canisters being for water (I think you can see similar ones being loaded onto the water cart in Book One), and someone about to jump out of the shadows and try to brain Kait (not that I actually expect them to succeed, or for that matter survive).

(Oh, and for the other obsessive nutters like myself the house Kait's investigating is right at the bottom end of Back Church Lane, just south of the railway line - I'll add it to my Google Earth map as soon as I get my net access back).

Edit: Oh yeah, and my signed and sketched copy of Book One *and* my copy of Book Two were waiting for me when I got back. @rickiep00h - To be specific, Jack gave him the gun. After waiting around for everyone else to leave.

While his specific motive was never mentioned, it seems to imply that he was acting in confidence rather than from majority consent. After all, if they'd all agreed that Kirk should/needed to be armed while guarding Luke, it seems the best candidate for handing over a tool would have been Kait.

Especially if that tool comes with a silencer on it.

So I can't help thinking that there will be some profound issues arising from the fact that a few decided to go above and beyond the group in dealing out justice, to say nothing of the complete ass-up they made of it. So far as the rest know they're still waiting to hold court on Luke. If they weren't interested in that then Caz and Sirkka would have just done him in there in the alley when they found him initially.

I can't see there not being some sort of falling out because of this. I'm not saying the group will splinter or anything, but there's definitely going to be a different relationship between some of them after this.

I'm playing catch-up on this week's installment of "Freakangels." Actually, I read part of it at a Sony store on one of those tiny hand-held computers that made Paul Duffield's detailed art look like a newspaper's postage stamp reproduction of a comic strip. Or maybe I'm just a big viewing screen sort.

Anyhow, a bit surprised to see that Luke didn't kill Kirk. Was the "I spared your life" gambit a head trip designed to show that Luke is not the monster Alice and Sirkka believe him to be?

The fish-eye POV raises questions regarding its source. If it's an observation camera, how's it being powered? If it's a peephole, how come Kait didn't detect a mind of some sort? If this is the rogue Freakangel spying on Kait and masking his presence, then she is in serious trouble.

As for life, I got back from a trip to Las Vegas with relatives. The Strip's architectural excess left me cold after a while. The surfeit of men and women trying to look beautiful made me yawn after a bit as well. Having to walk in mid-90s degree weather for a couple dozen very long city blocks palled after awhile.

Yet I managed to find a few interesting things. Best experiences were: visiting the Liberace Museum and trying on a sample Liberace outfit, dropping in on the Pinball Hall of Fame and getting my geek on with a vintage Dr. Who pinball game featuring the first seven Doctors, and seeing Lauren Mc Cubbin's installation art piece depicting the socio-economic web that constitutes the world of the average Las Vegas sex worker.
