What're you listening to?

New week's releases are up at http://www.piccadillyrecords.com on Monday morning - just choose a genre from left and click "magic mix" to stream excerpts from the new releases.

Ariana usually swings by Largehearted Boy's Try it before you buy it posts on Tuesday mornings, too.

Commence playlist speakage.

Right now I'm listening to a lot of High Wolf. My last.fm scrobbler's been choking, so apparently my Top Artists of the last seven days looks like:

1    Fuck Buttons    31
2    Zola Jesus    30
3     Saturn Finger    29
4     High Wolf    26
5 The Black Heart Procession 22
6    Nudge    19
7    Vowels    11
8     The Minimal Militant    6
8    My Bloody Valentine    6
8    múm    6
11     Explorers    3
12    baroquedub    2
13    Steely Dan    1
13    Clorinde    1
13    Yeah Yeah Yeahs    1

			 Fuck Buttons are great. I recently lost my iPod BUT I FOUND IT AGAIN TODAY HOORAY, so now I'll be listening to Sweet Love for Planet Earth on the bus home.

Aside from that I'm currently playing Oceansize's cover of Walking in the Air, which is absolutely epic and puts a stupid grin on my face. I recently bought Mastadon's Crack the Skye and am loving that. Pelican's The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw is a personal favourite, and Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion is always close by if I want to jump around a bit. And at the end of the day me and my girlfriend tend to zone out to either Mogwai's Zidane Soundtrack, or Sigur Ros' ( ).

			 Yes, I am hideously late to the conversation, but I finally got a copy of Merriweather Post Pavilion. Haven't listened to Animal Collective before, being frightened away by their experimental tendencies. But this stuff is great. 'My Girls' is just glorious. I get what our Internet Jesus is saying about them. Personally, I can handle the sugariness. Listening to Los Campesinos! gives you a pretty good vaccination.

Speaking of which, those guys have a new band-member called Kim and a new single called 'The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future'. Bit stadium rock-y. But in a good way.

			 @Rob Diston:
Hey, I've been meaning to check out the Tyondai Braxton record; is it any good?
As for jazz recommendations, and apart from the great artists you already mentioned, I really dig "The Shape of Jazz to Come" by ORNETTE COLEMAN, pretty much anything by ERIC DOLPHY and "The Black Saint and Sinner Lady" by CHARLES MINGUS. Also, early 60's recordings by BILL EVANS; he made some really beautiful stuff.

			 @Rob Diston

Mathias already gave you some excellent suggestions, but I'd add Thelonius Monk into the classics selection.

Moving on to the newer material Herbie Hancock (yes yes, started waybackwhen) has a lot of brilliant and highly varied stuff, Sonny Sharrock could play the hell out of an electric guitar, Tim Berne does some very appealingly abstract things. William Parker and Hamid Drake are an invincible rhythm section with anyone. Peter Brötzmann one cracked his ribs by blowing the sax too hard, which should serve as a warning.

			 @Rob Diston:
I would second Matthias' Bill Evans recommendation but would extend it back to Evans' earliest work and farther into the future. He's an amazing pianist, two of my favorite records of his are "Portrait in Jazz" which is from the mid 50s and is very much a moody, cool jazz record and "Conversations with Myself" which is from the 80s I believe and features Evans overdubbing piano and organ lines on top of eachother.

			 @Boga_ Absolutely. Scott LeFaro was the bassist on most of Evans' early stuff (including Waltz for Debbie and all of the Vanguard sessions) and he is widely regarded to be one of the greatest jazz bassists of all time. Unfortunately LeFaro died in a car crash almost immediately after they wrapped at the Vanguard. A true travesty. All of the recordings with LeFaro are basically considered Evans' early period and they sort of meld into the mid period stuff in the mid 60s.

Also, I pulled out my Conversations with Myself record and it seems as though I was way off with the date, looks like it came out in 63 which makes it WAY more amazing!

One more well known tidbit about Evans is that he was the pianist for Miles Davis during the seminal Kind of Blue recordings and actually, I believe, wrote or co-wrote Blue in Green.

And he was a major heroin addict! Yeah!

			 @ infomancer - I'm digging the new AIC record... it sounds a little weird to me because there are songs that would fit on their previous albums, but instead they're all on this new disc. Almost like unreleased songs off Facelift, Dirt, Jar of Flies, and "Tripod" all on one cd. Jerry Cantrell sings a lot more on the album than I thought he would too, not that I mind. The harmonies, which I thought would sound forced, sound incredibly similar to Layne/Jerry dynamic... it's a solid album in my opinion.
