I'm hoping you guys can help. I am after a new mp3/4 player and and having a hard time deciding between Apple, Sony or Creative players (owned machines by the sony and creative but never had an ipod).

I'm after either 16 or 32 gb with good battery life and navigation (will fill 16gb with ease).

So far looking at the new ipod touch or nano, Sony s-series or Creative X-Fi. Spec wise there doesn't seem to be much between them.

Any advice?

if you want a multi-use player, the ipod touch allows you to easily go online via a wi-fi connection & uses the same apps as the iPhone. it's basically almost an iPhone without the phone & monthly charges.
the iRiver players are really good also, once owned a cd/mp3 combo player that i really liked.

Do you like apps? Convenience? Not bothered about the quality of music playback? Get an iPod.

If you like music, get the Sony Walkman NWZ-X1061.

I have actually compared the same pieces of music on an iPod and on the Sony.

If you like music, you want the Sony.

@warren - Its more a music thing for me.

I did look at the X-series walkman but the 32gb seemed expensive for what it is (plus reports of useless wi-fi connection). The s-series looks interesting but only go up to 16gb.

The few times I've used the wifi connection, it's been fine. But I wanted a top-end mp3 player that can also play mp4 video and wasn't a nightmare to organise and sync. If you're buying an mp3 player for its wifi abilities, then, I dunno, maybe you need to look elsewhere...

I realise this has been dead in the water for a while, but in case anyone is currently seeking out MP3 players (like myself), I thought I'd pass along my recent finds.

After looking on multiple review sites, and through the comments on Amazon, newegg, pcworld, etc... I've come across this site: anythingbutipod.com, and it's list of the top 5 players of 2009. I want something that plays music, and does so for an extended period of time, therefore I am likely going with the SanDisk Sansa Clip + which plays MP3, WMA, DRM WMA, Audible, Ogg Vorbis, and FLAC. (Sony doesn't play FLAC or OGG? How odd)

Cowon products are terribly tempting as well, but the bang to buck ratio of the "Clip plus" seems unbeatable.

EDITED TO ADD: I do wish the battery life of the Clip plus was more impressive, however.
