Maybe this is what we need, in terms of general Western 'culture.' It seems that homogenisation is becoming more apparent and rewarded, from supermarket produce to television shows. Maybe 'proper' culture (a definition I'm happy with, anyway) can only hit the mainstream in a covert manner?
Great, isn't it? Besides the obvious benefit of repairing a beautiful machine and piece of culture, the idea of clandestine clock mechanics is almost too good not to write about.
I don't think that this sort of thing needs to be covert at all. In fact I feel it needs to be as open and public as possible. No one imagines that they could spend a few hours a week and become a blacksmith while living in a major city, but you can. There are tons of organizations for this sort of thing. They're just not very well known.
