My digital comic SOLDIERS launched yesterday.

It was written by me (naval officer, Iraq veteran), with art my Martin Montiel (The Darkness, Legendary), Chris Summers (G.I. Joe, Nightwing), and Charles Pritchett (Noble Causes). It is pure COMIC GOODNESS!

Come to the SOLDIERS website (www.soldiersthecomic.com) and check it out.

I really like what you’ve done with the conversations running across a single panel. It’s especially effective when the action builds by creating density with word balloons over a series of panels, or in the panel where seventeen balloons pop up. I’ll be looking forward to updates.

I enjoyed the first part, thank you for sharing. The overlays were an interesting device though a bit over done. Is page/panel 20 out of sequence? I'll be adding Soldiers tuesdays to Freakangels Fridays.

Only the first 8 pages loaded for me, but the art is swell.

Owen and James -- Thanks! The lettering overlays was both a nice effect and a necessity. We made SOLDIERS for mobile devices, and so to remain legible on the smaller screen and the have enough meat to create a real conversation, we had to think outside of the box. I think it came out pretty good, but it can still be perfected. Charles (our letterer) and I will be refining this effect for future issues.

Owen -- that as a great compliment ranking us with Freakangel Fridays. Can I quote you on that? Also, page 20 is not out of sequence.

Brendan -- only 8 pages? The update is 22 screens, though as noted they are not all different images. What browser are you using? What OS?

@ Brendan -- Great to hear. Hey, you've been doing a lot of comics lately -- most out of your own pocket. Ever thought of switching formats and focusing on digital distribution? How are you monetizing the comics you've got so far?

Now that my website's righted, that's what I've been doing this week: prepping stuff for mobile.

I'm also trying to find a Wordpress plugin or some smart code that will let me put a friendly gate on the site's collected issues. So, you read issue #1 no-strings, then can read issue #2 for free if you email a friend the link to issue #1, or watch a short ad, something like that. I think it'll be a breakthrough because weekly or even daily updates are not the way to build a sense of scene.

Brendan, there are several plug-ins that would work for you. We are using Wishlist on SOLDIERS and when we have enough issues prepped we'll start using it. It has several levels of membership -- might want to check it out.

I'm going to give this a try first.
