just an aside, i am going to see the FUCK BUTTONS next month because of this board...i dont even really like them, but after hearing some of what people are on about them on here, i introduced them to my friend who is into that type of stuff moreso than i.

also, i moved all weekend, so the only music i heard was when i saw THE OSS, THE SO_SO GLOS and TITUS ANDRONICUS on saturday night.

then this morning i found out the venue where it was at is not doing shows after december, which is heartbreaking. MODIFIED ARTS has been the only consistent diy show space in phoenix since 1998(ish).

it started as one of the only things of note in its area. it was the gentrifying forebearer, now surrounded by art galleries and various hip/cool things (some of which ARE really neat little spaces). the shit part is that it is one of the only venues doing the wide range of shows that it does there-and it is stopping to become a full-time gallery. because thats what the area needs, the 47th gallery that wont let you dance in downtown phoenix. sad.

A large portion of the current listening is due to exploring individual artists from Tacopunch's mixes (which of course lurk here: http://freakangels.com/whitechapel/comments.php?DiscussionID=1192); the upshot of which is that I'm loving Die!!Die!!Color!! from the scraps I can find on the web - they sound sort of like Atari Teenage Riot crossed with Bis with the guy from Refused singing (fragments here: http://rockasoo-thegoodmusic.blogspot.com/2007/01/die-die-color-beauty-shadow-tomato-star.html). I am very fond of 'x crossed with y' band descriptions, despite hating this kind of lazy bullshit with practically any other medium, so brace yourself.

These explorations also led me to this compilation: http://vgmdb.net/album/15345 (Speed King Vol.2)
From which I am enjoying Missile Chewbacca, and Leopaldon (who are named after Japanese Peter Parker's giant robot, naturally) - this sounds like a dance music that kept growing from the embryo of those guys who listened to Hawkwind, the Radiophonic Workshop and Bolt-Thrower while working on splash screen music for Atari ST pirate game compilations, rather than being hijacked by Southend seafront cruising scum and the Euro pop charts.

On a similar bent both DJ Sharpnel and M1dy have new albums out, bot of which I've only given a cursory listen.

Meanwhile, Dirty on Purpose sound like My Bloody Valentine or Band of Susans, Gotye (my wife says you say it 'Gaultier') a bit like how you thought that guy who did Frontier Psychiatrist would sound before the disappointment set in, and I think I like approximately half of every Genghis Tron song I hear, and have decided to like Lady GaGa since I find her pop-mongrel image so appealing even if her music inspires a lengthy meh.

I dig that, but I can see where one might be bored by it, especially if you're used to more frenetic stuff like grind/powerviolence. Their new album doesn't change that principle, so you might still find it dull. I really like the constant, driving feel of it, though. My gf says they're what it would sound like if Ministry was a sludge metal band.

They're great live, too. The interplay between the two of them is just right to make it sound huge.

 Warren:

Western musicians trying to play Eastern and African music, sounding like Western musicians trying to play Eastern and African music. Almost everything sounds too clean. Too user-friendly. Domesticated. The record sometimes moves into a vicious circle of academic self-wankery where nothing interesting happens for five to ten minutes and musical jizz drops on you from the ceiling like an impatient Facehugger.

After realizing what I dislike about ''Floodplain'', I can still listen to the album and enjoy parts of it. There are some standout tracks - I especially love the classical/idm clash that is ''Oh Mother, the Handsome Man Tortures Me'' and the energy of ''Nihavent Sirto'', even though it's a song that's about as close to being innovatory as Mark Millar is to being self-promotionally shy.

I have a feeling that the record might gradually show itself as a perfect demonstration of what globalization can be - academics playing wild people's music. Amusing, entertaining, occasionally very good? Yes. As lively as the music they gain inspiration from? Not at all.

Anyway, I recommend giving it a listen. I'm interested in what you'd have to say about it.
