More screen real estate than anyother, hackability beyond anything else i've encountered. i use it for : games (psp-ps1 emulated/ emulators" snes, GBA, new, genesis), mp3,wma, any video i want from any source (thanks to some indie developers), photos, plus wireless internet, and a hack that allows me to use an old IR palm keyboard for IMing. PLUS more stuff from indie developers like sequencer/synth warez.

I can play media on it, and also write tracks, and even shoot video and photos with the third party camera attachment. I've got it set to use third part applications, some of which can be very handy. The edge internet connection has normally been fast enough for whatever I've need, and the built in wifi is nice. Plus I like the interface for the music player. No controls, just touch and go. Plus the ebook reader app I downloaded is a very nice bonus. I also like that that it can play music while you do other things like read an ebook, browse the net, write emails. It's just a very handy all in one machine.

I received an 80 gig Ipod Classic for the holidays. It's the first mass storage media player I've ever owned, and I have mixed feelings about it.

On the one hand, I like the design and interface, it slips into my back pocket easily enough. The video resolution on that little screen in outstanding. Plus, 80 gigs is HUGE. So I can pretty much store anything I want on there, supposedly. I'm absolutely addicted to Podcasts, I'm subscribed to about 40 of them. And basically, it's nice to have all my music, photos, podcasts, videos, ebooks and anything else I feel like carting around with me on one slick little device. I have an FM transmitter for use in any vehicle with a radio, and battery powered compact speakers that will piss off my neighbors if I turn them up all the way.

On the other hand, ITunes is a piece of crap. It will just freeze during syncing and NOTHING, I mean nothing will get it to close, or restart short of turning the fucking power off. I get strange errors for no apparent reason when I try to sync the 10 gigs or so of video I want to store on it. I've had to restore the IPod three times since I got it, and I've purged and reloaded ITunes twice. I'm thinking of trying a third party program to sync it with. I'm afraid to store anything on it permanently because it might go into "recovery Mode" and I'll lose everything. Annoying.

All in all, I love this toy, but it keeps breaking my heart.

-CD

@Ariana- Holy crap I want one of those. Short playtime be damned.

My first media player was a 10gig third generation ipod. I had to replace it almost a week after I got it due to some strange compatibility error with my PC that caused it to melt. Not shitting you. The firewire port I had just kept pouring the power in until the plastic front decided to just sneak off thataways. The battery conked out on the replacement last year, which is amazing as I got it in 2003.

I tried using a PSP, but the fact that I couldn't make playlists easily as well as the lack of space annoyed me. My memory card could only hold so much music and games. Though that thing did help me kill a ridiculous amount of time on the subway.

The DS is okay, but I'm running into the same issue. As well, the programs I've found haven't really been as pretty or smooth as the psp's. I use an R4 to read the card, but haven't gotten too into the homebrew scene for it. The possibility of better programs out there hits me every once in a while. This is usually when I just start whipping the shit out of vampires and forget about it. Waiting for weeks on a program that *might* work gets pretty frustrating when you don't have the time or knowledge to work on/improve it yourself.

The winner for me is a 4gig ipod nano that I won in a contest that took me five minutes to complete. *No, I don't have a site that you "ReeAlly NeEEd To sign UP for!"* Tiny, holds enough music that it only takes me a month or so to get bored and works with my computer. Hooray.

Also, that's the first picture I've ever seen of a Zune. Strange.

First mp3 player for me was an Archos Gmini 202s, which was basically a 20gig hard drive with a monochrome LCD player and headphone output. It felt cheaply made, the interface was ugly and glitchy, it gave you a two second pause between songs and the preset EQ options ranged from servicable to downright bizarre. It needed patches for everything.

And I loved it to bits. I loved the fact that I could cram the majority of my music collection on there and still have a couple of gigs spare. I loved its lumpy ugliness. I loved the way that it was so broken that you felt you had to pick it up after every song just to make sure that it would skip to the next track without seizing up. And I nearly married it when I realised that, after a few months of using it, I'd been using it's dinky navigation nipple (for want of a better word) to select tracks and sort out volume without even taking it out of my jacket pocket to look at it.

And, after a year and a half, long after its battery life had dropped from 8 hours to twenty minutes, I accidently dropped it on the way to work. And it died. And I sulked for a month until my wife bought me a 4gig iPod Nano for my birthday.

The iPod's nice and all, and a darn sight fancier. But while I stare into its come-hither colour display and hold its curvy mettalic gleam and touch its strokeable clickwheel, I hope it doesn't notice that I'm secretly imagining that I'm using the Archos.

I have had for years the 20 gig ipod photo. Finally died (overused the hard disc, kept on freezing whenever it felt like), so just bought myself one of the small new 4 gig nanos. The fact that they put video support on something so small still amazes me. I have a mini disc walkman as well, but the batteries don't last long enough on it anymore, and pulling out the larger mini disc recorder to copy music again (it's one of the early models without the fast dub/digital copying) is a pain. Plus it's getting harder and harder to buy blank minidiscs...

Back in the day, I actually managed to buy a mini disc album. Got Radiohead's The Bends. The only ones I ever saw in stores were the Radiohead and Jamiroquai collections.

My Samsung P2 8GB arrived Friday, and so far it not too shabby. It's Samsung's answer to the iPod Touch, and it does a pretty good job. It switches out the wi-fi for Bluetooth which doesn't break my heart because my car stereo allows for Bluetooth audio streaming. The internal mic allows you to pair it with a bluetooth phone, and use the P2 as a "headset" (although you end up looking like Captain Kirk talking in to a communicator). My previous iPod was a first generation (or second?) 1 GB Nano, and it was more or less enough space as I never really leave my computer for that long. And while I don't have a problem filling 8GB worth of storage, I have a feeling that there's going to be quite a few forgotten tracks collecting dust.

The one thing that I do miss about my iPod is how easy it synched up with iTunes. I hate iTunes, but atleast it made managing the iPod easy. The Samsung comes with a media manager that is much clunkier than iTunes, but seems to get the job done. (And it has a passable podcast collector. Time will tell if I need to switch to Winamp or something of the like).

Having the 30 gig Creative Zen Vision M has made me realise how ridiculous that kind of size is for the majority of time I use it. It was perfect for the 6 months of travelling I did with it nearly 2 years ago, but like you said, there's a landscape of music that I've either not touched or haven't made any effort to return to. I think even an 8 gig iRiver might be a little bit like overkill for the journey to work or the week(end) away. I guess it comes down to how audio rich you want your music to be.

Besides my laptop, I just have half gig solid-state MP3 player.

The Mobiblu Cube. I think I bought it three years ago, and the second generation came out in early 2007. It's a goofy MP3 player - a one-inch cube. My 1st gen doesn't do video or pictures, but it will do Korean/Chinese/Japanese characters. The 2nd gen, as the clip demonstrates, plays video. On a 0.25 square inch screen.

It doesn't fit well in a pocket unless you wear cargo pants. The headphones are also a necklace, so the player is dangling in front of you while you're wearing it. I've always liked it. It's rare that someone doesn't ask me about it when I wear it, though.
