So much to appreciate. Our first look at Mark, who after all the build-up seems remarkably normal (well, normal for a FreakAngel anyway). I particularly like the variety of clothing and style. Connor as a goth, Luke in his suit and tie and Karl as a punk, which I personally never saw coming. KK foreshadowing her bike and the genesis of the crash - looks like it was Mark's fault all along.

Given that "ill-fitting" means at most "a few inches out of place", I'd like the congratulate the artist (named Paul I know but I'm being formal, as in "my compliments to the chef") on drawing such precise detail.

I also thought that the ballistics of the helicopters on page 1 panel 1 was odd: in real life I'd expect them all to be more nearly vertical, unless they were suddenly accelerating or decelerating, which they wouldn't be doing IMO so low and so close to each other. So, it's cartoonish. But to make the introductory panel of the volume slightly but recognisably cartoonish, like 20% cartoonish as opposed to 100% 'realistic' as in subsequent panels, is neat, almost conventional: it sort of tells the reader, "Settle in, suspend disbelief, here's a story of ...", and makes the subsequent panels all the more highly realistic by contrast.

The 'copters too remind me of SF pictures of a metropolis: if this were daylight and the camera aimed at street-level, I'd expect to see normal, everyday, high-population-density, pre-crash, able-to-sustain-technology life. It's ambiguous on whether we're looking at a police state.

What's Connor wearing? I can't read it, his choker for example. I have only recently discovered this fantastic story (a roundabout thank you to Joe Hill, for whom Mssr Ellis wrote the introduction for his latest graphic novel), and have rushed through the previous 72 episodes, so maybe I missed it, but has anyone mentioned why they were being hunted?

For that matter, do we know the apocalypse they caused was due to their retaliation against said government agents? They haven't (again, to the best of my recollection) ever expressed any kind of "You know it's kinda their fault too for putting us in a corner" sentiments.

While still very concerned for Kait, this is a great place for the backstory, since we are about to meet Mark in the "present". I have always loved glimpses of what made the characters who they are today (in any work of fiction).

As for Mark not looking as sinister as people expected, none of them look as we know them yet. All of them are softer in every way. He hasn't gone there yet, wait for it.

@Sai and Wax - That looks like the glimpse of Arkady we saw before (not Sirkka), same outfit. She also had long purple hair back then.

@headlesssamurai - From what we've gathered, the government found out about their strange abilities and whatnot, then tried to hunt them down. (the premise is somewhat based on the Midwich Cuckoos (the book that was also inspiration for Village of the Damned) as Warren mentioned in a skip-week or intermission somewhere. I noticed a few things in this episode:
1: Anyone else think it's interesting that Mark has been introduced for the first time in a flashback? It just seems like this sort of thing would happen near or directly after he's introduced in the main plot. I'm wondering if he's the mystery culprit that's a Jack the Ripper fan. It seems like he'd be able to get his hands on the types of weapons in the case and also would know Kaitlyn's name.

2: This episode is only the third time that Connor's journal has really been highlighted. Makes me wonder if that's to slip its importance under the radar (especially since the FreakAngels are keeping their abilities secret).

(Sorry if I'm writing too much. I'm still pretty excited after my first read-through of the story)

3: If Karl and Kirk first suggested the show of strength, but Mark led them to the event that caused the Crash, and they all agreed to do it with unintended repercussions, is Mark really the one mainly at fault for the Crash? They all seem pretty accepting of their part in blowing up the world, but Mark's fall was his alone. Interestingly, though, it seems his "we're doing this wrong" sentiment is showing up in the "present" through Arkady and Luke now... if Mark and Kait both survive the apartment, I can see a more interesting dialogue taking place along those lines. I'm going to the MCM Expo; I've come all the way from Colchester to be in London specifically for the weekend. I'll be there all of Sunday, and am feeling a little ambivalent about meeting Morgana (Merlin, BBC1) in the flesh. Firstly, everyone knows never to meet those who you admire from afar as they tend to either disappoint with dullness or be arrogant pricks, and secondly because I don't know if she can possibly be that attractive in real life. I mean - what if it's all CGI and clever camera angles? Alas, I'll bite the bullet. I'm even tempted to ask a question such as 'Hello, I was wondering, when you wake up in Merlin all breathless and frightened from one of your nightmares, did you film that scene just once, or do you bother to film it for every single episode?', but I doubt that would go down particularly well.

I agree with whomever said they looked softer, and younger too.

Karl I believe in one panel has his signature sunglasses on, so that's why I could differentiate between Kurt and Karl but it took me a moment hehe. I wonder if after they kill Mark if the group split, because I assume that's after they caused the catastrophe. I'm wondering what the ordinary folks in the area were told about the helicopters and troops and all. And why exactly the government was so emphatic about capturing/killing the Freakangels.

And sometimes I wonder if Mark isn't as much of a monster as we think he is. We've only got the FAs perspective to go by, after all. Is he really a guy who, once he had the opportunity, decided to use his powers to run his world his way? Or is there more to the story than that? I'm thinking there's more to it, which doesn't mean Mark's not a bad guy, but is likely to mean that he's a much more complex baddie than descriptions have made him out to be.

And he's hot, too. Thank you for the flash back. I really love the sidelong glimpses of what made the Angels and who they came to be. Good, good stuff.

There are lines around the characters, especially on page 4. It's very trippy and I wonder if that's on purpose. KK and Mark look like they have echoes of themselves tracing them.

Long exhausting day for me with potentially good news arriving. Won't know for a few days and in the meantime have to keep begging the universe for a mineral. Can't pay a one of my bills at this point.

I'm a considerable Maynard James Keenan fan, love all the Tool & A Perfect Cicle stuff but the only Puscifer stuff I have is from a soundtrack - the super erotic "Rev 22:20." For whatever reason it didn't occur to me to look for more Puscifer stuff until now and that's how I stumbled on "Indigo Children" The video is not official but instantly made me think of Arkady and possibly what one of her psychonaut adventures might look like. Then I went and looked up the lyrics and the meaning behind the phrase indigo children.

I don't see how this isn't the story about a GROUP of people, in some ways very much like a family, but never focusing on any single character in particular so much as the general assembly of that group.

Sure, KK is the first one we see ( immediately followed by Conner, who's been one of the 'quietest' of charcters so far ), but that hardly makes all this ABOUT her. This week surpassed my usually high expectations.

Mark...finally. I got this leader, condescending type of vibe from him. Mostly from the way, Karl worded his idea, like he was expecting Mark to shoot it down like he was some poor misguided fool. The smile he gave Karl was patronizing. He seemed very calm, cool, and collected, like he was in control and on top of the situation (I got that from his body language and the track suit). He may not be the leader, but he seems assertive. I can see him raising a mini mind army, right under people's noses, he looks trustworthy (which is one of those things that makes me suspicious of such types).

I could be reading too much into that...oh well.

I found this all to be enlightening. I realize now that I love Connor because he reminds me of my brother and I always seem to have a soft spot for those skinny, endearing, gothy types..their like little black puppies. Also, if anything, I love Luke even more (the little snotty SOB), he looked like a boarding school kid in that suit (the kind that doesn't really give a shit about status quo)...it was sexy. I think Luke's right, Connor must have some other purpose besides recording everything, but it's a noble undertaking. Hopefully no one ever finds the book on what really happened...sure people will want to read that, but it would likely push them back into a defensive position against the world (which really can't take it).

Karl was such a cutie back then. It was nice to see him before he became the tin-foil guy. His power therefore must be being extremely punchable, whilst admittedly having a hand in some of the finest pop records in the last 15 years.
