I'm having a time out until I can learn some manners.
Don't know if it's been announced anywhere, but in 2009 and 2010 Top Shelf is going to make it real easy to become well-versed in Eddie Campbell's work by releasing Alec and Bacchus Omnibi.
No word about format, but one hopes they'll be reasonably priced softcovers, perhaps in the $35 price range like we saw for the excellent From Hell Graphic Novel. Maybe $40, to account for inflation by 2009-2010.
Considering recent conversations around the blogosphere, anyone think these won't be convention debuts? http://www.fantagraphics.com/index.php?option=com_myblog&show=Thoughts-on-convention-sales..html&Itemid=113 One might hope they are, because it might mean Top Shelf flying Eddie Campbell to the conventions and paying him lots of money.

ALEC (LIFE-SIZE OMNIBUS)
"Alec is magic, and even if I knew how all of it was done I'd be doing you a disservice if I pointed out the wires and mirrors. ... It is written by someone who obviously finds being alive an endless source of novelty and conundrum." -- Alan Moore
While a few of you may only know Eddie Campbell through his collaboration with Alan Moore on FROM HELL, Eddie has published (or been a part of) an impressive 200 comic books and graphic novels to date; with most of that work centering around his two great continuities: ALEC (a.k.a. Alec MacGarry) and BACCHUS (a.k.a. Deadface).
If this surprises you, it's probably due to the unserialized nature of many of his releases — something that’s about to be cured with the Omnibus collections of both ALEC and BACCHUS…
ALEC is a brilliant and insightful romp through Eddie's life, and it represents one of the best — and first! — works in the autobiographical-comics genre. In it, we witness Eddie's progression from "beer to wine," or to put it more accurately, his inevitable maturation through time. Whether it's tales of his early pub-crawlin' days, or glimpses into his current private life with "wifey" and kids, there are "truths" here that transcend the factual and paint a picture of the way life should be.
The ALEC (LIFE-SIZE OMNIBUS) will collect all the stories from THE KING CANUTE CROWD, THREE PIECE SUIT, HOW TO BE AN ARTIST, AFTER THE SNOOTER, as well as the very early out-of-print ALEC stories and tons of bonus material. It will definitely be the definitive ALEC tome.

BACCHUS (TWO-VOLUME OMNIBUS)
"Bacchus mixes air hijacks and ancient gods, gangland drama and legends, police procedural and mythic fantasy, swimming pool cleaners and classics. It shouldn't work, of course, and it works like a charm. ... Eddie Campbell is the unsung King of comic books. ... The man's a genius, and that's an end to it." -- Neil Gaiman
“Though one often gets in trouble when saying things like this, I'd like to go on record as stating the following: ‘Bacchus is the ultimate comic book!’ Why? Because, by some creative miracle, it possesses every possible quality one could hope for: a unique and engaging art style; a brilliantly crafted and intriguing story; completely believable and captivating characters; an undercurrent of humor, sarcasm, and irony; a thought-provoking subtext full of social and political realism; a well-researched examination of history; and, yes — I'll admit it! — superheroes. In its own weird way, Bacchus is actually a revisionist-superhero tale told in epic Greek proportions.” -- Chris Staros, THE STAROS REPORT - 1996
BACCHUS is a wild and hilarious mythological adventure imbued with unparalleled social and political insight. It's a story of a few Greek gods who have somehow managed to survive the last four millennia. And even though they're the "wisest" and most powerful beings on Earth, they can't seem to rise above the whirlwind of petty grudges and skirmishes that bind them.
The BACCHUS (TWO-VOLUME OMNIBUS) will collect all 1,000 pages of the BACCHUS saga — yes, that’s ONE THOUSAND PAGES!! — the entire epic in two giant 500-page volumes (Vol 1 ISBN 978-1-60309-026-1, Vol 2 ISBN 978-1-60309-027-8). It’s time that this long out-of-print masterpiece be introduced to an entirely new comics generation.
I already have the Alec books, but might consider the big book if the new (old) stuff seems worth it.
Some of the best comics made by anyone anywhere. Like something awesome made by that friend you've known forever, who just tells the best and funniest stories.
I have all the Alec books, but the Bacchus books are increasingly hard to find, and an easy two volume collection of the whole thing is magnificently welcome. And the extra stuff in the Alec Omnibus is obviously worth a look.
I've bought every Alec book as they came out, so this will be the fourth time I buy some of this stuff... Funny though, as much as I like Alec, I've never clicked with Bacchus, just doesn't engage me at all.
