I feel kind of lame making a post for this, but if anyone can give me some feedback, it's you fine folks. My friends are having me "dj" their wedding reception. By "dj", I mean come up w/ music to put in a playlist and hit play on an iPod hooked up to a stereo system. Their plan is to have everyone in the bridal party pick one song, and I can go crazy w/ the rest. Problem is, I'm having trouble coming up w/ suitable music. My only restriction is to keep it family-friendly, as there will be kids about. So far, I have "Dance Commander" by Electric Six and (maybe) either "Diamonds and Gold" or "Hang Down Your Head" by Tom Waits. I'm really wanting to avoid the cliche stuff. Anyone have suggestions?
How about MY wedding playlist, that went over very well at my wedding?
Birdhouse in Your Soul / They Might Be Giants Deadbeat Club / B-52's Superstition / Stevie Wonder Are You Ready For Love / Elton John Tennessee / Arrested Development Cars / Gary Numan Kung Fu Fighting / Carl Douglas Avalon / Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music First Time Ever I Saw Your Face / Johnny Cash Istanbul (Not Constantinople) / They Might Be Giants All Things (Just Keep Getting Better) Wideboys Poison Arrow (Single Version) / ABC Back To Life (How Ever Do You Want Me)/Soul II Soul Word Up (7" Vocal Version) / Cameo Groove Is In The Heart / Deee-Lite Xanadu / Olivia Newton-John & Electric Light Orchestra The Downtown Lights / The Blue Nile Deee-Lite Theme/ Deee-Lite You Are the Sunshine of My Life/ Stevie Wonder AsK DNA /Yoko Kanno Do You Realize? /The Flaming Lips Kiss /Prince West End Girls/Pet Shop Boys In My Heart 4:37 18 Moby 19-2000/Gorillaz Ribbon in the Sky/Stevie Wonder Missing/Everything But The Girl I Love You/Yello Private Idaho/B-52's Space Age Love Song/A Flock of Seagulls Rock Lobster/ B-52's Sir Duke/Stevie Wonder
I had all of Jane's "Oh, I don't dance at weddings" friends rocking all night long!
Sexy Boy - Air Come to Me - Bjork You're My Thrill - Billie Holiday Femme Fatale - Velvet Underground Let's Stay Together - Al Green As - Stevie Wonder God Only Knows - Beach Boys Creatures of Love - Talking Heads Pomps and Pride - Toots and the Maytals Could It Be Magic - Donna Summer Let's Stick Together - Bryan Ferry Feels Like I'm In Love - Kelly Marie Hey Ya - Outcast Gimme Gimme Gimme (A man after midnight) - ABBA Get It On - T Rex I Don't Feel Like Dancing - Scissor Sisters I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys Strict Machine - Goldfrapp No Tomorrow - Orson Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand
Jane and I actually had fun including good songs that were kind of anti-wedding songs (Tainted Love, Poison Arrow, etc) but in the end, good music, and a mix of fast and slow gives everyone something to enjoy.
And if you haven't seen these, here's my Wedding DJ Bingo cards that I made for my B.P.M. graphic novel, which are a fun game to play when you're at a wedding with a crappy DJ and you have drinks! Sounds like you're well on your way to being the good kind of wedding music person!
@Mathias Agreed, I've already picked out Love and Happiness, and I'm hoping it doesn't get nixed by the bride or groom. There'll be fights. They already shot down bride's sister's choice of Thriller, which I wasn't planning on picking anyway, but...
that is some playlist! We had a good DJ (My best mans brother) at our wedding so we didn“t provide a playlist, but we did have the following requests....
Daft Punk is playing at my house - LCD Soundsystem Stand and Deliver - Adam and the Ants (?) Hit - the Sugarcubes Roses - Outkast Get off of my cloud - The rolling stones
and Sun O)). Nah only joking...
And we danced to "For once in my Life" by Stevie Wonder
The vast majority of my friends are swing dancers, but at their weddings, as not everyone who will be there swing dances, they mainly play a lot of soul and Motown. I have yet to see it *not* be a hit. But really, can anyone resist a bit of Smokey Robinson or The Temptations?
Marvin Gaye always works. Let's Get It On being my usual last song of the evening.
The Meters - Just Kissed My Baby Neil Young - Harvest Moon Leonard Cohen - Take This Waltz Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up Donna Summer - I Feel Love (the longer the better)
ETA: Even though Let's Get It On earns points on the bingo cards. Oh well, drinks are nice, yes?
@Taphead: As stated, there ARE no bad songs, just bad uses of songs. I love "Let's Get It On" in the right moment, just not as a cue for drunk assholes to start grabbing asses in a slow dance. My pick for Marvin Gaye: Got To Give it Up (12" version). Cheers!
I have been told Tom Waits is completely out of the question, per bride's request. And groom was totally wanting to use Hold On, from Mule Variations. If I can collect the songs I have on my list (and get the song picks from the rest of the wedding party) and get them all in order, I think I'll have a pretty sizable playlist ready to go. I'll post it when I have it somewhere near complete.
Okay, I'll put up a few because they're ones that people don't tend to think of/hadn't heard of before.
I'm going to try to remember some songs from my wedding... and some commentary
"Your Party" by Ween (Near the end of the night) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0ISF95axZQ "Soon Love Soon" by Vienna Teng (first dance with my wife and I) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8-mIouMbqM (Can't find a not live version) "I Did It My Way" by Frank Sinatra (Dance for my mom and I... I wouldn't tell her what song it was, she loved it though.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E2hYDIFDIU "Mony Mony" by Billy Idol ('cause it's funny seeing my grandmother sing "Hey everybody get laid, get fucked") "The Rodeo Song" by... oh... wait, you said family friendly, didn't you? "Sway" by Anita Kelsey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j_Zf4yFWmo
I assume that most everything else for the wedding is nearly ready, invitations sent out, etc. otherwise I'd suggest seeing the the couple are willing to put two lines for song requests on the invitation. (It went over really well for my wedding and made sure that there was some music for everyone.) My parents kept the c.d.'s so I don't have a quick way to check them for some of the other uncommon songs.
Ok to use cheesy records at a wedding, so mix them with credible ones
May I suggest; Help yourself - Tom Jones Unbelievable - EMF any michael Jackson bootleg (eg layo and bushwacka mix of billie jean) serious - Richard Hawley Hey ya! - outkast Can't touch this -Hammer Walk this way - Run DMC
and mix it up with more credible stuff for your own self-respect.
