It seems to be that time again. I'll field questions for a while, provided they're not answered in the following FAQs or at the FREAKANGELS FAQ.

FAQ:

If details seem hazy, then that's often because they are and requests for clarity will get you nowhere:

IGNITION CITY #5: delayed by the switch in printers, I believe. Shipping next week.

ANNA MERCURY: same problem, I believe. Shipping today.

DESOLATION JONES: on hiatus, returning eventually, at least to conclude the second story in some (possibly truncated) fashion -- all original notes and scripts lost, as with FELL and NEWUNIVERSAL.

DOKTOR SLEEPLESS: Minor schedule bumpage continues.

FELL 10: on pause -- <del >still trying to reconstruct scripts from lost computer.</del> Gave up trying to reconstitute lost work, have commenced a new story for #10.

NEWUNIVERSAL -- same. There are pages in hand, but I want to have rebuilt a couple more scripts before we restart.

STEALTH TRIBES -- no news right now.

DOKTOR SLEEPLESS: the book is roughly planned as three or four "acts." I choose not to nail it down to a specific number of episodes right now, at least in public. Extenuating circumstances mean the next issue will be a little delayed.

ASTONISHING X-MEN: on a slightly extended schedule, I think, probably not QUITE monthly, maybe six-weekly.

PLANETARY: no idea about collections.

--------

PROSE WORK:

LISTENER: getting there. Again, this is a reconstitution issue, I lost almost 30,000 words in the computer/backup death. It's not looking good.

---------

OTHER MEDIA

RED: I'm told there's a script, I haven't seen it. Otherwise, what you read in the film press is usually news to me too!

CASTLEVANIA: No idea. I wrote it, they get to do what they want, whenever they want, my part is over.

OCEAN: No idea.

DEAD CHANNNEL: Dead at this time. Plans are afoot.

GRAVEL: there's no timeframe on this. I commence work on the script within the next couple of months, but this isn't like a comic or even a novel, so don't look for a release date or anything....

GI JOE: RESOLUTE - I've heard there's a DVD on the way, but I know nothing about it and have no involvement in it.

(Oct 2009)

When you have had the initial idea for a story, the first flash of inspiration, how do you develop it? This question might sound a bit vague, so as an example: my current, very inexperienced method would be to start writing without worrying about plotholes and polish, just to flesh out the concept and pick the good ideas out of the ocean of shit I've just spawned. Call it the first draft of the first draft. What's your method for developing an idea?

When you started to re-write 'Listener', did the new version come out better?

Well, there's a few stages to this.

1> the version I was pissing around with on LJ years ago.

2> so I was rewriting that. And it started slow, but as I re-envisioned the whole thing, it started to get good to me.

3> and then I lost the lot. And, frankly, trying to rebuild it has been impossible. The energy's gone from it, I can't find the tone it had before, it's like having to chew a bit of gum you found under your bed that had probably been stuck to the leg for three years. Hopeless.

Motion comics are indeed not actual comics... They're done by taking comics and, well, narrating them, adding in bits of animation and suchlike here and there. They're sort of a midpoint between the comic and an actual cartoon adaptation.

Invincible is being turned into a motion comic, and Watchmen was made into one, too. The Watchmen motion comic did make one horrendous decision by making ONE guy voice the entire cast. Including the women. The Watchmen one kinda turned me off to the whole motion comic idea, but I'm interested in hearing if a comic creator sees any use in them :)

Here's a Spider Woman motion comic for future reference. I found it to be surprisingly good, at least compared to the bits I've seen from the Watchmen one. I like the look of it a lot even. Not that I'd start watching them or anything, but they'd probably be a good way of getting people interested in new titles if used as marketing.

I'd also like to ask you what your motivations for doing these threads are? And say: Thank you, Warren.

Edit: Seems a linked YouTube vid turns into an embedded one...

I haven't bought the new Fuck Buttons LP yet. How does it compare to the previous one ?

I personally enjoy it, but I don't think it compares well. You have to come at it from the perspective that Fuck Buttons are, and always were, a pop band, and that second album is always difficult for a pop band -- not least because they want to be seen as more than a pop band and so strive to do more complex or challenging material. Which means, usually, longer tracks.

Imagine, if you like, a synthpop band who wanted to be "serious" and so took their cues from Vangelis. Or mid-period Kraftwerk. Now filter that through Fuck Buttons. That's what TAROT SPORT is, to me.

"I'm not smart. 128 or so."
Sorry, for embarassing you. It was just my gut reaction from the first reading.
I've always had a strange fascination with time travel stories, especially dealing with time paradoxes, and you provided a new twist in the concept that I've never heard of till now.
It's a challenge to write such a story, to try to juggle, a complex, and easily confusing concept, provide an original take on it, and still entertain and provide an emotional connection between the reader and the characters. Not easy. In fact, I'm having trouble thinking of other examples at the moment.

Anyway, back to the interrogation.
Have you read any excellent time travel stories that you can recommend?
Have you ever considered writing a story specifically dealing with time paradoxes? If you already had, what is it, so I can go buy it.

And it can be a very good thing, especially when the writers and the team really do work with each other. I'd definitely like to see more of that (some teams don't need this kind of input of course, but it could be an improvement for many games).

Lots of it? I suspect not. Within that set: lots of sentient life? I suspect not, as per Fermi and Rare Earth. The Rare Earth Hypothesis is way too restrictive and falls victim to weak thinking at too many points -- but I personally think that people are much too dismissive of radiation as a limiter on the expansion of life.

Not that we'll ever find out, because no-one gives a shit about human spaceflight or exotic propulsion.

 Got another one:

Mark Millar has on more than one occasion talked about how he feels there is an 'expiry date' on writing for comics. He (and I am working from memory here) said that he thinks a writer past the age of 45 loses its relevance/connection with the kids.

Of course that doesn't mean one has to stop working in comics. There's plenty of examples of over 45-ers who still create successful work in and out of the mainstream.

My question: Do you agree with the idea that you can only stay relevant for so long in a populist medium before you lose your touch and start to become too self-referential/start repeating yourself?

I've been wondering about Millar's statement, partly because I think its a bit far fetched — look at any other creative industry, film for example, and there's loads of over people over 45 creating entertainment that gets eaten up by the 14-25 demographic — but at the same time I can see what he means that there comes a point where you have to let go and do your own thing before you get swallowed up by the machine.

So do you see yourself pouring over old maps in 10-15 years time or will you have moved on/phased out of comics slightly?

EDITED TO ADD: I know thats one of those horribly vague questions, but the thing I'm getting at is, personally, I see myself design the things I do now and expand on that in the next 10-15 years (of course I'm younger as well), but in my field of creative industry its not unheard of designers in their 70s still cranking out work that gets appreciated by the masses. I might be digging a hole here.

My backups all got corrupted, and my backup device died. I'll fix that on Sunday, I thought, as I was under deadline pressure. Saturday evening, my main machine died in flames. Sent it off for data recovery. The guy running the data recovery shop took it in and then went off to Europe for an operation. And died on the operating table. Came back to the shop to get my machine, because no-one was answering the phone, to find it boarded up, the (mostly off-the-books, apparently) employees scattered to the four winds, and the shop stripped down to the plaster. Not a computer left in there -- not even mine.

(and no-one could do anything with the fucked backup discs, either.)

I keep thinking I ought to ask something but can't come up with a single question, so I'll just say that, if it's got the name Warren Ellis on the writing credit, I'll at the bare minimum take a look and 90% likely buy it.

I didn't realize the Dead Space situation sucked that badly. You'd think, when they hired a writer, they'd be smart enough to listen. There's a reason I don't consider story in video games important is that it generally isn't. There are exceptions, of course. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus spring to mind instantly, but in general a game's personality being good (Katamari Damacy, for example) is the best you can hope for. It's be nice if they had at least a little respect for the craft, though.

"I knew an actress so stupid, when she tried to get in a movie she fucked the writer!" *laugh track*

My first thought for a question was whether or not you've ever thought about writing an autobiography (and I do mean mostly non-fictional) but then I started wondering if you would find that too personal. Maybe later in life. There is still plenty left to go, after all, one can only hope.

Do you find that keeping a distance between home life and public [online] life necessary for sanity? Personally I've found myself moving in the opposite direction towards a merging of all my little "lives" so your opinion as someone who has more experience than I interests me. Is it a necessary evil given your popularity, or a genuine choice? Though I don't mind if you consider this whole question too personal and philosophical for Whitechapel and take a pass... Maybe we need an Ask Uncle Warren Life Advice / Existential Philosophy thread.

More straightforwardly, thanks for introducing me to Fuck Buttons, I don't know if they're entirely something I would fall in love with but there is certainly a niche waiting for them in my playlists. I know this might be heresy, but they sound like a toned down Linkin Park with the ambient synth and background screaming.

Have you ever been asked to be a talking head on TV culture programmes a lá Alan Moore on Comics Britannia or the late review at all?

And if you were to be asked, what would your answer be?

I did a spot for Channel 4 news once, talking about some tv show, I forget which... in general, I avoid that kind of thing. There's an awful lot of talking-monkey-syndrome, that affects even Alan's appearances -- "look, he writes comics AND he's intelligent. We better find some other way to make him look fucking stupid." And usually, they do. No-one's giving Jeanette Winterson a copy of KICK-ASS to flick through out of altruism. And the level of intellectual rigour in relation to comics on The Late Review is usually worse than that -- Tom Paulin's considered opinion on the work of Chris Ware were "oh, aren't the colours dreary?"
