Saw this on CNN this morning: Google Wave released for Beta testing.

Google’s new communication and collaboration tool, which they say is their attempt at “what email would look like if it were designed today,” integrates aspects of e-mail, social networking, instant messaging, and real-time editing.

I for one think this is both a logical conclusion of recent tech thought process and something I totally didn't see coming. It should be very cool if enough people adapt.

In short: E-mail isn't going away any time soon and while it might be useful for certain things, other existing tech (e-mail, FB, Twitter, even IRC) probably work better.

I just got my beta access to this, and have 5 invites I'm setting aside for Whitechapel members. Just for clarity-- According to the invite function in Google Wave, invitations will not be sent immediately, so I have no control over how long it takes.

@Warren - If you don't already have it, you'll be getting an invite to it via your Gmail dump address whenever they send it out, should you be interested.

@D- - Interesting. Upon opening my account, I had 20 invites, sitting in an invite message. Then again, as it hasn't told me who sent me it, maybe I actually got picked due to actually applying for the beta itself. If that's the case, then I suppose it's possible that direct invites from the beta test application process come with a bundle in hand? Who knows, I don't work for Google, I'm just happy to have it, and to be able to share... LOL.

@gzapata -- It's hard to know what to think right now. It's nifty because it facilitates collaborative work when collaboration is unlikely to happen face-to-face. The problem is that I haven't had a chance to really see how this works. Sure, I've messaged a few people (and can see them typing away) but I'd really love to use it for a panel I'm currently working on. The problem is that I cannot invite my fellow panelists to get on Wave and work on the main proposal with me. For now, it's just functioning like a fancy chat room...! I'm still exploring, though. :)

Before you fill out the form, I'd have a look at some of the Wave previews on Youtube so you can fine tune your pitch. Although, to be honest, I suspect businesses have the best chance of getting invites through the direct request form. For those of you currently without invites (and alas, I have none to send right now), you aren't missing much of anything if you don't have a specific need for what it does.

I didn't actually install any. I only saw like six of them, and none of them really appealed to me. Sorry. Probably should have kept my mouth shut... I'm not being terribly helpful right now. I'm with you on the "what do I do with this?" frame of mind, though. So far it seems like a glorified chat room. And I rarely have situations where that would be useful.

Then again, I'm not really Google's target demographic, either. (Though I'm not really sure what their target demo is to begin with...)

I think Google's target demographic is "everyone."

Problem with Wave right now is that it's collaboration software w/o any collaborators. Not enough people have it and that people that have it don't use it, or treat it as a curiosity. If you have to email someone to tell them to check their Wave account, that pretty much undermines its usefulness--at least for now.

Problem with Wave right now is that it's collaboration software w/o any collaborators.

The collaboration angle seems like marketing BS to me. It’s really just a system for hosting private forums that behave like email, or from the other point of view, email that behaves like forums. That’s actually a pretty cool thing—it’s taken way too long for someone to streamline listservs and forums. And maybe at some point some killer extension will come along that takes it to the next level. But if Google wants businesses to give up exchange it still has to do with those day-long Gmail outages before anybody will want to rely on Wave.

I have not received a Google Wave invite. I'm not sure what happened. I didn't mistype my email address. I did recently email a member of the National Security Council and called him a pussy, and he did write me back about my perceived lack of testicles, so maybe that has something to do with it. After I told him I'd forward our correspondence to a particular journalist (Again, in said correspondence, he made references to my testicles), he told me that I couldn't legally forward our correspondence without suffering some implied legal consequences. If this douche has anything to do with my Google Wave invitation, I want to know about it.

Said douche happens to be a very ugly motherfucker, in case anyone cared. When he writes anything worth repeating, he passes along a decades old profile image as an avatar. Recent pictures of him are actually shocking. I am not lying when I say that I gagged when I first saw his recent photograph. He looks like his stomach has long ago enveloped his torso and recently defeated his neck. Before long, his stomach body will envelop his head, and then the only way you can speak with him will be talking into his huge belly button. Like some freakish political tortoise cartoon.

@Zombi (and whoever else this comment may apply to that I've missed) - At the moment, D- and I have gone through our invites. When I get more, I'll see who else here needs them (as I suspect D- may as well). In the meantime, hopefully those who I've entered into the invite system will get their accounts shortly, and potentially get invites to pass along/pay forward here before our next round of them.

@KPeff- As stated elsewhere in the thread (in a couple places, I believe), as well as in the Google Wave invite function, the invitations do not immediately send on entry. My understanding is that it's at least a good 2-3 day wait in some cases (again, stated elsewhere in the thread). However, if said ugly motherfucker NSC douche is tampering with with your invite, I would encourage you to tamper with his tacos. Enough said.

Maybe. But that's how they're positioning it, and Google Wave is hard to describe. "Collaboration software" is an easier term to digest than "private forums that behave like email."

Yeah, this is still a big problem for them isn't it? I know they have some enterprise customers, but not many. They are going after the consumer markets first, then it seems that they will try to make headway with smaller enterprises that don't have copious IT resources.

They might just wait for providers of enterprise communications to come to them. Google has an Enterprise Professional Program (they've had it for a while) and it seems like major UC vendors such as Avaya are already looking to partner.

I figure this way it allows those who may not know any others with Wave to still dig in and test it out with the group. I think it is generational. My friend, who invited me, was invited by a friend. I think maybe people who request get them, the next generation gets fewer, and then the third generation gets none. However, this is completely based on conjecture and heresay.

@Fauxhammer, Anthony Reed, rickiep00h, taphead - From what I've gathered, 1st gen invites (those directly from Google) come immediately pre-packed with 20 invites. Those invites, when the intended recipients are allocated, can take anywhere from 2-4 days at the moment, and not necessarily handed out in the order that they were entered. 2nd gen invites (those from other people, or at least the one that Google invited directly) don't come with invites immediately, but they appear to be given invites to hand out after an as-yet-to-be-determined period of time (looks like under a few weeks). All invites submissions are being manually processed, ergo the turnaround time on who gets them. That being said, there also appears to possibly be a random invite factor on Google's part, where they may be inviting people based on mutual contact connections to others who have accepted Wave invites. While I've seen at least one situation directly that points toward this, I've seen no actual verification.

We've got a pretty big Sharepoint site at work, but for the most part it remains pretty much just a place to stick documents. I understand some companies have managed to make heavy use of social networking and collaborative technology for *general* application, but we haven't been one of them. I don't see a new platform really changing this very much.

I mean for telecommuting there's Skype for teleconferencing, and remote desktop for sharing whatever document you're discussing, but hitherto it's not easy for multiple participants to simultaneously control/edit the document in question.

More generally, in any kind of meeting it might make an interesting difference (for the better) for people to see the meeting's minutes being written in real-time.

And it's common to edit a document and send the edits for review, whereas it would change the dynamic for people to see the document being edited live ... without even needing to leave their desks and go to a meeting room.

I was like "Wow" when I saw the video. I wonder how much (if it all) and how people have been using it within Google.

That, sir, is still an open question. :) And the answer is much the same as with Lotus Notes, Sharepoint, Groove, wikis...you need to have a purpose to collaborate on. Think of it best as a cross between an email list, a BBS and a Tumblr, with fairly primitive privacy and access control tools, so don't put up a bunch of pr0n you suddenly wouldn't want all your contacts discovering until you've had a chance to figure out the sharing. Which is pretty much all or nothing currently - there's no moderation, anyone can edit anything, and it's all peer to peer.

One use I could think of would be to enhance and expand threads created on WC, for instance. Take one of the 'Movies to watch out for' threads, let's say. One could set up a Wave much easier than putting up a website, watch clips and comment on them in realtime or asynchronously, make lists of future movies to watch, add essays and commentary, etc etc.

Or more likely - let's suppose somebody put out a call for a short-term art project. WC with its centralization and linear form as a BBS makes a great place to put out the call, post samples and status updates -but the actual collaboration and work files need to go somewhere else. A Wave would be an ideal use there. You put out the call on WC, line up contributors, post the Wave address and folks then drop into the Wave, put up their work files, make comments and potentially edit and generate the project together in real-time.

@MaC - No problem. The turnaround can vary-- my most recent batch all sent within a day, but the initial batch took 2-4 days on average, and in at least one case an invite took 2 weeks.

Otherwise you have the short story thing, where someone starts doing a paragraph, then others follows. The advantage here is that one can see as you type, so people won't work on the same paragraph. Here it could also be cool if people could reserve paragraphs for later, for instance, you write the first paragraph, Phill reserves the second, I write the third, then Phill can come back later and tie the two paragraphs together. It'll be just like it always is with these things, only more interactive

I wonder how viable a one-shot comic or illustrated fiction piece would be... expanding on the short story idea, with different artists illustrating different segments (or perhaps collaborating between pencils/inks/colors/finishes where applicable). Then again, it might be a good way to pair artists and writers up if they work well together, pushing the "Get Excited And Make Things"/"Do Anything" side of things. Hmmm...

@Zombi - It's a bit clunky, which I'm sure isn't helped by the lethargy of being in a larger Wave. Messed with everything but what I'm guessing is a potential layer option (the one that looks like a pad of paper). Very basic, easy to intuit. Then again, given that Wave itself is in Preview right now, I don't think it would be fair to expect anything past something rudimentary in the art gadget arena.

This could just be simple notes, to get some sort of structure and initiative to it, without narrowing in the plot too much. Secondly, different people could try to write the script, maybe like it is done in the beginning of Freakangels:

Finally, we can get to the drawing process, where people can grab different frames or pages (depending on project size) and illustrate as they feel. Here there could also be room for uploading concept art (so we get some similarity to the settings and characters) and improvement. Remember, you are able to move files through Wave, so it is possible to upload the *.psd file for others to improve upon as well.

@Zombi - I would suggest that we create a separate wave for that, link it in the primary Whitechapel wave, and allow people to opt-in if they're interested. Just remember, none of the actual writing/ideation process can go here, as we don't do that here (it would violate The Rules).

Guide to getting on the Whitechapel Wave Group

Alright, I'm going to assume you have already joined the Whitechapel Google Group (wchapel@googlegroups.com)

So the first thing you want to do is add wchapel@googlegroups.com to your contacts. The submit button will be greyed out, but just hit enter and everything will be fine.

Next up you want to set up a search. Click the plus sign by searches and add "group:wchapel@googlegroups.com" in the query field and save it as whatever you want.

Using this search will show any waves that have had the wchapel@googlegroups.com user added to it. Obviously if you want all of us to see your wave, add the wchapel user to it.

Primary WC wave appears to be broken for now for a number (all?) of us, due to the gadget issue. You can still read it, but if you try to reply/edit/etc. it has a tendency to give you an error and not process the changes attempted. Such is often the nature of Preview bugs. So, I'm in the process setting up v1.1 with expanded guidelines to help it both run smoother and more productively for those using it. Once I've got the primary blip in place, I'll start adding people over, as well as integrating the Google Group that Jonny has listed above.

It was the WhiteChapel wave that was foobar so I started another wave concerning the Introduction to Algorithms MIT lectures which I'm using to take notes whilst working.

Okay. New Whitechapel Community primary wave is up. We (Jonny and I) think it should be registering as public now. This means anyone with Wave should be able to access it-- here's the link if anyone wants to test it to see. Spent the last few hours just mapping out the primary wave, the initial sub-wavelets (read: threads), and general starter guidelines to have a backbone in place for you guys to work on. Oh, and adding people to the wave.

@Internaut - You have been officially tossed. This does not mean that we're an "item".

@sgrsickness, meaninglessnoise, and karegon - I don't have any new invites yet, perhaps someone else here can hook you up. Otherwise, I'll come back and check when I get my next batch.

Having let this take a bit more time than I intended, I need to focus on getting some concept art out of the way and sent off today. So I'll probably only be passively active (at best) on Wave for the next several hours.

Not sure if anyone had posted this or not, but I was curious, and it seems that wave is optimized for the iPhone. It'll give you a warning that "the browser is not supported" but includes a "continue at your own peril" link. it's kind of slow and you need to refresh to see new posts, but at least it's there.

Now, if that doesn't bring it up in full for some of you (which can happen in some instances when you're already running Wave in another window/tab), there's a trick.

Everything behind that percent symbol (which I've placed in bold for you), is the identifier for the wave. Copy that, and replace everything behind the percent symbol in your functional Wave window, hitting return when you're done. That should load you directly into the wave you're trying to reach within the core window, if you're having link issues.

From that point, you'll still have to follow the wave for it to show up in your inbox.

The RP wave has begun! officially and stuff. rusty and i have both posted, just hoping i can keep up, my internet/computer time is pretty limited due to my ridic work schedule and the fact that the gigantic multinational corporation that i work for refuses to have any browser other than IE6 installed on the work comps, for fuck's sake, it's nearly 2010.

@Ysaka - That was actually very useful. Most explanations I've read are enormous, and the demo video was pretty long too, from memory. Concise but still covers a lot.
I was using Wave the other day under the pretense of work, but it ended up being like an IM chat about bizarre Japanese movies. I'm looking forward to testing out some of it's more interesting possibilities.

I have just used wave to coordinate SDCC hotel booking with a couple friends. It is the worst program, and whoever loves it should be sucker punched in the throat. I hate it on such a base level, if it had children, I would be cruel to them.

I know it's just a stupid app no one uses; I should just shrug and move on. But my hate for it is far richer and poisonous than merely regarding an app that doesn't work. It's just...imagine if the entire world thought Paris Hilton was some polyglot to be celebrated from sea to shining sea, and you were the only one who could see her for what she truly is. That's how Google Wave makes me feel. It has the functionality of a three-legged rabbit.

Want to insert a link? No, don't bother hitting CTRL + V, go up to the top, click the Link button, and then you're allowed to paste the URL. You know who let me paste directly while incorporating nearly all of Google Wave's features? AOL 3.0 chat rooms and there's a reason I stopped using those.
