I was thinking of starting a general thread to discuss this topic, but there's possibly about to be some news in this area that expedited it. Massive news. Really big.
Oh, fuck it, it'll be all over the web soon anyway, if it's true: Apparently the CFZ has got the Orang Pendek. Which probably means pictures and DNA samples.
Watch this space. I'll post firm news as I find it. -
You know, I believe that there are creatures out there that humans have yet to discover, but I really have a hell of a time taking cryptozoology seriously. I'd like to see this proof. Until then, I remain skeptical. :)

As for the above comment about 'taking cryptozoology seriously' - it isn't all monsters and living dinosaurs. There seem to have been a whole load of new animals discovered recently. -

Amazingly, in the same post that you're responding to I state that I believe that there are creatures out there that humans haven't discovered. Thus I am completely unsurprised by the link you provided. Don't worry, I believe in the legitimacy of zoology as a scientific field. I just am skeptical of cryptozoology. :) -
I don't really see the difference. Only that cryptozoologists look for animals that are rumoured or mythical, instead of just discovering them out of the blue.
As far as crytozoology and discovering 'mythical' animals goes, my money's on three of them: first, the Orang Pendek, which was really always one of the best shots, then; the giant fish in Lake Iliamna in Alaska and really, really big snakes in the Amazon.
I'd give Mokele-Mbembe an outside shot - although more likely as an aquatic rhino rather than a dinosaur- but I'm not holding out much hope for Nessie or Bigfoot. -
@Oddcult -- It would be nice if they found an undiscovered primate in the Sumatran jungle. It'd be especially interesting if it were bipedal. But it'd also be nice to see the proof. That post on cfz.org.uk is a bit of a tease.

I have to say that I love cryptozoology. And I'd dearly love to see a major new ape/primate species discovered, but when the source's latest update is:

@Jess & 256 - the news the CFZ are going to announce has been leaked in quite a few places.
The expedition saw an Orang Pendek, possibly filmed it or took pictures (this may be the surprise they're holding onto, as these pics would be worth an utter fortune in terms of licensing rights), and got hair samples and also samples of plants it has been eating - which may mean DNA from saliva in addition to the hair samples. -
Watching this with some interest - whatever you choose to call the scientific field, finding Weird New Shit is always fun.

This sounds crazy but my husband saw a Brownie/fey in our living room one night.
We'd already seen all the typical infestation signs, things disapearing and reapearing, little balls of light or sparkles in the air. My ex girlfriend (why does she keep coming up in my posts) has a weird brain condition called, ironically E.L.F. (extremely low frequency brain waves), so she sees and senses alot of things we don't. She claimed we had a faerie running around our house, which she thought followed her from her grandparents in Hazard KY (see my post in the Freakangels thread). So one night my hubs got up to go to the restroom at about three in the morning. As he was walking down the hall he looked up and saw this diminutive figure standing in the livingroom, frozen, like a deet caught in headlights. She was about three feet tall with a thin body, rough barklike skin, huge dark eyes and spikey branch like hair. The stared at each other for a moment, then he said "I can see you..." After that he said thought he saw something move off to the side and glanced away for an instant, and when he looked back she was gone. Another instance occured a few months later, when my ex said she saw her sitting in the living room, looking at, of all things, a faery art book we had left sitting out.
I know it all sounds crazy, but I'm just repeating what my family has told me.
Another local cryptid is the giant grey snake that apparently lives in the hollows of Mt. Sterling Ky. My husband's aunt saw it and related her story to my hubs. He looked into it afterwards and found out that his aunt wasn't the first person to see it, and that there was even a news article or two from back in the fourties and fifties about sightings of a great grey serpent.
His aunt was walking one day, and saw a big hole in the earth, like the side of tunnel had caved in, going through the tunnel was a foot and a half thick section of dull dark grey scaled body, sliding past her view. It, naturally scared the shit out of her and she ran. I'd imagine it might be an ancient black snake. I believe their coloration gets lighter as they get bigger, and I'm pretty sure they are the biggest snakes in KY. My mom's boyfriend claimed an eight foot long black snake used to sun itself across his driveway, and every evening when he came home he would have to stop his car, get out, and drag it to the side. He said he didn't complain much, and just kept coming back. Everyone's grandparents around here can tell you about how amphibians and reptiles used to be gigantic compared to what you find around here now. Reptiles usually grow until they die, so I guess most critters here die before they get that old really. Maybe the Mt. Sterling grey snake is just lucky as hell. heh
Personally, besides hearing faery singing and seeing a few balls of light, ghosts, and a few other spooky things, I've seen a local "cryptid" that I feel is rediculous to be considered a cryptid.
My hubs and I saw an appalachian Blue Cat, or a very motherfucking big black panther. Kentucky has wild cats, little stocky, bob tailed cats that sometimes mate with your housecats to create big ass, sometimes bob tailed or ear tufted big ass tabby cats. We also have mountain lions but they are pretty rare, and aren't really that big....but there's reports of black panthers here and the native americans have legends about them. They aren't supposed to exist here (they aren't supposed to be in ireland and scotland either but I'm pretty sure they are), but my husband and I were driving home on day on a backroad (the main entrance was under construction and we had been going around the long way for a couple weeks at that point). Amazingly, on a hill above the road, by a junked out car of all things was a giant black panther, just sitting, crouched, overlooking the road. I slowed the car, and pointed him out to my husband. I wish I had had a camera at the time...sigh...
He was alot bigger than other black panthers I've seen as zoos and whatnot. He had to be about the size of a tiger. -

My bet is on the Megalania Prisca. A reptile reaching 30 feet in length and weighing at least 1,000 pounds or more. The Komodo dragon is roughly the size of a lion, but megalania was bigger than an average dairy cow. Extinct megalania is listed with the many casualties of the Ice Age. People claimed sightings.
Of course they could be channeling old Jonny Quest episodes ... -

The panther could have been a very large Cougar with very dark fur. I was down at Big Bone Lick (real place) state park a few years ago and thought I'd seen a panther; I asked a park ranger and that's what she told me. Apparently they're pretty common in different parts of the state. I imagine the grey snakes could be copperheads suffering from Albinoism. I just looked into it, and it turns out that that variety of snakes, when suffering from the disorder, tend to keep several darker spots making them appear grey.
I've spent a ton of time in the backwoods in Kentucky and Tennessee. The closest I've ever come to seeing anything was on a hunting trip as a boy in the mountains just south of the Kentucky border. I'd split from the group to round a ridge, hoping to drive an elk in front of my dad's group, as I'd been told. about halfway around the ridge, at the farthest point from my family, I saw what I could have sworn was a bigfoot. It was at least six feet tall, standing on two legs like a man. It appeared to be nude, but had large spots of hair around it's neck, legs, etc. As soon as I spotted it (and it caught my scent, I'd reckon) it let out a horrible noise. I blindly fired a shot from my old rifle and bolted. For the next year I'd sworn that I'd seen bigfoot. I refused to go into the woods even with a group, wouldn't go outside at night, anything. The next year I was visiting family in the same area, and learned that a large black bear with mange (or something similar, it was a long time ago) had been killed by the fish and game department after rumors abound that it was rabid. My uncle, a warden, took me to see the body before they disposed of it, and sure enough it was what I'd seen. Ever since then I've been deeply skeptical of cryptids, or tried to be anyway. A huge portion of my dad's family are Cherokee, and many of the stories they've got freak me right the fuck out. -

There are no pictures, of course. They claim to have hair and saliva samples, but (unsurprisingly) it's nothing that can be immediately verified. Why they waited 24 hours to confirm what another site already announced is beyond me. -

Shame, it does indeed sound like bullshit.
We found and photographed very clear footprints in a different area but could not cast them as we couldn't get hold of any plaster of Paris... Dampness screwed the moving camera's battery. It was virtually dead within 48 hours of us reaching Gunung Tuju. We took lots of photos. Dave's moving camera was drained by humidity too.
The plaster of paris excuse sounds pretty flimsy to me - isn't that the exact sort of thing a professional monster hunting team should have on them? I know nothing of how humidity affects cameras, but again, isn't that the kind of setback the team should have been well prepared for? There's plenty of footage filmed in jungles and other humid places - were the team so unprepared as to not even plan for this?
I'd really like this to be true, but it doesn't sound like a lot of scientific rigour went into the operation.
As to the black panther sightings Pooka described, Britain has a fair amount of those, too, including the fabled beast of bodmin moor. Probably 'just' animals set loose from private collections after changes in the law rather than new species, but interesting nonetheless. -

It said the cam batteries were dead, not that the shots had been lost. -
