they have their entire new album up on their myspace page for streaming. and i have to say it's shockingly different from their other stuff. oddly enough it's much more metal than anything they've ever done but also less brutal, probably because it seems less noisy than the last 3 albums. the southern sludge influence seems to be a lot stronger with them too.

ballou also has some solos, which again is very weird for converge, given yes he does shred on all the albums but in a different atypical way, and it's usually part of riffs. and here it's like straight up, metal solos.

i'm not feeling the first few songs, dark horse i especially dislike, but dead beat, and worms will feed sound really good to me right now. need to listen to more of it, anyway

Actually a couple of the solos on the record come from guest artists. "Effigy" has Stephen Brodsky from Cave In doing lead guitar duty and "Wishing Well" has Uffe Cederland of Disfear and Entombed busting out that solo at the end.

    Yep, I'm a fan.
First listen: I liked it. All the nuances have yet to sink in. Nothing of theirs has been better than Jane Doe IMHO.
My friend described it as being like "having god stomp on your throat."

Never cared for them, but joe.distort posted a link to the myspace page in a weekly listening thread a few weeks back, and this time, I really liked what I heard.

Which is odd because I normally don't like metal at all.

    Cheers for the link.
    The album is fucking nice.
The consensus amongst myself and friends is that it is a slower, slightly more tech leap forward from No Heroes.
Can't wait to see it live.

They opened for Dethklok/Mastodon and i didn't really care for them to be honest. It sounded like he was screaming "Fall" or "Fuck" over and over again for 30 minutes.

It's true the vocals/lyrics hold very little interest for me...Jacob is a very intense stage presence but I'm mostly interested in the guitar and drums, the only two elements I think are essential for metal...

i posted a link to download the whole leaked album in the metal thread...the vinyl ships next week i think. i like it MUCH more than NO HEROES, but you are correct, nothing will ever touch JANE DOE. i was just listening to the c/d side of that double album last night. so good.

(and DARK HORSE, CUTTER and CRUEL BLOOM are my favorites on this new album.)

i dont consider myself a metal fan, and im surprised i like some of this album because it is VERY metal. thats part of why i liked JANE DOE so much, it is the perfect meeting point of fast hardcore and metallic leanings.

no heroes is much more to my taste, and jane doe is one of my favorite albums ever. the new one seems much more straightforward and metal than any of their other stuff, not bad though, maybe my mind will change but so far it kind of feels like the weakest thing they've put out.

i also thought that yeah there's more of some standard metal type stuff going on with the guitar and drums, but i felt like this album was less technical than their previous work, especially jane doe, ballou does some stuff on that album that's absolutely mystifying.

i just noticed be honest, if youve managed to somehow not hear CONVERGE in the past oh, 15 years or so that theyve been playing, you probably arent really the target for them at all

Well, i had heard of Converge- I used to work at a record shop here in Springfield and happened to take "Jane Doe" home after someone traded it in. I just was not impressed with their Live show. The crowd wasn't very receptive to them, there wasn't a lot of energy and the singer was actually talking shit on the people up front because they kept telling him to get off the stage. The Sound was garbled- whoever was running levels that night had everything fucked up. When he was just singing/talking you couldn't hear it at all, and it was simply punctuated by his screams. The guitar was decent but kept sounding like it was hitting a limiter. When he switched over to his more treble-heavy sound for the picking on various songs it sounded terrible. The rhythm section was good, great drummer, great bass player, good sound. I actually wonder if they were having problems with the PA, because when Mastodon came out Brent Hinds (guitars, vocals) kept feeding back and screamed at a roadie to turn something off.

I should note that i actually enjoy one of the new songs-Dark Horse- but haven't had a chance to listen to the album in it's entirety.
