I feel kind of lame making a post for this, but if anyone can give me some feedback, it's you fine folks.
My friends are having me "dj" their wedding reception. By "dj", I mean come up w/ music to put in a playlist and hit play on an iPod hooked up to a stereo system. Their plan is to have everyone in the bridal party pick one song, and I can go crazy w/ the rest.
Problem is, I'm having trouble coming up w/ suitable music. My only restriction is to keep it family-friendly, as there will be kids about.
So far, I have "Dance Commander" by Electric Six and (maybe) either "Diamonds and Gold" or "Hang Down Your Head" by Tom Waits. I'm really wanting to avoid the cliche stuff.
Anyone have suggestions?

Jane and I actually had fun including good songs that were kind of anti-wedding songs (Tainted Love, Poison Arrow, etc) but in the end, good music, and a mix of fast and slow gives everyone something to enjoy.

And if you haven't seen these, here's my Wedding DJ Bingo cards that I made for my B.P.M. graphic novel, which are a fun game to play when you're at a wedding with a crappy DJ and you have drinks! Sounds like you're well on your way to being the good kind of wedding music person!

WEDDING DJ BINGO GAME CARDS

Okay, I'll put up a few because they're ones that people don't tend to think of/hadn't heard of before.

I'm going to try to remember some songs from my wedding... and some commentary

"Your Party" by Ween (Near the end of the night) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0ISF95axZQ
"Soon Love Soon" by Vienna Teng (first dance with my wife and I) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8-mIouMbqM (Can't find a not live version)
"I Did It My Way" by Frank Sinatra (Dance for my mom and I... I wouldn't tell her what song it was, she loved it though.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E2hYDIFDIU
"Mony Mony" by Billy Idol ('cause it's funny seeing my grandmother sing "Hey everybody get laid, get fucked")
"The Rodeo Song" by... oh... wait, you said family friendly, didn't you?
"Sway" by Anita Kelsey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j_Zf4yFWmo

I assume that most everything else for the wedding is nearly ready, invitations sent out, etc. otherwise I'd suggest seeing the the couple are willing to put two lines for song requests on the invitation. (It went over really well for my wedding and made sure that there was some music for everyone.) My parents kept the c.d.'s so I don't have a quick way to check them for some of the other uncommon songs.

Hmmmm. Let's analyze these "drop" requests from the groom; most often, it's because they feel it's "too out there" for the crowd they interpret will be there. Update: Those drops were suggested by bride. Which is okay w/ me. Some of those I'd rather keep for my (WAAAY) future wedding reception. Especially the Peeping Tom song, Caipirinha. Beautiful song. Also, Prince and Al Green avoided the ax. That's all I could ask for!
I'm running the numbers on the songs I do have. I have about 71 minutes of music so far. There's a minimum of six songs left to add, from the bridesmaids and what not.
Is there a magic number I should aim for? More or less? I don't expect this to be the dancing-est group ever, but I'd like the at least encourage them to get on the floor.

I always plan for about 2 solid hours of music, splitting that up as a section of songs that they will be specificially listening for (Ooooh, she played "Too Drunk to Fuck", just like we requested!), and then a bunch of other good stuff that you'll play long after the wedding party has stopped paying attention or has left and you have to entertain all the drunk relatives still hanging out at the reception.

I always plan about a 50/50 split for this, figuring that after an hour, the bride and groom will be going around talking to Aunt Edna and Grandma Smith and won't be thinking about the dance floor too much.

Sorry to say this, but I had over three hours of music and it wasn't enough. Sure, most people were gone, but there was still enough sitting around and chatting that they noticed it was some of the same songs again... mind you, at that point it was so late that no one really cared.

And, unlike Paul's, a bunch of people were up and dancing until somewhere around 2 1/2 hours into it no matter what the song was... after that it become more song specific for people. (IE: Everyone got up once "Off to the Rodeo" came on. It was the last song on the set of discs.)

What day of the week is the wedding on? That makes a difference... a friend of mine got married on a Sunday and most people were done and gone after an hour. Mine was on a Friday and people were there until at least 1am.

Another thing to consider is putting a lot of relaxing jazz type music on so that if it does end up to be a bunch of people sitting around chatting you can put on some nice background noise. (IE: St. Germain.)

@Paul Sizer: My best man was mad when I told him the wedding was on a Friday. He figured it would be a pain in the arse due to everyone having to request the day off and what have you. I pointed out that his was on a Sunday a year earlier and everyone was so worried about working the next morning that no one was drinking too much and they were gone by 10.
That just made him mad at me for being right instead of for getting married on a Friday.

And yes, Tourist is the one I had in mind when I suggested St. Germain. Groom here. I signed up specifically to comment, hooray.

We've actually not been declining picks because we think they're too out there, but because we're just not fans of the music. The bride, especially, tends to be quite picky. We're being selfish bitches and going mostly for music we like, bwahaha. Hey, it's our wedding. Brittanica just has a much broader music taste than us and enjoys making playlists and stuff, so I thought she'd like to help put all of it together and such.

These are basically the rules I've been using:

1) Everyone in the wedding party gets to pick a song, which must be played. (This later was expanded to include ushers and our parents.)
2) We reserve the right to drop any song that we're just not crazy about.
3) We'll make suggestions that Brittanica can use or discard at her whim.

They haven't been set in stone exactly, but that's basically it.

Let me lay out some of our music tastes (and I'm always on the look out for new music, so I'd definitely appreciate any suggestions):

Groom:
Lately I've been really in to progressive metal/mathcore and post-hardcore stuff, but a lot of that actually IS too out there for a wedding, usually. I tend to like experimental rock and such as well, though. In the past, I've been a big fan of industrial and even synth pop but I've been moving away from that in recent years. The suggestions given so far all came from me. The bride's still gotta go through her music collection. Some bands I like: The Mars Volta, Dredg, The Fall of Troy, The Human Abstract, Coheed and Cambria, At the Drive-In, Blaqk Audio, The Faint, Ohgr, Skinny Puppy, The Cure, Tom Waits, Rise Against, The White Stripes

Bride:
She tends to like J-rock, mostly. I strongly suspect that if an American band made the exact same music, she wouldn't like it. But that's neither here nor there. She also likes pop-punk and radio rock. Bands she likes: The Gazette, Rentrer en Soi, Fall Out Boy, The Used, The White Stripes, Garbage, The Faint, Electric Six, Square-Enix RPG soundtracks (Especially Kingdom Hearts)

So there's really not much we agree on, I suppose, except for The White Stripes, The Faint, and Electric Six. I suppose there's things I'm not thinking of, though.

Maybe that deluge of info will help some more.

Anjl -- It's your wedding and you should have music playing that you like. Nothing wrong with that. If you read through this whole thing you'll see that I had a spot for song requests on my wedding invitations. We ended up to play most of the songs but there was one or two that I either just didn't like or didn't think was appropriate (IE: divorced aunt and uncle were going to be there and he requested a song which was, basically, "I miss you, I screw up, please take me back," and that just didn't seem right for the wedding.

After looking at yours and your wife-to-be's taste in music... I really have nothing to suggest. From those that I do know there is nothing that jumps out as wedding appropriate dance music. Something to remember is that yes, it is important that you enjoy the music that's at your wedding, but at the same time, you have to remember that you need to play music that most people will enjoy and dance to otherwise people won't dance. And when people aren't dancing at a wedding they don't stick around too long.

When is the wedding?

 It's a week from tomorrow.

I'm honestly not crazy about dance music anyway, hence why I've not been seeking them out too much. I honestly don't think many people will dance at all (though Brittanica is convinced otherwise) just because I know how our families are. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong, we'll see. I kinda think dancing (outside of honky tonk style line dancing or square dancing, and like, booty dancing) isn't terribly popular in the South. (We're just outside of Nashville, TN.)

Anjl -- I thought the same thing... and then my uncle that was born with a stick up his ass was leading the conga line out the doors and started trying to get random strangers to join in even though the entire group was too far away to hear the music anymore.

But hey, you don't want music that people can dance to at your wedding, that's yours and your soon to be wife's call.
And if that's the case, I think Brittanica should play Skinny Puppy's "Headset Hard" Just to make it clear to everyone that it's a no dancing wedding.

In case you can't tell, I'm with Brittanica, without even knowing anything about anyone you know, in thinking that people will dance at your wedding. It's a wedding... it's what people do. They don't booty shake, they don't slam dance, the don't square dance (unless you play the rodeo song)... Let her pick some good music for people to get up and party to and only take out those songs that you or your fiancee really don't like.

How many people are you having at your wedding? What's the general age? IE: Mine was mostly aunt's and uncle's as I have a freaking huge family so most people were between 40-60 years (60%), with some cousins/friends 20-35 (25%), and grandparents 65+ (15%). We played music that would appeal to the most people with a few songs thrown in for the younger people so that they knew we appreciated them being there. Would I listen to all the songs again? No, probably not. But there wasn't any played that I couldn't stand to listen to. Yes, it is your day, but you want people to enjoy your celebration rather than having them hear three songs and decide that there's nothing they're going to like and leaving because they don't want to sit around listening to shit noise all night.

But hey, this is just my opinion and in the end it's your wedding. I hope that you and your wife have a long, happy life together. Hopefully neither of you are too stressed on the big day and that you're both able to take it all in and enjoy yourselves. That's really the important part.
