Anticipation for new things to come, discovered this weekend:
New Yello album:
TOUCH YELLO

Say what you will, these guys fall in with Kraftwerk for me as innovators of electronic music, from the standpoint of learning how to bring the analogue into the mix. After they released "Stella" in 1985, they were cemented into music history. Truly embracing a Dada exuberance to the making of electronic music, the fact that this video has two 60 year old guys making cutting edge great sounds shows their commitment to the music. They hit and miss, to be sure, but seeing how they keep in the game makes me very happy.

also jammed the WIZWARS demo that i grabbed saturday. this guy rules! 8 bit electronics played through a modded gameboy.

Lots and lots of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, specifically From Her to Eternity, The Firstborn is Dead, and Tender Prey. Really, I've only recently discovered this stuff. I've had The Proposition OST for a while, but I never really "got" the Birthday Party or Bad Seeds stuff until I listened to a Grinderman song on Youtube, now I'm hooked.

I got myself some classical CDs to provide an unobtrusive soundtrack to my desk-bound days. Greatest hits packages from Vivaldi, Mozart and Beethoven to be precise. I'm totally ignorant in this field, so I went for the big hitters. Recommendations, esp more modern stuff, are very welcome.

Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. I prefer the orchestral arrangement of it, but the original solo piano suite is still excellent. Also Stravinsky's Firebird Suite and Rites of Spring, and Carnival of Animals by Camille Saint-Saens.

If you're after solo piano Erik Satie is always a winner.

Basement Jaxx - Scars (A few really good tracks, and some typical Jaxx filler inbetween.)
Muse - The Resistance (Not as good as the previous one... I'm missing the goosebumps factor. Still worth a listen.)
Mew - Frengers (Surprisingly good. Weirdest band I've seen at the top of bestseller lists since Radiohead did Kid A, though.)
Tommy Tokyo & Starving For My Gravy - Smear Your Smiles Back On (Kind of like a cross between Queen and Johnny Cash.)

I love Erik Satie. He was such a smartass. But speaking of fabulous classical pieces, are you familiar with Henryk Gorecki's Symphony #3 Symphony of Sorrowful Songs? It's probably my favorite piece of classical music. It's very haunting. The text for the first movement was taken from an inscription carved in a Gestapo prison cell in Poland.
