I think I might as well just limit all my comments on Freakangels to a noise of joy mixed with frustration. Sort of a hrrrnnngghh! kind of a noise. Another blinding episode. Another fucking horrible wonderful cliffhanger. The look on Kait's face on that last panel crams so much expression in.

Anyway, it is indeed starting to freeze over here. Well, get mildly chilly enough for me to break out the big swishy winter coat of doom, at any rate. And Hallowe'en is coming up. And I am going to make the king of all sausage casseroles this weekend. These are all Good Things. Did I mention how much I love autumn?

Yeah, I knew this would land Jack in the hot water. Sirrka's just got her splash of cold water to the face for the day.

Alice also continues to put a smile on my face, even if she is foolhardy and stubborn to the point of stupid. At least she doesn't piss around forever making up her mind about stuff.

I'm not committing to whether that's Mark with Kait or not. Which is to say, I think it IS Mark, but only 'in spirit', as it were. He does specialize in that, after all. She absolutely seemed to recognize whoever it is, though whether that's by a distinct voice, some sort of psychic impression, or even just recalling a certain mannerism? That remains to be seen.
( Then again, maybe she can see them better than us, reflected in that sword. )

Volume Four is going to be just huge. Can't wait.

Hi everyone... officially first post in here, been the shittiest week in my life as I had to confront a really painful situation last saturday which made realize that sometimes when you screw big time there's nothing left but to begin a new life.

Oh man... that doesn't bode well for the one who's my favourite character on the comic =/. Maybe Kait can sort of... parry? that sword attack with the short one she's holding right now?

Also, me thinks the samurai wannabe is Mark as well.

I can't believe volume three is already over, but this series keeps getting better and better, congrats Warren, Paul and the whole FA crew!. You do an amazing job!.

Okay. Now, I'm a little disappointed in this being the end of book 3. With Fell, Warren set out to do one-issue stories, basically taking a stand against comics that resolve nothing at the end. And this doesn't resolve anything. It's not even a splash page with the bad Freakangel Mark. Everything is left hanging, including KK. I think this comic's good enough by far to not need such a cheap cliffhanger trick: "You interested in even one thing in this story? Well, you gotta come back."

Great episode again but end of a volume? As an online reader, I don't suppose it matters, but I'd be pissed if I'd bought a collected version. And surely, this is only an "end of volume" by virtue of getting to ep72 since there isn't any real conclusion to any thread; or is that all that "end of volume" signifies anyway?

Still, great stuff, as I said. And congrats on the Gravel stuff, Mr. Ellis - be interesting to see how much of that needs to be changed fo film.

Has anyone had any troubles viewing the comic? At home, on both FIrefox and IE, randomly half ofpages won't load and, depending on the browser, different pages have problems. For instance, the bottom half of page two was just a block of gray on FF and the bottom half of page five was gray on IE.

I agree with the mob - it's Mark. That explains why Kait was blocked from the mass call. It's not Luke blocking her. It's Mark, following her around. I like it.

The one aspect of this I didn't like was Alice heading out with the shotgun. Either (a) she's leaving the lookout unmanned, or (b) she's going to try to get a shot off from the steeple, which isn't likely to do much good with a shotgun. And the good thing about Alice is that normally she's very practical.

Warren because he has enlightened our last weeks with this fantastic volume three, plus a magnificent cliffhanger. I am so glad none of us has expected such an end of a volume!
Paul too, deserves a skip month, because his art keeps getting great and fine and stunning with velocity. He deserves a little rest, or a time to watch after the ones he loves and do something a bit different, breathe.
Ariana and the others because of all this good work and the constant attention given to us whitechapelers, and the tact and the caring et al.
And us because this has been so good, so good, we need to get back to volume one and enjoy each and every panel up to this incredible rollecoaster.

I'm slowly going back over the archives. So far as I can tell, it would be the most extreme case of "It's always the one you least suspect" if it's Conner. He's been nothing but helpful and kind. But noticeably absent in Vol. 3. So I don't know what to think.

ETA: I decided to go back and check who calls Kait "Kaitlyn," just in case. Unfortunately, it's Arkady, KK, Miki, (who are all accounted for) and Connor (who currently is not). But Kait also introduced herself as "Kaitlyn" to the refugees, so double-goddammit.

On the plus side, the hair does indeed appear not be Connor's. Connor's seems to be cut to a fairly uniform length, whereas Killer's seems a bit more straggled. But this might be pedantry. Triple-goddammit.

EEEeyyyayy!! I actually screamed just a tiny little bit on page 5 in my darkened, hushed house. So far I don't think I've roused anyone. So worried for...well, everyone! Eek! I think Alice is acting stupidly. How does making a decision in the blink of an eye stand in for intelligence? Surely she's aware that she's outclassed by a Freakangel and that Luke in particular *really* dislikes her. I hope she doesn't leave her high ground. Not surprised Jack has more than one gun. Pistols in the UK may be rare for the regular Englishman but police/military have caches of them. Any such that were raided would be empty and those that weren't would be...a trove. So, so scared for Kait. No matter who it is she would have to have ice water for blood to be ready for an attack. Maybe she does - she's been perfectly composed before - but this situation sounds like it's totally different as she's confronted by someone she wasn't necessarily expecting to see. That can be unbalancing.

It's been a split week. Good times with the family - my MB is here!!! he goes back to Afghanistan in two days - but bad for myself. Yet another job that should have been MINE (if I can be a titch dramatic - yet accurate) slipped away. I don't know how the fuck to live my life, but it's rolling by anyhow and some parts aren't made wholly of suck. I don't quite know how to reconcile it all and pinning my hopes on a job keeps being a waste of time. Feh.

Just as I was getting off my Freakangel kick for the week (to the degree that I'm not drooling like a maddog by Friday morning) y'all drops this into my Friday mix getting me high and addicted all over again.

This week's episode was orgasmic.

I think it's Mark and I'm surprised because it seemed every shadow someone expected Mark was there and I was thinking wherever he was it likely was elsewhere plotting. But that shadow was telling..I looked closer at the shadow, as if it was a photo only to be reminded that it's not reality therefor not a photo.

I hope my lovely Kait can fight in a tight spot. If she lives to see the day, her pride might be fatally wounded by the fact someone got close enough to chop her head clear off.

I'm sure KK will live, though she ought to step up and realize if Arkady can hop in and out of places she can get herself to safely land without breaking any bones.

Alice needs to rethinking trying to shoot Luke...he's a pisser, but a smarter more powerful than she is.

Jack might get flack for it later but having guns in such a time is necessary.

Looks like vol 4 will be opening us up to a whole new world of Whoa.

I will look forward to meeting Mark (who likely I will like anyway because evil is so delicious) He might knock Connor off as my favorite.

Yea Alice, great impulse, but don't die, you retard, remember the last time you came up against a Freak Angel with murder in mind!!! Why does Freak Angels bring out multiple exclamation point disorder? Thanks for mentioning the image in the sword, I was looking at it as dried blood/rust/dirt, after Kait said, "Hmm, someone's at least tried to clean it", and just thought, well they didn't do a very good job! That's the cool thing about community, it's not the first time Whitechaplains have noticed things for me! At the beginning of the series KK was my favorite, (remember her going across the river for a shank?) She was cool and all steampunk, but she just hasn't had any character development in a long time, and now my favorite is Alice. I guess it's the risk of having so little opportunity for exposition per episode, and so many characters--some, like Conner, just go away for awhile, and some never will get the same character development as others. Anyone want to guess which are Warren's faves?

anobii already lists volume 3 with a cover shot and an isbn. Clicking on buy now doesn't lead to any sellers yet.

And amazon US and amazon Canada at least offer it for presale. The only thing that keeps me from ordering it right now is that it say limited edition hardback, but doesn't say if it's the signed edition. I hope this time that there's three or maybe four signatures, but the announcement on freakangels.com doesn't look like it, it just says dual signed limited to 1000, but hey, the flatting and coloring is amazing too! What about Alana and Kate Brown?

I did exactly the same thing. I even caught myself thinking "If I pull that into photoshop I can mess with the levels to pull out more detail..." :)

@Purple Wyrm...that's the exact same idea I was cooking up. I lifted my netbook up close to my face and twisted it in my hand and thought about pulling it up on Photoshop (cause I do it like second nature now). I stopped myself after a moment and felt foolish for forgetting that it's not a photo at all. I have a habit of reading and seeing everything in my head and slipping out of reality, but that's the first time something fictional kind of slipped into my reality and I had to remind myself that it wasn't actual.

Half of the enjoyment of waiting for Friday is seeing the breathtaking artwork.
I kinda hope Mark looks hot, I know I ought to be concerned if he's really behind Kait and really about to do something really horrible to her, but when Alice said he looked like Connor, I wonder if he actually looks like Connor.

Fuck! this strip both amazes and aggravates me to no end. There is nothing like this anywhere right now, not on the web or in the comic stores. The level of drama and intimacy packed into these few short pages a week is remarkable, and the sense of dread and despair in the cliffhangers really works to keep the reader an active participant in this great experiment. So now I guess I'll look next weekend and see an interlude week just to ratchet up the frustration a tad. Just brilliant work guys.

heh...think Kait's gonna die? I said from the beginning that I wanted to see her go out...not because I don't like her, but because something about her personality demands it....

wow, what a week. so much family drama....my husband's ex, the mother of my step daughters, is moving off to the other side of the country again because her current living conditions are kinda insane....so she broke up with her boyfriend, and high tailed it to our house until next tuesday when her plane is scheduled. The kids are estatic, and to tell the truth, it's a hell of alot more relaxing having her here than my father (who frequently crazily, old manedly, crashes with me on occasion)...what's awesome about all this is, my step kid's mom, needs quick cash, so she's selling us her big screen tv and ps3 for two hundred bucks now, and four hundred in jan (in return for letting her stay here for the week). awesome.
Oh, and I'm MY GOD-ing about the new microsoft Natal project. Have you people seen this shit? virtual reality is here....all we need are the goggles.

The shotgun is Alice's, and apparently that's where she keeps it now.

She brought it up the tower with her soon after http://www.freakangels.com/?p=67 ... she spends a lot of her time up there in the watchtower (it's her job to be up there) and I suppose she doesn't want to be entirely unarmed ... the FAs have their powers for self-defense, but she doesn't .. it makes more sense for her to have it with her there than for her to leave it at home, I guess.

Although several people have had handguns, and even a military-surplus mortar once, not to mention the stream-driven home-made Gatling flechette gun (which is the "big gun" she referred to over the radio this episode), no-one has ever mentioned there being a rifle.

One, I wouldn't call it a choice. It's not a Hollywood movie. It's England, which doesn't allow guns. They don't even allow combat knives. Are you familiar with the phrase "beggars can't be choosers"? That. Hell, I don't think anyone would want a two-shot farmer's shotgun if they could choose from an arsenal. Things being as they are, though, keeping location (and the end of the fucking world) in mind, it makes sense that guns are in a limited supply.

Two, only an idiot would try using the shotgun over a long range to take people down from afar. Even if it's loaded up with slugs, it's still not a weapon designed for that purpose. However, slugs or buckshot, it'd be a great self-defense weapon should someone unfriendly try and climb up the ladder. It shouldn't take more than one shell to take someone down when they're that close up. Any smart person would prefer a sniper or automatic rifle, but the "beggars" phrase applies here, too.

Three, there actually was a rifle in some nice artwork depicting Kaitlyn in front of her arsenal. It was a Dragunov SVD slung across her back, if I'm not mistaken. Now THAT would be an excellent choice for a weapon on the tower.

One thing I love about this series, with it being a part of my trade and an area of interest, is the attention to detail when it comes to the firearms. I had little difficulty naming most of them on sight. Excellent job on all of them so far.

The same applies to ammunition which - as Jack comments in Book Two - they don't make any more. You may have the best rifle in the world but without bullets of the right calibre it's nothing but a fairly unwieldy club.

I'm going with the idea that the reflection in the sword was seen by Kait before the greeting from behind, so she's not as surprised as you might think. Page six, first frame she's pulling and looking at the sword, second frame she's exposed the blade and is looking at the reflection, third frame, we see by her angle of vision that she's watching/reacting to the reflection already before the greeting (wouldn't it have been cool to have seen a distorted reflection of the view in the sword on her eyeball in that frame!!? I looked for it. Nothing would surprise me in that great artwork). I believe that, given equal skills and armament (skills we don't know, swords I don't know, the one she has looks shorter/heavier, they have the reach, she can beat it aside easier, but what do I know about sword fighting), she would have the advantage, because the person behind her (note I said person--everyone assumes a guy here on the list, but you can't tell from the reflection, although Kait could, and she heard the voice) will be assuming surprise, but Kait saw them already in the reflection, so the surprise is lost--Kait's speed of reaction then will give her the surprise advantage. When I first saw the third frame I read it as surprise, but it didn't read quite right. I don't think it's surprise, I think it's fight or flight driven single mindedness. She's already in the zone, while the assailant is caught up in their pleasure at surprising/freaking her out. I think that they're in trouble now, because Kait's has already popped the top on a can of whup-ass! Also on the theme of WHO THE F**K IS IT!!!! I believe it's a guy and someone known to her and a Freakangel. Of the Freakangel's it's most likely Mark. BUT!!! She's prominent. Any stalker could have know her name. (Although granted, unlikely a non-freakangel could have gotten sneaky enough to get that close before she knew). We don't know if the Freakangels know that they are all the Freakangels. We don't know what caused them. We don't know what they caused/are so guilty over other than some apocalyptic ending--but how? Warren's got a lot of directions he could go from here. He's barely touch the surface of the dew on the surface of the possibilities--his finger's aren't even damp yet. He's talked about being inspired by the Midwich Cuckoos although we don't know if Freakangels are actually children of aliens. In that story there were multiple groups of children, but all groups had died/been killed early except one. What if there's one or more whole groups, or survivors from other groups? What if they're pissed off at the Freakangels? I wish I knew if he has it all plotted out to the end. I've looked on the web and there's not a lot about his process, but a lot about his motivation for various pieces.

If anyone's in San Francisco this Saturday it's Litquake right now and the famous pub crawl is on Saturday. I'm volunteering and will be in Clarion Alley doing crowd control. Come by and say hi. Look for the 6' guy with the Patrick namebadge--sign up for the open mike (theme is Dirty in the Alley and sign up is between 6 and 7). Also, it's a pub crawl+readings from great writers and others. I don't have to explain the concept to people from England, but people in America sometimes confuse pub-crawl with bar-hop. Not the same. Better/less desperate/more friendly people at a pub crawl.

Not all that wise, but Alice has always been pretty independent. That said, she's not taking out after Mark, she's going after Luke.

She also saw the wreck of KK's bike-o-copter - she might be going to see if she can help her, and taking the shotgun with because after the apocalypse it's sort of stupid to be a fair young lady out and about and alone without one.

I can't believe so many people think that Alice is getting in over her head here. My view of Alice has always been that of a very capable person. Let's not forget that she ran with gun runners before coming to white chapel, and the only reason she got herself in trouble in the beginning is that she wanted to be noticed. We've also seen the Freak Angels be caught off guard enough times to know that they aren't omniscient with the possible exception being Arkady. I for one think that she ends Luke and that causes a rift in the Freak Angels because they've always been the ones to take care of their own, and Alice killing Luke might be a violation of their rules.

I just know that alice is the last person I'd want stalking me through back alleys with a shotgun.

Awesome episode. I literally saying "Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck" to myself all day when I first read it.

The more I think about it, the more I convince myself that Connor is the killer. The shadow does look somewhat like him. I mean, we haven't seen the guy in quite some time, the other Angels pretty much ignore him because he doesn't do much as far as they are concerned.

For all we know, he's been practicing with his powers as much as Arkady has. He could be really dangerous.

@fmhswrestler08 Alice may be tough in a drowned world that can barely recognize civilization, but the first time she went up against a FreakAngel she got a can of gasoline dropped on her head, and that proved to be one of the gentler attacks the FreakAngels employ. the second time she tried something her mind was more directly attacked. Any 'Angel outclasses any tough chick with a shotgun, even Alice.

Plus if she is leaving the tower, and it looks like she is, she's abandoning her post & accepted obligations.

Just wanted to pop in and say how much fun I had.

I'm also wondering if people have any suggestions for the best way to view it (and comics in general?) online. I struggle with the way it lays out on my laptop - I end up doing a lot of scrolling.

Most modern browsers will allow you to scale any page using either Ctrl- and Ctrl+ (on Mac Apple-/Apple+). That should allow you to view the full page of art on the screen at once--whether the text will still be readable at that point is dependent on your screen resolution.
